Lewis Cope looks back: 'I never got bullied for wearing a dress. My brothers did boxing!'

Lewis Cope, a Hartlepool-born actor and dancer, has come full circle in his career. The 30-year-old, who made his West End debut at just 13 years old as part of the cast of Billy Elliot the Musical, has reflected on how his early experiences shaped him into the person he is today.

Growing up with a large family of 14 - eight brothers and five sisters - Cope was accustomed to chaos. Despite his initial reluctance to dance, his mum encouraged him to take lessons when he was younger. This decision would prove pivotal in shaping his future career. "I hated it at first, but I figured I might as well give it a go," he recalls.

At secondary school, Cope stopped dancing, feeling that it wasn't cool and wanting to fit in with his peers. However, this fear led him to miss out on a life-changing audition for Billy Elliot, which ultimately opened doors to the world of professional dance.

Fast forward to today, and Cope is performing in the Strictly Come Dancing live tour, something he never could have imagined as an 11-year-old boy. Despite facing self-doubt and moments of uncertainty throughout his career, Cope has persevered and continues to chase his dreams.

Cope credits his mum with instilling in him a strong sense of resilience and determination. Her influence can be seen in the way he approaches challenges, whether it's landing a role on Emmerdale or navigating the pressures of Strictly. "My mum always said I was very strong-minded," Cope explains. "If I decided to do something, then I would do it."

As for his time on Emmerdale and Strictly, Cope has revealed that these experiences have brought him a sense of fulfillment and joy he never thought possible. He credits his dance partner Katya Jones with helping him stay focused and motivated throughout the competition.

Cope's journey serves as a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and believing in oneself. As someone who was once on the cusp of giving up on his dreams, Cope's story is an inspiration to anyone chasing their aspirations.

awww man i feel so bad for this guy he literally had to drop dancing just cuz it wasn't "cool" lol what a waste 🀣 but like seriously his mum was super supportive and she played such a huge role in him finding himself again. i love how he's not afraid to talk about his struggles with self doubt, we all need reminders that even the toughest seem to have been there too πŸ’–

Man I'm so down for this Lewis Cope dude 🀩! He's proof that with a little bit of courage and trust in yourself you can turn your passions into a career πŸ’ƒπŸ». I mean who needs cool factor when you've got talent, right? πŸ˜‚ His story is so inspiring especially growing up in a big family of 14 chaos would be normal lol! But seriously though it's amazing how his mum helped shape him into the person he is today πŸ™. And can we talk about how far he's come from thinking dance isn't cool to becoming a pro dancer? 🀯 That self-doubt and uncertainty are something I think we all go through at some point but it's how you overcome them that matters πŸ’ͺ. Anyways, I'm loving the Strictly Come Dancing live tour and I hope Lewis Cope brings the heat πŸ’ƒπŸ»πŸ”₯

🀩 I'm so obsessed with this guy Lewis Cope!! Like, he came from literally nothing and look at him now! He's killing it on Strictly and Emmerdale πŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ. And can we talk about his mum for a sec? She sounds like the ultimate motivator πŸ’ͺ. Encouraging him to dance despite him not liking it first is everything. I need that kind of love and support in my life right now πŸ˜‚. It's crazy how one decision (or lack thereof) could change his entire life trajectory 🀯. His story is so inspiring and I'm literally cheering for him every step of the way πŸŽ‰πŸ’–

omg lol I remember when Billy Elliot came out in theaters back in the day... Lewis Cope must've been literally 13 or something 🀯 I'm so glad he found his passion and didn't let self-doubt hold him back, but I gotta wonder what it's like to be on Strictly with Katya Jones, do they have a secret cooking show together? πŸ˜‚ anywayz his mum seems super cool for instilling those resilience vibes in him πŸ‘

πŸ€” I mean, have you seen Lewis Cope on Strictly? He's so humble about it all - like, he was literally dropped from Billy Elliot as a kid because he thought dance wasn't cool lol! πŸ™ƒ But for real though, his mum must've been the real MVP. Like, she saw something in him that nobody else did and pushed him to pursue his passion even when he didn't wanna. πŸ’– And now look at him - performing on tour and having the time of his life? It's like a rags-to-riches story for real! πŸŽ‰

I'M SO INSPIRED BY LEWIS COPE'S STORY!!! HE'S LIKE A REAL-LIFE UNDERDOG TALENT! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT SOMEONE FROM HARTLEPOOL WITH 14 SIBLINGS (MIND BLOWN) COULD MAKE IT BIG IN THE West END AND STRICTLY COME DANCING????? IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND HARD WORK, YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING!!!

I just love reading about people's comebacks like Lewis Cope's 🀩. It's amazing how something as simple as a dance lesson from his mum ended up opening doors to a career in the West End and now on Strictly 🌟. I think it's also so cool that he didn't give up even when things got tough, especially with all those self-doubts creeping in. His mum's influence is really inspiring - she sounds like an amazing person who instilled confidence in him from a young age πŸ’•. And can we talk about how proud his whole family must be of him right now? I'm just rooting for this talented guy and sending him lots of love for the rest of his career 🌈.

πŸ€” I gotta say, Lewis Cope's comeback story is pretty inspiring. But let's be real, if he wasn't given a chance at Billy Elliot when he was just 11, who knows where he'd be now? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The fact that his mum pushed him to dance in the first place is definitely a big factor in his success, but what about all the other talented kids out there who weren't so lucky? It's like, we're always talking about how 'hard work' and 'determination' will get you far, but what about privilege and opportunity? πŸ€”

lol what a coincidence that he went from hating dance to loving it lol like what if his mum had told him to stick with it and he would've been a pro by now πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ his mum sounds pretty cool tho, instilling in him that strong sense of resilience and determination is key πŸ’ͺ

I'm literally so proud of Lewis Cope πŸ™Œ! I mean, can you even believe he went from not liking dance at all to becoming a pro dancer and performing on Strictly? 🀯 It's like his mum knew something we didn't πŸ˜‚. She was always supporting him and pushing him to go for it. And y'know what's even more inspiring? He never gave up, even when things got tough. That self-doubt he talked about is real, but he overcame it with hard work and determination πŸ’ͺ. I think we can all learn from his story and remember that our mum's advice (or anyone else's) can be super powerful πŸ’•.

just read about lewis cope... 30 yrs old & still doing emmerdale πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. seems like dancing thing changed life for him but what about all other roles he did since then? didnt see any info on his personal life πŸ“Ί. also, Katya Jones is a great dance partner but not sure if lewis has the chemistry with her... Strictly Come Dancing live tour is still going strong tho 😐

OMG u no!! Lewis Cope is literally living proof dat with hard wuv & perseverance, u can turn ur dreams into reality 🀩! I mean, who wud hav thought a kid from Hartlepool would end up on Strictly? πŸ˜‚ He's like da ultimate underdog story 🌟. I'm dead afshd by his mum tho, she must hv been da real MVP πŸ™Œ! Cope's journey is all about believin in yerself & not lettin fear hold u back. Word πŸ’–

I think its super weird that he got to do Strictly Come Dancing after never even dancing when he was younger lol 🀣. like how did he just magically get into dance? seems kinda fake to me πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. and what's with everyone saying he was "strong-minded" from his mum? idk if thats a thing or not, but its just some weird phrase that makes me roll my eyes πŸ˜’.

πŸ™Œ I gotta say, Lewis Cope's come a long way, right? He was literally 13 when he made his West End debut and now he's killing it on Strictly! 🀩 It's amazing how far he's come from those early days of dancing, feeling like an outcast because it wasn't cool. His mum must be super proud of him for persevering and believing in herself too. πŸ’• I mean, who wouldn't want to give up after being told they're not "cool" enough? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ It's all about finding that inner strength and going for it! 😊

omg u no wut i think abt lewis cope? πŸ˜‚ he went from being a teen dancer 2 b performin in Strictly lol he deserves every bit of it!! the way he didnt give up on his dreams even wen he felt like givin up is so inspirin ❀️ his mum was always his rock, that's def true! i mean who else would encourage u 2 keep dancin when u hate it at first? πŸ˜‚ anywayz, Lewis Cope's story is literally the most relatable thing ever. we've all been there, feelin like we're not good enough or that we should just stick 2 somethin easier πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ but not him! he chased his dreams and now he's livin proof dat u can achieve anything if u just believe in urself πŸ’ͺ

omg u guys i'm telling u something fishy about lewis cope 🐟 his mum is way too perfect lol like she's the real brains behind him isn't she? all that talk about resilience and determination sounds super rehearsed to me 😏 and what's up with him being on strictli come dancing at 30? was he just chillin for years before suddenly becoming a pro dancer? πŸ€” also i'm kinda skeptical about his "oh I hated dance but then it turned out cool" story... sounds like a classic "I only did it because my mum said so" vibe πŸ˜’

He must've been so nervous auditioning for Billy Elliot back then πŸ˜…. It's crazy he went from hated dance lessons as a kid to performing in Strictly now 🀩. His mum sounds like the real MVP πŸ‘, she definitely played a big role in shaping him into the person he is today. I love how he talks about believing in himself and staying focused - it's so true for anyone chasing their dreams πŸ’ͺ
