5 years later, a stubborn fight over the basic facts of the Jan. 6 riot

Five years into the U.S. Capitol attack, a deep-seated dispute persists over the basic facts of the violent insurrection on January 6, 2021.

Millions of dollars in damages have been repaired and clean-up is complete. Physical injuries have largely healed, and President Trump's pardons have freed more than 1,500 defendants from criminal liability. But a poisonous sentiment lingers among some who claim the Biden administration has weaponized the Department of Justice to prosecute those involved.

The president himself has repeatedly expressed similar views, claiming that many of the defendants were innocent or only committed "minor" infractions. He even suggested that murderers don't go to jail in this country. These statements have been debunked by facts and evidence from the investigations and trials of the defendants.

In reality, hundreds of Capitol riot defendants have served prison terms for crimes ranging from violent assaults on police officers to assaulting Congressmen. The exact number of those who received pardons is not clear but it's known that some were violent offenders with no prior convictions.

Despite overwhelming evidence and public testimony, President Trump has continued to reframe the narrative around January 6, claiming a "staged" event was orchestrated by the FBI. This claim ignores the extensive investigations and the unanimous verdicts obtained by prosecutors in all of the cases that went to trial.

A group of police officers who were injured during the attack on January 6 have spoken out against these claims, saying they are frustrated by the ongoing attempts to rewrite history. One officer, Dan Hodges, expressed his disillusionment with President Trump's redefinition of events.

"I thought: This has to be the most videotaped crime in American history. It's just so much evidence," he said in an interview. "But that's exactly what's happening." The attack was everything it appeared to be on television, Hodges emphasized.

House Democrats have announced a public meeting with witness testimony to counter these claims and defend the facts of the January 6 siege. Several police officers who were injured during the attack will testify at this event, aiming to set the record straight about the violence that occurred on January 6.

This ongoing battle over facts is not only a matter of history but also an insult to law enforcement and undermines democracy, according to some lawmakers. They believe it's essential to confront these false narratives head-on and promote truthfulness in public discourse.

As the nation looks back on this critical moment in American history, it's crucial that we preserve accurate information about what happened on January 6 and continue to uphold democratic values.

๐Ÿšจ still can't believe ppl think january 6 wasnt a legit insurrection ๐Ÿคฏ millions of dollars in damages repaired but some ppl wanna rewrite history anyway? ๐Ÿค‘ like, dont even get me started on pres trump's pardons ๐Ÿ™„ 1500+ people went free for crimes ranging from violent assaults to assaulting congressmen ๐Ÿ˜ฒ what happened to holding ppl accountable? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and yeah, police officers are TOTALLY frustrated with trumps narrative redefining events ๐Ÿšซ i mean come on, Dan Hodges is right ๐Ÿ™Œ this wasnt a staged event, it was a violent insurrection ๐Ÿšจ and we gotta keep telling the truth about it ๐Ÿ’ฏ

The whole thing is just getting out of hand ๐Ÿคฏ. Trump's claims are like, totally debunked, but he keeps running with them anyway. I mean, the dude says there's a "staged" event and that murderers don't go to jail? Like, what even is that? ๐Ÿ™„ It's not like anyone's trying to hide anything. The evidence is all there, folks. And the fact that some of these rioters are getting pardons despite being violent offenders... it's just sad ๐Ÿค•.

I've been following this whole thing since it happened, and it's crazy how much misinformation has spread. I mean, I'm not saying everyone who supports Trump doesn't know what they're talking about, but the dude's got a serious problem with facts ๐Ÿ“š. And now the police officers are speaking out against him? It's like, come on, man! ๐Ÿ™„ We need to focus on truth and democracy here.

And can we please just get some real truth out of this? Like, how many people were actually injured during that attack? How many people died? What was the extent of the damage? Can we just have a straight-up conversation about what happened instead of all this spin ๐Ÿ”„. I'm so done with the politics and the drama ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿ™„ I'm so done with all these conspiracy theories surrounding the Capitol attack ๐Ÿคฏ. It's not cool that some people are still trying to spin this as a non-event just 'cause their buddy in charge (Trump) says so ๐Ÿ˜’. Newsflash: if you don't like the outcome, take responsibility for it, don't try to rewrite history ๐Ÿ“.

I mean, come on, folks! We've got facts and evidence, and not all of these Capitol riot defendants were innocent ๐Ÿšซ. Some were actually violent offenders who got lucky with pardons ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And the police officers who testified about what they went through? They're not just saying it for drama, trust me ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

It's time to stop spreading misinformation and start promoting truthfulness in public discourse ๐Ÿ’ฌ. We can't let democracy go down the drain because some people can't handle the truth ๐Ÿคฏ. Let's focus on preserving accurate info about January 6 and move forward as a nation ๐Ÿ’ช.

I think its really sad that five years after the fact we're still getting worked up over this... I mean, i get it, its a big deal and alot of people were hurt, but come on, millions of dollars has been spent on repairs and most ppl have healed from their physical injuries. meanwhile, there's still so much distrust & misinformation out there ๐Ÿคฏ. lets focus on moving forward rather than constantly rehashing the same old arguments.

๐Ÿคฏ Did you see those stats from the FBI? ๐Ÿ“Š They're saying like 70% of the people involved in the Capitol riot had prior convictions or were already wanted for other crimes ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ผ And btw, have you seen that chart showing how much damage was done to the Capitol building? ๐Ÿ’ธ $15 million? That's crazy! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ And what about those 1,500 pardons from Trump? Like 90% of them had violent charges ๐Ÿ˜ณ You can't just pardon your way out of this, fam ๐Ÿšซ Meanwhile, we got police officers like Dan Hodges coming forward and saying they're fed up with these claims ๐Ÿค He's literally saying that the evidence is so clear it's like a "videotaped crime" in American history ๐Ÿ“น Can you believe what Trump's been saying? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ Like, murderers don't go to jail? ๐Ÿšซ That's not how our system works, bruh ๐Ÿ’”

This whole thing just got me thinking about how fragile truth can be. Like, we all know what really went down on Jan 6th, but Trump's been trying to turn the narrative into this wild conspiracy theory ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like, I get it, he's upset, but come on, dude, if you're gonna claim that murders don't go to jail, at least have the decency to be honest about what happened.

It's not just about January 6th tho, it's about how this kind of misinformation can spread and erode our trust in institutions. Like, police officers are speaking out against Trump's claims, and they're right to be frustrated. We need to have a public discourse that values truth over politics ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. And yeah, it's an insult to law enforcement and democracy when we let false narratives win.

But at the same time, I'm worried about how this whole thing is gonna get resolved. Like, are we just gonna keep going down this rabbit hole of conspiracy theories? Or can we find a way to have a constructive conversation about what really happened? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” I'm still not buying into all this January 6 drama. Like, come on guys, just accept that some of these rioters were violent and deserving of punishment ๐Ÿšซ. It's not like the FBI orchestrated an event from thin air ๐Ÿ™„. And what's with Trump's pardons? Is he trying to whitewash history or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I mean, I get that it's all still pretty fresh in people's minds, but do we really need a public meeting to remind everyone what happened on January 6? Can't we just move forward and focus on the future? ๐Ÿ˜’ And btw, if there's one thing I know is true, it's that law enforcement officers are not going to sugarcoat the truth ๐Ÿค. They'll be there to set the record straight and promote democratic values. So let's keep it real, folks! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿค” I think its super frustrating that 5 yrs after Jan 6th attack, there are still people denying what actually happened. Its like they wanna rewrite history & pretend the damage wasnt real or that nobody got hurt. ๐Ÿšง๐Ÿ’ฅ Millions of dollars were spent to fix the capitol building & clean up the mess. Innocent ppl did go to jail for their actions. ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ President Trump's pardon spree is just delaying justice. Its not about who's innocent or guilty, its about what happened on that day. The truth is we cant move forward till we get it right. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿค” I mean, come on... Five years in and people are still whining about the whole Jan 6 thing? Like, millions of dollars in damages were fixed, the cleanup is done, and a bunch of folks got locked up for their crimes... but nope, some folks just can't let go. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It's like they're trying to rewrite history or something. And meanwhile, President Trump is out here saying that murderers don't go to jail? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ That's just wild. I'm all for setting the record straight and promoting truthfulness, but come on, guys... get a grip! ๐Ÿ™„

And you know what really gets my goat? When people claim that Jan 6 was "staged" or something like that. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Like, have you seen the evidence from all those investigations and trials? It's not exactly hard to believe what happened, folks! ๐Ÿ“š And then there are all these police officers who were injured during the attack speaking out against Trump's claims... it's just so frustrating. ๐Ÿ˜ก

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we need to move on from this stuff and focus on the bigger picture. We can't let a bunch of conspiracy theories get in the way of preserving accurate information about our history. ๐Ÿค So, let's all just try to be adults and get on with it, okay? ๐Ÿ‘

it's insane how some ppl still think president trump's claims are true ๐Ÿคฏ i mean millions of dollars in damages repaired, hundreds of defendants served prison terms... it's not even a matter of debate anymore. the fact that he keeps reiterating these false narratives is just plain concerning ๐Ÿ˜” and to make matters worse, some police officers who were injured during the attack are speaking out against it ๐Ÿšจ like officer dan hodges, saying "this has to be the most videotaped crime in american history"... it's just so much evidence ๐Ÿ“น. we need to move forward with the truth, not try to rewrite history ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I'm so fed up with this whole situation ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, come on guys! We're five years post-attack and still getting disputed facts? It's like, get a grip! ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ The damage is done, people are injured, and we need to move forward. But noooo, some folks can't even accept reality ๐Ÿ˜‚. And President Trump just keeps pouring fuel on the fire with his conspiracy theories ๐Ÿš’. I'm all for truthfulness in public discourse, but this is just ridiculous ๐Ÿคฏ. We have to stop playing politics with our national narrative and start honoring the victims and their families ๐Ÿ’”. Can we please just agree on what happened? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I mean come on... ๐Ÿ™„ President Trump's still peddling conspiracy theories about a "staged" event? Like, have you seen the footage from the Capitol building on Jan 6? It's not exactly hard to believe what happened, especially when you consider all the evidence and eyewitness testimony. But no, he'd rather spin this whole thing into some wild narrative that ignores the law enforcement officers who were injured or even killed during the attack ๐Ÿš‘. And now, his pardons are setting a terrible precedent for others who committed violent crimes on Jan 6... it's just not right. I'm glad House Democrats are pushing back and trying to set the record straight ๐Ÿ‘Š

๐Ÿค” This whole thing is so messed up... like, millions of dollars spent fixing the Capitol building and stuff, but nobody wants to admit that some of those rioters were actually pretty violent ๐Ÿšจ. And then President Trump comes along and says it was all staged by the FBI? ๐Ÿ™„ Like, come on man! The cops who got hurt are speaking out and they're so frustrated that people are still trying to rewrite history. It's not just about politics, it's about respecting what really happened. We need to focus on telling the truth and moving forward, not trying to gaslight everyone into thinking this was all some kind of hoax ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that some people still deny what actually happened on Jan 6 is crazy! Interesting that the police officers who were injured during the attack are now speaking out against President Trump's claims, it's like they're trying to stop him from rewriting history ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฅ
