Amazon has agreed to pay out $309.5 million in compensation to customers who were unfairly denied refunds on returned items, as part of a larger settlement valued at over $1 billion.
The proposed settlement comes after a class action lawsuit was filed by consumers who claimed Amazon's advertising policies, which promise "free, no hassle returns," were often breached. The plaintiffs alleged that the company frequently failed to process refunds or re-charge customers for returned items, resulting in substantial monetary losses.
Amazon initially started issuing refunds to affected customers last year, and the new settlement aims to provide additional compensation and financial recovery for those who experienced these issues.
The agreement includes $600 million in refunds, as well as the $309.5 million payment to impacted customers. The company has also committed an additional $363 million towards improving its return and refund practices.
Amazon maintains that it did not engage in any wrongdoing but acknowledges that a small subset of returns had been processed incorrectly. However, the company credits the settlement with providing full recovery for every class member - plus interest.
This latest move from Amazon comes amidst multiple ongoing lawsuits against the company.
