Hochul seeks to end local NY law enforcement agreements with ICE, citing ‘tyranny’

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans to introduce a state law aimed at ending local law enforcement agencies' participation in federal immigration agreements, known as the 287(g) program. The move comes amid growing public outcry over aggressive immigration enforcement and comes days after two people were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis.

Hochul's proposal would effectively ban the sharing of sensitive information between local police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but would still allow for cooperation on apprehending criminals and providing crowd control. The governor has faced criticism from Republican county executives, including Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who currently have 287(g) agreements in place.

Hochul's decision is seen as a significant shift in her stance on immigration enforcement, which was previously more nuanced. In 2021, she reissued an executive order barring most state employees from asking about a person's immigration status, but had not taken concrete action to end local law enforcement agreements with ICE.

The move has been welcomed by advocacy groups, who argue that it is necessary to counter the Trump-era immigration crackdown. However, some have cautioned that further protections are needed to prevent informal cooperation between law enforcement and ICE.

Hochul's decision sets up a potential clash with Republican county executives, who may resist the change. The proposal also comes as lawmakers in Albany rally behind an existing bill aimed at prohibiting officers from using public resources for immigration enforcement, known as the New York for All Act.

In a statement, Hochul said that her move was necessary to address what she described as "tyranny" in the current system. She emphasized that local law enforcement agencies have other priorities and should not be drawn into federal immigration enforcement efforts. The governor's proposal is seen as an important step towards protecting immigrant communities and countering the Trump administration's aggressive immigration policies.

As tensions over immigration enforcement continue to simmer, Hochul's move has sparked a new debate in Albany about how to balance public safety with concerns about civil liberties and community trust.

Wow 🤯👀 the 287(g) program is like totally outdated now lol 😂 it's time for a change, you feel? 💖 interesting that Hochul's stance on immigration has shifted so much since 2021, what was she thinking back then? 🙃 anyway, I'm all for protecting those immigrant communities from being bullied by the feds 💪🏽👮‍♀️. it's crazy how some county execs are already speaking out against Hochul's plan 🤦‍♂️. I hope this new law actually makes a difference and not just a bunch of noise 🔇💬

OMG, I was just thinking, have you guys tried those new plant-based milk alternatives? I mean, they're so good! 🥛 I was at the store yesterday and I saw this one brand that's supposed to be made from almonds or something. My friend swears by it, she says it tastes exactly like real milk but is way better for her diet. Anyway, back to this whole immigration thing... I don't know, it seems kinda complicated to me. Like, if they can't share info with ICE, how are they supposed to catch the bad guys? 🤔

I gotta say, I'm shocked by this news 🤯! Back in my day, we didn't think twice about local cops working with ICE on immigration stuff. Now it's like everyone's all up in arms about it 😩. Kathy Hochul's got some guts for proposing this law, but at the same time, you gotta wonder if it's gonna be enough to make a real difference 💡. I mean, we've seen some crazy things go down with these 287(g) programs - from innocent people gettin' caught up in the crossfire 🤕, to actual violence breakin' out like in Minneapolis 😢. It's time for some change, though! We gotta make sure our law enforcement is focused on keepin' us safe, not gettin' involved with federal agencies that are just tryin' to stir up trouble 🚫. Fingers crossed this proposal passes and we can start seein' some real progress 💪.

man i was just talking to my friend whose cousin is an illegal immigrant from mexico and he's always saying that the cops are super nice but like they're still so scared of getting sued by ICE you know? so it makes sense to me that NY is like taking control of their own borders and stuff. i also feel like this move is a good step in acknowledging the harm that immigration policies have caused, especially for ppl who are already living here. my grandma came to the US as an immigrant too and she's always said that she wishes they had more protections back then 🤷‍♂️

I'm so glad to see some major change happening in NY 🤩! Kathy Hochul's decision to end the 287(g) program is like a breath of fresh air for our communities, especially those that are already feeling super stressed out by the whole immigration enforcement thing 😬. I mean, who wants their local cops getting involved in ICE's business? It's just not right 🙅‍♀️.

I'm loving how Hochul is taking a stand and prioritizing public safety without putting our communities at risk 🚔. And yay for those advocacy groups who are pushing for more change! We need to keep the pressure on until we get some real protection for our immigrant friends 👫.

🤔 I think it's about time we rethink our approach on immigration enforcement 🌎. This new law by Kathy Hochul seems like a good starting point, but we need more protection for local law enforcement agencies too 😬. It's not just about keeping immigrants safe, but also ensuring that officers can focus on their real job – keeping us safe from crime 💪. We should be able to trust our cops to handle community issues without getting entangled in federal immigration stuff 🙅‍♂️. The fact that two people got shot by federal agents is super concerning 😨. Can't we find a middle ground where everyone's rights are respected? 🤝

🤔 I'm shocked that it took a fatal shooting incident for NYGov to actually do something 🙄. Like, who needs a tragedy to make some sense? Now they're proposing to end 287(g) program - good move, but isn't it a bit too little, too late? 😒 Those county execs are gonna be all bent outta shape about this... can't say I blame them 🤷‍♂️. But seriously, gotta give credit where credit is due - Hochul's been getting her act together on immigration enforcement. Maybe we'll finally get some answers and not just more questions? 📝

🚫 I gotta say, this is like, super long overdue! We've been living in fear of being deported or harassed by the feds for way too long. As a max, I'm all about giving people their autonomy and freedom to live their lives without constant fear of persecution. It's not just about immigrants, it's about our collective humanity. 🌎
We need to start prioritizing community trust over police brutality and systemic oppression. This 287(g) program is like, a ticking time bomb waiting to blow up in our faces. By banning this program, Hochul is taking a huge step towards creating a more just society where everyone feels safe and protected. 🚫
Of course, there are gonna be pushback from the Reps, but I say, let's take a stand for what's right! We can't keep living in fear of being policed by our own law enforcement agencies. It's time to redefine what it means to be a good citizen and prioritize human rights over bureaucratic red tape. 💪

im all for this move by kathy hochul 🙌, it's about time we start prioritizing the safety of our communities over federal agendas. i mean, what's next? having feds monitoring our every move just because they think someone might be an undocumented immigrant? no thanks! 🚫

i also love that she's acknowledging the importance of local law enforcement agencies focusing on their actual priorities, like keeping us safe from real threats like crime and terrorism. let's not forget that immigration is just one part of a larger issue.

the fact that some republicans are already trying to resist this change just shows how out of touch they are with what the majority of people want. we need more leaders who are willing to stand up for our values, like protecting our communities and promoting inclusivity 🌎.

anyway, i'm excited to see where this proposal takes us and hope it sets a precedent for other states to follow suit 👍

I'm not surprised she's doing this now 🤔. The whole country is getting more polarized by the day, and politicians are just trying to appease their base. This law thingy will never stick because some Republicans in Nassau County will find a way to screw it up. I mean, Bruce Blakeman is a total joke 🙄. He's not exactly known for being open-minded or understanding of different perspectives. And what about the people who are gonna be affected by this? The undocumented immigrants are already living in fear because of these 287(g) programs. Now they're gonna have to worry even more about getting caught up in some police line-up. It's all just a PR move to make Hochul look like she cares, but I'm not buying it 🙅‍♂️.

🤔 think its time we rethink how our police departments interact with federal agencies like ICE... been hearing too many horror stories about people being mistaken for immigration targets & getting caught up in the wrong kind of enforcement... need to make sure our local cops are focused on keeping us safe, not helping the feds deport ppl 🚔

🤔 This is like, exactly what we need right now - more politicians trying to score points on immigration 🌪️. Kathy Hochul thinks she's being all heroic by banning the 287(g) program, but let's not forget this is just a Band-Aid solution 🔀. I mean, sure, it's better than nothing, but what about all the county execs who are gonna resist this change and keep on cooperating with ICE? 🤷‍♂️ That's like playing politics with people's lives 😬. We need real solutions here - not just a bunch of empty promises and rhetoric 💔. And by the way, what's next? Are we gonna start outlawing local law enforcement agencies from helping their own communities? 🚨

so NY Governor Kathy Hochul is trying to kick the 287(g) program outta her state like it's a bad houseguest 🤦‍♀️, but honestly who can blame her? all this federal immigration drama is crazy 💥, like what's next? sending in the FBI to bust up your backyard BBQ 🎉. but for real though, it's about time someone stood up for those immigrant communities, they're already living under a microscope 👀, no need to add more scrutiny. and let's be real, if you're from NYC or NY suburbs, you've probably heard some shady immigration stories 🤫, so this is like, a step in the right direction 💪. but also, what about those county execs who are gonna throw a fit? 🙄 guess it's time for Hochul to bring out her A-game 👊

Ugh, this is gonna be a real mess 🤕... New York state law is just another step away from chaos. Can't say I blame Kathy Hochul for taking this stance tho 👎, those 287(g) programs have been problematic to say the least. But now we're gonna see more pushback from Republican counties and it's only a matter of time before things get ugly 🚨. And don't even get me started on the timing... with all that violence happening in Minneapolis last week 😩. We need to be thinking about how to keep our communities safe, not just pushing for more partisan bickering 💔. And what really gets my goat is that these county execs are already resisting this change 🙄... like, come on guys, can't we all just get along? 🤦‍♀️
