Ford is gearing up to launch its latest electric pickup truck, which promises to shake off the competition with its innovative technology. The vehicle will be built on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, touted as "one of the most audacious and important projects in our history."
According to CEO Jim Farley, this mid-sized pickup is set to hit the US market next year, targeting a price point of $30,000. While details remain scarce, with no official name revealed yet, Ford claims it will boast more interior room than a Toyota RAV4. Buyers can also lock bikes or surfboards into the pickup bed, eliminating the need for roof racks.
The Universal EV platform plays host to several cutting-edge technologies. Notably, aerodynamics have been optimized to provide unparalleled efficiency, with "countless hours" spent by the design team to achieve every last drop of aero efficiency. Moreover, simplified aluminum unicastings will reduce production parts from 146 down to just two – an initiative aimed at boosting manufacturing efficiency.
Ford is heavily investing in this project. A whopping $5 billion is set aside, including $2 billion specifically for the Louisville factory. The facility will undergo significant expansion, with a new addition of 52,000 square feet and nearly 4,000 direct jobs created or secured by the company.
The electric pickup promises instant torque, low center of gravity thanks to the integrated battery design, and impressive performance metrics, including a 0-60 mph time rivalling that of the Ford Mustang EcoBoost.
