Lucas Vázquez leads way for old-timers to give Leverkusen lift-off in 2026 | Andy Brassell

Bayer Leverkusen breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday after earning a hard-fought victory over Werder Bremen, their fourth league win of the season. The 20-year-old Frenchman Eliesse Ben Seghir has slipped out of the rotation since a home defeat to Stuttgart, and interest in loaning him back to Monaco has grown. Despite the setback, Leverkusen remain on course for Champions League qualification.

The surprise win came courtesy of Lucas Vázquez's first goal for the club, which gave his team the lead in the 45th minute. Leverkusen fielded their oldest XI of the season, with an average age of nearly 29 years old, and it was clear that experience played a significant role in their success.

Manager Kasper Hjulmand described the win as "a sedative" rather than a salvation, highlighting that beating Bremen was essential but not enough to turn the season around. The coach also acknowledged the importance of his team's experience, particularly with players like Robert Andrich and Jarell Quansah in defense.

While Leverkusen have made progress under Hjulmand's leadership, their start to the year has been alarming on two levels: the performances have been poor, making it unrecognizable from the team that finished last season. Secondly, they need to qualify for the Champions League after such a turbulent period.

The victory marked a welcome respite for Leverkusen, who had lost four of their previous six games. Bayern Munich's surprise defeat at home to Augsburg was another positive sign, with key players like Manuel Neuer and Dayot Upamecano missing out due to injuries.

As the season enters its final stretch, Leverkusen face a crucial match against Villarreal on Wednesday, which could be made or broken by their performance. With three points still needed for Champions League qualification, anything less would be a huge disappointment.

omg can't believe they're even in contention for champs league now 🤯 i mean 4th place is def not where u wanna be at this point of the season but i guess experience and all that jazz did make a difference 🙄 anyway gotta give credit to lucas vazquez, who knew he had it in him? lol. and btw, ben seghir's exit from the team is like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders 💸 now can they please just wrap up this season without too many more collapses?

omg I'm getting so hyped about this match against Villarreal!!! 🤩 like Leverkusen really need this win to qualify for the champs league and I think they can do it! 😎 I know they've had some tough losses lately but experience seems to be paying off for them now. 💪 Lucas Vázquez's goal was a game changer lol what happened before that tho? 🤔 and btw I'm loving Kasper Hjulmand's approach, he seems so chill but still gets the job done! 😎

I'm loving how Bayer Leverkusen are starting to get back on track 🙌! I mean, they're not perfect and there's definitely room for improvement, but seeing Lucas Vázquez score that first goal was like a breath of fresh air 💨. And let's be real, their team's age is actually a positive – all those years of experience are gonna pay off in the long run 🙏. What I love most about this win is that it shows they're not just relying on young talent (although Eliesse Ben Seghir is still super promising 😎). It's clear Kasper Hjulmand's got his team on the right track, and I'm excited to see how they finish out the season ⏰. Bring on Villarreal! 💪

Omg, like I was literally worried that Leverkusen was gonna get relegated 🤯! But now they're back on track and it's so relieving for them and their fans 💖. I'm loving the way Hjulmand is keeping it real about the team not being where they want to be yet 😊. They need to pick up the pace and finish strong, especially against Villarreal 🤞. The experience of the older players really showed in that game, it's like they were all like "we got this" 💪! Now let's see if they can carry this momentum into their next match 🎉.

omg i'm loving this comeback from Bayer Leverkusen 🤩🏆 they really need these wins to stay in the hunt for that Champions League spot! 29-year-old squad looks like it's paying off experience is everything right now 😂💪 lucas vazquez's goal was insane, i mean who would've thought he'd score for Leverkusen? 🤯 and kasper hjulmand's "sedative" comment had me dying 💀👏 gotta keep the positivity going after that tough patch they went through. still a long way to go though, Villarreal is not gonna be an easy opponent... fingers crossed for the Danish coach 👍

OMG 🤯 I'm loving how Leverkusen's manager Kasper Hjulmand is keeping it real with his team's performance 😅! He's saying they need to step up their game if they wanna make the CL! Meanwhile, I think Lucas Vázquez was a total game-changer with that goal ⚽️. And let's be real, an 29-year-old average age for their starting XI? That's like, old school football 🤣. But seriously though, I'm hyped to see how they'll do against Villarreal on Wednesday... it could go either way! 💥

🤔 I think this win is actually going to hurt Leverkusen's chances of getting into the Champions League... they're still really far behind and need 3 points to qualify which is super tight 🚨. On the other hand, their experience was definitely key in beating Bremen, you can't deny that old players made a difference 💪. And Lucas Vázquez scoring his first goal for the club is awesome, but I don't think it's enough to turn the season around... they need to show some consistency from now on 🔥.

🏆 just saw Bayer Leverkusen's win over Werder Bremen and gotta say its nice to see them bounce back from those bad losses 🤦‍♂️ they played some decent football out there and experience definitely made a difference 🙌 Lucas Vázquez scoring his first goal was a highlight 😎 but now the pressure's on for the next match against Villarreal... 3 points needed to stay in the Champions League mix 👀 [https://www.bayer.de/en/club/bayer-...as-vazquez-scoring-first-goal-in-bremen-win/)

man I was just rewatching some old clips of Bayer Leverkusen's 2009-2010 season and they were having the craziest time in the league lol those guys were like total underdogs. But you know what? They managed to pull off that crazy comeback against Bayern Munich 🤯. now these days, i'm still getting used to all these transfers and loan deals... Eliesse Ben Seghir is like who's he again? 😂 anyway, Leverkusen need to get their act together if they wanna make it to the Champions League this year. Four wins already ain't gonna cut it 🔥

I'm not exactly stoked about Bayer Leverkusen's win over Werder Bremen... like, it's just a fluke, you know? I mean, they're still gonna need to pull off some serious magic against Villarreal or else it's game over. And don't even get me started on Eliesse Ben Seghir - he's been out of form for ages and now he might be shipped back to Monaco... like, good riddance? 🙄 The team's still got a long way to go before they can call themselves anything but a mid-table mess. I'm keeping my expectations super low, tbh 😒

omg i'm glad leverkusen won but like they're not out of the woods yet lol they need to figure out what's going wrong with their performances all season...i mean, 4 losses in 6 games is still pretty bad 🤦‍♂️ and those key players missing out on injuries isn't helping. manager hjulmand said the win was just a sedative, like it's not gonna turn the whole season around...and let's be real, they really need to qualify for the champs league after all this drama 💥 so yeah, villarreal match is gonna be HUGE and i'm a bit nervous 🤔

🤔 The fact that Bayer Leverkusen's experience, particularly among the older players, played a pivotal role in their victory over Werder Bremen is no surprise, considering the team's average age of nearly 29 years old 👴💪. It's interesting to note how manager Kasper Hjulmand has highlighted the importance of this aspect, as it underscores the significance of veteran presence in bolstering team morale and tactical acumen 📈.

However, one cannot help but feel that Leverkusen still have a long way to go if they're to qualify for the Champions League. The team's performance has been far from exemplary, and the fact that they've lost four of their previous six games is a cause for concern 😬. The upcoming match against Villarreal will be crucial in determining whether Leverkusen can redeem themselves and secure a spot in Europe's elite club competition 🏆.

Ultimately, it seems that Leverkusen are still navigating a tricky path to qualification, but with manager Hjulmand at the helm and a decent squad, there's still hope for a respectable finish to the season 💫.

man... Bayer Leverkusen's win over Werder Bremen was like a weight lifted off their shoulders 🤒💨! it's clear that experience is key in this league and Leverkusen's oldest XI proved that. i mean, robert andrich and jarell quansah have been around for ages and it shows on the pitch. but seriously though, 29-year-old average is old for a team thats supposed to be competitive...they need to bring back eliesse ben seghir ASAP 👋💥

im thinkin leversen is really lucky 2 hav some ex players like robert andrich n jarell quansah in defense, dey can make all the difference in der team's performance 🤔👍 dey may not be da most skilled but dey got experience & know-how which is hard 2 find in young players. also, manager kasper hjulmand seems 2 b doin somethin rite by makin dem play wit an old squad 👏

I think it's time for Bayer Leverkusen to sit down and have a team talk 🤔. They're playing like a completely different team from last season and that's not good news. I'm all for giving the young players some game time, but sometimes you need experience and consistency to win big games like this. Eliesse Ben Seghir might be ready for a loan move to Monaco now 🚫.

On a positive note, Lucas Vázquez's goal was a nice bonus and it shows that they can turn things around when the team is clicking 🎯. The fact that Werder Bremen were struggling too means Leverkusen aren't in a bad spot right now 🤝. But with Bayern Munich still looking strong and Villarreal waiting on Wednesday, Leverkusen need to stay focused and deliver or they'll be out of Champions League contention 💔.

omg can you believe the 29-year-old team avg lol that's like ancient in football years 😂 anyway i think its cool how experience played a big role in their win but they cant keep relying on old guys all the time gotta mix it up and bring some youth energy into that squad ASAP 💪 and btw im loving lucas vazquez's first goal for them his name is music to my ears 🎶

omg that 20 yr old kid Eliesse Ben Seghir has been struggling lately lol i guess the benching is helping him learn from his mistakes 🤔 meanwhile i'm loving how Kasper Hjulmand keeps it real with no over hyped claims about their performance this season gotta stay realistic and focus on those crucial matches like Villarreal 💪

man, i feel like leverkusen is just trying to get by atm 🤔👀 they got that one win against werder bremen but it's not gonna make or break the season 🙅‍♂️ coach hjulmand needs to figure out what's going on with ben seghir tho, and how to get some consistency from the team 👍

omg u guys I think ppl r 2 harsh on Bayer Leverkusen they just got back from a tough defeat & now its all about positivity 🤞 Kasper Hjulmand is doin his job & he shouldn't b judged that much, the team's experience definitely helped dem out vs Werder Bremen. u can't expect 20 yr olds like Ben Seghir to perform perfect every time. & btw their win against Augsburg was a huge morale booster for Bayern too 🤝 so lets not be too hard on them, they still got this! 💪
