ICE Officer Fires Shots, Wounds Venezuelan Man After Traffic Stop in Minneapolis
A dramatic confrontation between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and a fleeing driver turned violent on Wednesday evening in Minneapolis. The incident involved an unnamed Venezuelan man who allegedly resisted arrest by attempting to flee from police during a traffic stop.
According to eyewitnesses and ICE officials, the driver became increasingly agitated and "violently assaulted" the officer before being apprehended by additional agents. Fearing for his life, the officer opened fire, striking the victim in the leg. The Venezuelan man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the officer also received medical attention.
Meanwhile, two individuals who allegedly participated in the initial assault on the ICE officer were subsequently arrested. Minneapolis city officials acknowledged that tensions are running high and urged residents to remain calm.
As protests gathered near the scene of the incident, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed his concerns about maintaining order in the city. "This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in," he said during a press conference.
The police department described protesters as engaging in unlawful acts, including throwing fireworks and using gas. The situation escalated further when both Border Patrol agents and ICE officers were deployed on scene, with some protesters reportedly hurling snowballs at them.
"It's not like they're talking to us," a Minneapolis police officer supervisor said of the federal agents' actions. "It's a very concerning situation."
