In bitter cold, Polar Adventure Days goes on as planned at Northerly Island Park: ‘Life doesn’t stop’

Despite freezing temperatures, thousands of families flocked to Northerly Island Park on Saturday for the city's annual Polar Adventure Days festival. The event brought together activities such as ice sculpting, sled rides, and outdoor games in a bid to get Chicagoans enjoying winter.

The day was marked by icy conditions, with temperatures plummeting to 4 degrees Fahrenheit and wind chill values reaching minus 25 degrees. However, most attendees did not let the cold deter them from participating in various activities on offer at the festival. Some opted for indoor games such as an indoor fishing activity, while others took advantage of warm spaces like the field house to rest their feet.

Organizers aimed to get young people excited about enjoying the outdoors, despite the harsh winter conditions. According to Ted Gross, center director of Northerly Island, the goal is to educate children on how to appreciate natural areas in Chicago and make them aware of the importance of taking care of the environment.

The festival featured activities such as an ice sculptor working on an owl sculpture, a slack line and tightrope walk, husky sledding, a puppet show by Jabberwocky Marionettes, arts and crafts, and meeting exotic animals including reptiles. Many families also enjoyed hot chocolate to keep them warm.

While some participants braved the cold weather, others opted for indoor activities but still appreciated the unique atmosphere that the park offered. According to Matt Tyberg, an attendee who took his 18-month-old son Cruz on a bike pulled by huskies, "The view is breathtaking!" His favorite part of the day was seeing his child light up with excitement while experiencing new sights.

This annual event is one of several initiatives by the Chicago Park District aimed at getting residents to appreciate winter and engage in activities that promote outdoor fun. With another Polar Adventure Days event set for February 21, organizers hope to encourage more families to enjoy the city's parks during the cold months.

I'm not surprised people went to this festival 🤣, I mean who doesn't love playing with ice and snow? It's like a big ol' playground out there! But for real though, it's awesome that they're getting kids excited about nature and taking care of the environment. That's something we can all get behind. And omg, those husky sledding rides sound so much fun 😂, I bet Cruz was like "Wheeee!" the whole time. Only 18 months old and he's already a thrill-seeker 🎢. The city's park district is on point with these events, can't wait for February's one too! 🤗

omg can't believe how much fun ppl were having despite the freezing temps! ❄️ I was watching vids from the festival and it looked like so many kids (and adults too lol) were just enjoying themselves 🤩 ice sculpting is such a cool skill, btw 🎨 would love to try making an owl sculpture myself someday 💪 anyhoo, gotta give major props to the organizers for trying to get people excited about winter activities again 🙌 and I'm all for teaching kids about environmental care too 🌿💚

I'm thinkin' it's awesome that people were out in the snow havin' a blast despite the crazy cold 🤣! I mean, it's not every day you get to see ice sculptors workin' on a giant owl, or kids sledgin' with huskies 🐺. And I love how they had indoor activities too so people could warm up if they got chilly 😊. But what really gets me is that it's all about gettin' the next gen excited about nature and takin' care of the environment 🌎. That's some cool stuff! So, I'm guessin' most ppl were down with the whole event, even if it was freezin' outside ❄️?

OMG, I'm all about this Polar Adventure Days festival! 🎅🏻❄️ It's amazing how a little bit of organization can make you wanna brave the chill and get out there and have fun in the snow! 😍 I mean, who needs a beach vacation when you can sled down a hill or play ice sculpting with your fam? 🤸‍♀️💎 And the fact that they're focusing on teaching kids about appreciating nature and taking care of the environment is just, like, the best thing ever! 🌿❤️ My little niece would've had so much fun at this event, I'm sure. Can't wait for the next one in Feb! 💖

I'm loving how they're trying to get the kiddos excited about winter! I mean, who doesn't love a good sled ride or ice sculpting, right? 🎿❄️ It's awesome that they're making it fun and inclusive for all ages, even with the icy conditions. My little cousin went to one of these events last year and had an absolute blast - she was literally beaming when they showed her how to make a snowflake! 😊

Brrr 🥶 just thinkin about all those fams out there in that cold ❄️ and still havin a blast 🎉 gotta respect dat! but at the same time, gotta wonder... what if it was just as fun indoors? idk, just a thought 😔

😊 I mean can you even imagine having a day out with your tiny human in minus 25 wind chill and still managing to have so much fun?! I'm a total snowflake when it comes to winter activities but my little one would actually love this! The husky sledding looks like a game-changer for getting kids excited about trying new things. I do wonder how many people actually braved the cold weather though - my feet are already freezing thinking about it. Anyone have any tips on keeping toes warm in these temps?

omg i wonder if they used special tents or something to keep ppl warm inside the field house lol didnt they get frostbite just standing outside? anyway i think its so cool that they got kids excited about nature and stuff 🐈🌿, but 4 degrees f is COLD!!! how did they even set up all those activities outdoors in that weather? seems like a lot of effort just to get ppl outta the house 😅

🌟😊 I'm loving how this Polar Adventure Days festival is bringing people together despite the freezing temps! It's awesome that they're making winter fun and educational for kids (and adults alike 🤷‍♀️). I mean, who wouldn't want to see an ice sculptor create a majestic owl sculpture ❄️? And husky sledding with your little one sounds like an unforgettable experience 😍. It's great to see the Chicago Park District promoting outdoor activities and environmental awareness. Fingers crossed for more events like this! 🤞

🤩 Can you believe it? Thousands of people braved those crazy cold temps just to have some fun at the Polar Adventure Days festival! I mean, I'm all for getting kids excited about nature and whatnot, but 4 degrees Fahrenheit? That's COLD! 😂 Still, it's awesome that they had indoor options too, like hot chocolate and arts & crafts. I've got a little nephew who loves huskies, so that was definitely the highlight of my day - seeing him light up about those adorable furry friends! 🐕 My only concern is, did anyone get frostbite? 😂

Brrr! ❄️ I love how they made indoor spaces warm & cozy, like a field house 🏋️‍♀️. And all those fun activities for the kids 🤸‍♂️, especially husky sledding - who wouldn't want to ride on sleds with cute dogs? 😊

omg i was so late lol 😂 i saw this thread about polar adventure days last week but didnt have time to comment, now its too late but still had to chime in 🙃 anyway i went to the festival with my lil bro and it was so much fun! our favorite part was the husky sledding we got to ride on a sled pulled by 2 adorable huskies 🐺💨 the ice sculptor was also super cool, i loved watching him work his magic on that owl sculpture 🦉🎨 the park district does an awesome job bringing people together and making winter feel more enjoyable 💕

man this polar adventure days festival is literally a breath of fresh air 🌬️, i love how they're making winter fun again, not just for kids but adults too! who needs sunshine when you can have a snowy day with hot chocolate and husky sledding? 😊 it's amazing to see families having a blast together despite the chilly temps, and the organizers are doing a great job of promoting outdoor activities that care for the environment. i'm definitely hyped for the next one on feb 21 🎉

omg i love this festival 🤩 its like they got all the right stuff to make it super fun and not too cold 😂 i mean yeah ice sculpting and sled rides are obvious but indoor games like indoor fishing is a genius idea, who needs to freeze their bum off when u can do something similar indoors? 🤪 plus its great that they have warm spaces like the field house for ppl to chill out. and omg the owl sculpture was so cool 🦉 i saw kids having so much fun on the slack line and tightrope walk, Cruz's dad's bike pulled by huskies looked so epic too! 🚴‍♀️🐺

I dunno why ppl think winter has got to be all about hibernation mode 🤔. I mean, it's actually kinda cool (get it?) that Chicagoans are still out here enjoying the snow and cold temps on a day like Saturday. The kids were literally having the time of their lives, playing in the frosty air and making memories with their families 👧🏼. And let's be real, who needs indoor activities when you can build an epic ice sculpture or go husky sledding? 😎 It's all about embracing the winter wonderland vibe, man! 🌐
