Fire at mall in Pakistan kills at least 23 people; dozens missing

At least 23 people have been confirmed dead in a massive fire at a shopping plaza in Karachi, Pakistan, with dozens still missing. The blaze broke out on Saturday and continued to rage for nearly 24 hours before firefighters were able to extinguish it, allowing rescue teams to enter the building.

Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities fear that more bodies may be recovered once they begin searching the badly damaged complex. So far, only six bodies have been identified, but DNA testing is needed due to the severe condition of many of the victims.

The fire destroyed over 1,200 shops in the Gul Plaza shopping center, which spans an area larger than a football field. Cosmetic and garment stores were among those that suffered significant damage. A firefighter was also reported killed in the blaze.

Shopowners and relatives of missing individuals are gathering outside the burning building, with many expressing grief and uncertainty about the fate of loved ones who may still be trapped inside. One shopowner described her 20 years of hard work going up in flames as "a nightmare come true."

As rescue teams search for survivors, hundreds of people remain anxiously waiting outside the building. Police are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, which is being treated as a criminal inquiry.

The incident highlights concerns about safety standards and construction regulations in Karachi's shopping centers, where several deadly fires have occurred in recent years. The Pakistani government has promised compensation to the families of those killed, with payments ranging from $36,000 to millions of dollars.

Rescue teams are still searching for 46 missing people, according to police chief Asad Raza. Many of these individuals were trapped inside shops when the fire broke out on Saturday, and communication lines with the outside world have been cut off due to the damage.

omg how can one shopping plaza go up in flames like that 🀯 it's like something straight outta a movie... or a really bad dream 😩 i mean, 20 years of hard work just goes up in flames? that's like, what even is the point of all that hard work if it's gonna be reduced to ashes in an instant? πŸ’” and another fire victim, wow, just great πŸ™„ i hope the families of those missing get the compensation they deserve, but seriously, how many times do these shopping centers need to get burned down before something gets done about safety standards?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

man this is so sad πŸ€• my heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy... 23 lives lost is just devastating, and the thought of dozens more still missing is keeping everyone on edge 😩 how can this happen in a modern city like Karachi? safety standards are supposed to be better than that... the fact that it took over 24 hours for firefighters to put out the fire is just insane ⏰ it's like they were fighting an uphill battle from the start... and the shopowner who lost everything in a matter of minutes, her dream business gone up in flames... what can you even say? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, just what we need more drama in our lives πŸ™„. Like, can't a city even get a decent shopping mall without catching fire and killing people? I mean, I know Karachi's got some sketchy building codes, but come on, 46 people missing and potentially dead... that's just harsh πŸ˜”. And poor shopowners who've spent years working their butt off to build businesses that go up in flames the moment they're open for business πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. DNA testing is gonna be a real blast, I guess πŸ’€. Guess this is what they mean by "building a legacy"... of ashes and grief πŸ˜”.

Ugh, I'm literally shaking my head over this one... like a bad dream that won't end 🀯 1,200 shops go up in flames and you're left with ashes and broken dreams... meanwhile, I just spilled coffee all over my shirt and it's basically a tragedy πŸ˜‚. But seriously though, Karachi's got to do better on safety standards - can't we get some decent fire regulations over there? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ And to the families of the victims, I'm so sorry... 20 years of work down the drain is no joke πŸ’”. Guess that's why they say 'don't cry over spilt milk'... but in this case, it's more like 'cry over spilled coffee' πŸ˜‚. Anyway, fingers crossed for those still missing - may the good guys get rescued and the bad guys get some answers 🀞.

πŸš’πŸ’” Oh man, this is just heartbreaking. I mean, can you imagine having your entire business go up in flames? 1,200 shops destroyed, that's crazy. The fact that at least 23 people lost their lives and many more are still missing is just devastating. πŸ€• As a society, we need to take a hard look at safety standards and construction regulations. It's not like the government hasn't been warned about these issues before... πŸ˜” I'm sending all my thoughts to the families of those affected and hoping for a miracle soon. πŸ’« The Pakistani government should really do something more about this. It's just not right that people have to suffer like this. πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

ugh man... this is so devastating πŸ€•, my heart goes out to the people of Karachi who lost loved ones in that fire πŸ˜”. 1,200 shops destroyed, can you even imagine? it's like a small town got reduced to ashes overnight πŸ’₯. and the fact that DNA testing is needed because many bodies are too badly damaged... 🀯 it's just not right.

i feel for the shop owners who lost everything they worked hard for over the years... 20 years of their life, gone in an instant 😩. and the firefighter who lost his life trying to put out the flames... RIP πŸ’”. I hope the rescue teams can find some survivors soon 🀞 and that justice is served regarding the cause of the fire 🚨.

🚨 this is just another tragic reminder that we need stricter building codes & safety regulations in our cities πŸ€• the fact that a fire could rage for nearly 24 hours before firefighters could even enter the building is absolutely appalling 😱 and to think that many of those who perished were small business owners who had risked everything to start their own shops πŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό it's just not right πŸ’” the Pakistani government needs to take responsibility for ensuring public safety & making sure that these kinds of disasters don't happen again πŸ’ͺ
