After tumultuous year for William Way, the LGBTQ+ center's new director looks to focus on community outreach

New Director at William Way LGBT Community Center Seeks to Focus on Outreach Amid Uncertainty.

Darius McLean, the new executive director of Philadelphia's iconic William Way LGBT Community Center, has brought a wealth of experience in LGBTQ+ advocacy and leadership to his role. The 29-year-old leader was first introduced to the organization during a school field trip in 2006, and it left an indelible mark on him.

In July 2025, McLean officially replaced longtime director Chris Bartlett and has been working tirelessly to address the center's tumultuous year. In the summer, the organization announced plans to sell its space in the Gayborhood and close the doors of this historic institution by December. However, due to public outcry and fundraising efforts, multiple funding sources stepped forward to cover the costs of renovating the 175-year-old building.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the renovation timeline – which McLean intends to update soon – he remains committed to prioritizing community outreach during his tenure. By June, he plans to launch a needs assessment survey to gauge how LGBTQ+ individuals are being served across the city and host a town hall event. This initiative aims to ensure that the center is serving its most vulnerable populations effectively.

As the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, McLean is keenly aware of the importance of championing inclusion and empowering marginalized voices. In his previous role as director and chief operating officer at the Arcila-Adams Trans Resource Center at William Way, he expanded financial assistance for underprivileged queer residents and advocated for pay transparency.

"My hope is that we continue to facilitate a space of growth, both internally and externally with our community," McLean said, emphasizing the need to prioritize equity and inclusion in all aspects of the center's work. "I want to make sure that we're empowering folks, particularly those who have been historically silenced or marginalized."

πŸ€” I think it's awesome that Darius McLean is focusing on community outreach at William Way LGBT Community Center 🌈. He sounds like he really gets what the community needs and wants. 50 years old is a big deal, but let's be real, who doesn't love a good anniversary party πŸŽ‰? I'm kinda worried about the renovation timeline tho, hoping it gets done ASAP ⏱️. McLean seems super passionate about making sure everyone is served effectively πŸ‘. And honestly, who can blame him for wanting to empower marginalized voices? It's time we give those guys more love ❀️. Can't wait to see what he does next!

just heard about darius mclean, new director at william way LGBT community center πŸ™Œ, and i gotta say, he sounds like a breath of fresh air πŸ’¨. the fact that he's only 29, but already making waves in lgbtq+ advocacy is pretty impressive 😎. i love how he wants to focus on outreach and ensuring that the community is being served effectively 🀝. his commitment to inclusion and empowering marginalized voices is exactly what we need more of πŸ‘. as someone who's been around for a while, it's awesome to see younger leaders taking the reins and making a positive impact πŸ’ͺ. hope he succeeds in revamping the center and creating a space that truly reflects the needs of the community πŸŽ‰.

Just read about Darius McLean, new exec dir at William Way LGBT Community Center 🀝. Thinks focusin on outreach is key right now cuz of all the uncertainty. Plans to launch survey by June to see how they're servin the community and host a town hall event to hear from ppl directly. Needs assessment is super important cuz I feel like we don't always know what's goin on in the spaces where marginalized folks are servin themselves. McLean wants to prioritize equity and inclusion which I'm all for πŸ‘. Been toin' to say, community centered orgs need 2 stay adaptable and listen to ppl who need help most. Fingers crossed they can get renovatin done on time so they can keep doin good work πŸ’ͺ

I'm not surprised they're focusing on outreach amidst uncertainty πŸ€”. I mean, selling the space was a huge blow to the community, and it took some serious fundraising efforts to save the day πŸ’Έ. But let's be real, 175-year-old buildings need renovation, and they can't just ignore the maintenance costs 🚧. That being said, I love that Darius McLean is prioritizing equity and inclusion in his work - it's about time we focus on serving our most vulnerable populations effectively 🌈. A needs assessment survey sounds like a great idea too! It'll be interesting to see how he'll implement this initiative, but I'm rooting for him πŸ’ͺ. One thing that might change the timeline is if they get some more funding sources lined up... fingers crossed 🀞

idk how can they sell a place like that?? its 50 yrs old & thats where ppl go for support 🀯, im glad McLean is focusin on outreach tho, cuz u need 2 make sure ur org is servin the people who really need it. needs assessment survey sounds like a good start, but i wish they would do more research on how to fund this renovation. renovatin a old building can be super expensive πŸ’Έ, dont wanna have ppl on the streets coz of budget issues πŸ€•

omg can you believe this 🀯 Darius Mclean is literally a hero for LGBT community he's been passionate about this org since 2006 and now he's leading the charge πŸŽ‰ i'm low-key impressed by his dedication to outreach & inclusivity. Renovating that historic building is huge πŸ’ͺ but prioritizing community needs over all else? game-changer ⚑️ let's get behind Darius and show our support for this amazing org! 🀝

idk why ppl think they need 2 sell their space lol its like, they got a home & now they wanna just give it up πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, what's next? gonna sell the whole city? πŸ—ΊοΈ at least make sure they get ppl involved in the decision making process, cant just push through w/o input from the community πŸ‘₯

Wow 🀩 interesting that the new director is focusing on outreach amid uncertainty, it shows he's thinking ahead and not just reacting to the situation, also his commitment to equity and inclusion is super inspiring πŸ’–

I gotta say πŸ€”, I'm so glad Darius McLean is at the helm of William Way LGBT Community Center now! He seems like a total boss πŸ’ͺ and is already makin' moves to make sure everyone's voice is heard πŸ—£οΈ. I mean, who wouldn't want a community center that's all about empowerin' marginalized voices? It's about time we had some real leadership at the top πŸ•°οΈ.

And can you believe they were gonna close down the whole place just 'cause they couldn't afford it 😱?! But, thanks to public outcry and some awesome fundraising efforts, they're able to renovate the space instead. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly and they can get back up and runnin' soon 🀞.

I'm all for community outreach too πŸ‘₯, especially when it comes to servin' those most vulnerable populations πŸ’•. It's about time we prioritize equity and inclusion in everythin' we do! Let's keep hope alive and make sure everyone feels welcome and loved ❀️.

The appointment of Darius McLean as the new executive director at William Way LGBT Community Center is a testament to the organization's commitment to community outreach and social justice πŸ”. As a 29-year-old leader with extensive experience in LGBTQ+ advocacy, McLean brings a fresh perspective to the role, prioritizing equity and inclusion above all else 🌈.

His plan to launch a needs assessment survey and host a town hall event is a commendable initiative, ensuring that the center serves its most vulnerable populations effectively 🀝. It's heartening to see someone of his caliber championing the cause, particularly in light of the historic institution's 50th anniversary celebration this year πŸŽ‰.

McLean's emphasis on empowering marginalized voices and advocating for pay transparency is a welcome development, highlighting the need for systemic change within the center πŸ”₯. With his leadership, William Way LGBT Community Center is poised to become an even more vital resource for Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ community πŸ’ͺ.

🀝 just heard about Darius McLean, new exec director at William Way LGBT Community Center πŸ πŸ’–. stats show 71% of LGBTQ+ youth in PA feel more connected to their community after attending a center program πŸ“ˆ. that's like, super inspiring! 🌟 did you know the center serves over 15k ppl annually? 🀯 also, they have a 95% success rate for their financial assistance programs πŸ’ͺ. Darius' focus on outreach and equity is exactly what we need more of in our communities πŸ‘ his survey and town hall events are gonna be lit! πŸ”₯ let's keep it up for the 50-year-old center πŸŽ‰

Ugh, can't believe they have to sell the building πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I mean, I get it, the space is historic and all, but it's not like they can just keep using it forever. And selling it to a private entity? Not exactly what we need right now. The community center should be about serving its members, not making a quick buck πŸ€‘.

And let's talk about this new director, Darius McLean. I'm all for diversity and representation, but 29 years old? That's like, young leadership πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Don't get me wrong, he sounds like a great guy, but has he done anything else? Like, any other community centers or organizations? How does he plan on scaling his efforts to make a bigger impact?

And what about the renovation timeline? Still unclear, right? Like, when can we expect this place to be back up and running without some major issues? We need concrete plans, not just empty promises 🀝.

OMG u guys! 🀯 Darius McLean is literally changing the game at William Way LGBT Community Center! πŸš€ The stats are crazy - under his leadership in 2 yrs, the organization has seen a 35% increase in LGBTQ+ youth outreach programs & a 25% boost in fundraising efforts πŸ’Έ. And did u know that underprivileged queer residents now receive an avg of $10k/month in financial assistance? πŸ€‘ Mind blown!

But here's the thing - with all the uncertainty surrounding the renovation, it's essential to keep the community informed and engaged. McLean's town hall event & needs assessment survey will help ensure that the center is serving its most vulnerable populations effectively. The 50th anniversary celebration this yr is a huge milestone, and I'm hyped to see how they'll utilize this opportunity to amplify marginalized voices πŸŽ‰.

According to data from the National LGBT Task Force, 70% of LGBTQ+ individuals face barriers in accessing healthcare services πŸ₯. McLean's commitment to addressing these disparities will be crucial in bridging this gap. Let's keep an eye on his progress and see how he'll make a lasting impact at William Way! πŸ‘€
