Premier League's warped economics make £65m fee for Semenyo a snip | Jonathan Wilson

Manchester City's planned £65m move for Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo may seem reasonable to some, but it raises eyebrows given its proximity to other high-profile signings. The transfer fee is staggering when compared to its contemporaries in other European leagues. In the Bundesliga alone, a player of similar stature typically commands a fee in the range of £40-50m.

What's striking about this deal, however, isn't just the fee itself but how little attention it's generated so far. It appears as though Semenyo, at 25 with four and a half years remaining on his contract, is seen as more than just an average player worth a hefty price tag. He boasts impressive attributes: speed, skill, intelligence, and a strong work ethic – the classic combination that clubs like Manchester City strive to acquire.

In contrast, other high-profile signings in the same transfer window have struggled to make an impact. The 'big No 9' trend that dominated the summer has largely fizzled out, with only a handful of players meeting expectations. Nick Woltemade's surprise success at Newcastle United stands as a rare exception, while others like Hugo Ekitiké and Liam Delap continue to navigate their roles.

One player who seems to have defied expectations is Erling Haaland, whose incredible form has revitalized the notion that an old-school striker might still hold value in the modern game. However, the striking similarity between Haaland's success and Semenyo's transfer fee remains unclear. Is £65m a fair reflection of Semenyo's abilities?

While Pep Guardiola undoubtedly possesses a keen strategic mind, even City can't escape the vagaries of the market. The £65m price tag feels largely detached from any objective reality, leaving many to wonder if it truly represents value.

ugh i dont get why ppl are so hyped about semenyo already he's got 4 and a half yrs left on his contract like what makes him suddenly worth 65 million lol the player stats sound ok i guess but £40-50m is still more realistic for someone of his caliber especially when u compare it to other european leagues idk wot pep guardiola is thinking but 65m just seems like a wild card at this point

I'm not sure about this one... £65m for Semenyo seems like way too much to me 🤯. I mean, I get that he's got some sick skills and all, but you gotta think about what similar players are getting in other leagues. It's just crazy how high the prices are getting these days 💸. Don't even get me started on how little attention it's gotten... I'd have expected a lot more buzz about this deal 🤔. Maybe City just feels like he's gonna make all the difference or something? But still, that price tag is whack 🚫. Pep might know his stuff, but even him can't make £65m seem reasonable 😂.

.. 65 million quid for this guy Semenyo? 🤯 I mean, I know he's got skills and all, but come on! In my day, we'd be lucky to get a player worth that much in the Premier League, let alone a young bloke like him. And don't even get me started on how little attention this deal is getting – it's like nobody's talking about it! 😒 I mean, I'm not saying he's not worth it or anything, but 65 million just seems...out of whack, ya know? 🤑

I just got my new phone case with a sick design 📱💥 and I'm so hyped! Anyway, back to football... £65m for Antoine Semenyo seems crazy to me 💸😂, like what even is that? In comparison to other leagues, that's like buying a house or something 🏠👀. And yeah, I don't get why he's getting so much attention, the other signings seem like they're struggling to make an impact 🤔💪... unless it's Nick Woltemade and his Newcastle United magic 😎👍. But seriously, £65m for Semenyo? Is that really fair? Pep Guardiola is a genius and all, but even he can't get the market right sometimes 🤷‍♂️😂

I think its crazy how much money Manchester City is willing to splurge on Semenyo... 🤯 £65m seems way out of pocket! I mean, what's the logic behind that fee? Is Pep just trying to prove a point or something? 😂 And you're right, other big signings this window have been a bit of a letdown. It's like City is taking huge risks on these players. I'm not saying Semenyo isn't talented, but £65m is just ridiculous! 💸

I don't get why they're spending so much cash on Semenyo 🤔... like, what's next? A £100m fee for someone who's still playing at youth level? 😂 It seems a bit excessive considering other leagues are paying less for similar players 💸. Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but 65 mil just feels too much for me 🙅‍♂️

I'm intrigued by this transfer deal, and I think it's telling that Semenyo is being viewed as a significant target despite having four and a half years left on his contract 🤔. It's almost as if Manchester City see him as a key component in their squad, but the £65m fee is jarring considering other top-tier strikers are commanding significantly lower sums 💸.

I'm curious to know how much of this perceived value comes from Semenyo's impressive attributes – speed, skill, intelligence, and work ethic. Is he truly worth this price tag, or is it more about City wanting to make a statement in the market? The fact that other high-profile signings have struggled to make an impact only adds to the mystique 🤷‍♂️.

While I think Semenyo's attributes are certainly noteworthy, I'm not convinced that £65m reflects his actual value. Even Pep Guardiola's strategic mind can't escape the vagaries of the market, and City would do well to make sure they're getting a fair deal 💡.

I dont get why ppl are so down on this Semenyo transfer lol 🤷‍♂️ he seems like a solid player with all the right skills & attributes... the £65m price tag is steep tho 🤑 its not like im against big spendin or anythin, but like, is it fair? 🤔
