Beloved pop-up Amelia Street Pizza Co. plans Hazel Park shop - Detroit Metro Times

Popular Pizza Pop-up to Open Brick-and-Mortar in Hazel Park

Detroit's beloved pizza pop-up, Amelia Street Pizza Co., is set to expand into a permanent location in Hazel Park. The new shop, backed by acclaimed chef James Rigato as an investor and mentor, aims for a spring opening.

Founded by Matt Arb, the pop-up was initially launched from his home kitchen after seven years working as a refinancing banker at Rocket Mortgage. The business took off on social media, catching the attention of Rigato and leading to a residency at Detroit's Dragonfly in 2025.

The menu is simple, featuring classic options like cheese, pepperoni, and a rotating special, alongside cheese bread, cookies, and soft drinks. Arb has expressed his gratitude towards Rigato for taking an interest in his business without trying to alter its concept or style.

"We've wanted to open a pizza spot for a long time," Rigato said. "This is Matt's business and Matt's pizza. My mentorship is on the business and behind-the-scenes side, helping a talented guy build something from the ground up."

Located in a 1,000-square-foot storefront attached to a party store less than a mile away from Mabel Gray, another high-end restaurant owned by Rigato, the shop will maintain its low-frills atmosphere. With Rigato's backing, Arb is confident that his pizza will continue to stand out while still feeling like a neighborhood spot.

omg u guys!!! 🤩 i cant even believe this!! so matt arb, the pizza pop-up guy, is getting his own brick-and-mortar in hazel park!! 💥 its literally been 7 yrs since he was working as a banker and then started this pizza thing from his home kitchen. and now james rigato (who's like, super famous chef) is investing in it and being all cool about not changing the menu 🤗 i mean, who needs fancy stuff when u have cheese & pepperoni rite?!? btw, its gonna be located near mabel gray, which sounds like an awesome spot 📚

omg i'm so down for this but like what's the point of having a celebrity chef involved? is it just for extra cred or something? anyway, matt arb's pizzas are already fire from what i've tried at the pop-up, and if james rigato can help him scale it up without messing with his vibe, that'd be awesome. still curious how they'll make it work being attached to a party store tho 🤔

🤔 i think this is gonna be so cool! a new brick and mortar in hazel park means more ppl can try that famous amelia street pizza 🍕 i mean, it's no surprise it took off on social media, the pics are always mouthwatering 😋 i'm curious to see how they'll make it work with all the party store stuff next door tho 🛍️ hope they keep it chill and don't lose that homey vibe 👌

omg i'm so hyped for this 🤩! finally a pizzeria in hazel park that's not just a fancy chain - matt arb's amelia street pizza co sounds like it's gonna bring some real community vibe to the area, you know? i love how james rigato is being super supportive and not trying to change the concept of the place. it's all about lettin' matt do his thing and then offerin' his expertise behind the scenes 🤝. plus, having it attached to mabel gray (i'm a fan of that spot too!) is like, the icing on the cake 💛

omg u guys!! i cant even believe this news!!! 🍕👏 amelia street pizza co is literally one of my fave spots in detroit! idk what james rigato saw in matt arb's home kitchen pizza pics, but im so down for a brick and mortar spot in hazel park now. the menu sounds so on point with just classic options & some fun specials 🤩 & can we talk about how cool it is that rigato's not trying to change matt's vibe? like, i get it, mentorship matters, but you gotta respect the original concept 💯. and the location is everything - less than a mile from mabel gray? perfect! 👍
