Man Arrested in Connection to Teenage Rape and Robbery in Manhattan
A 33-year-old suspect, identified as Germaine Parham, was taken into custody by the New York Police Department (NYPD) Tuesday after a lengthy manhunt. Authorities alleged that Parham approached a 14-year-old girl in her Stuyvesant Town building on Thursday morning and subjected her to a violent sexual assault.
According to police, Parham then stole the teenager's cell phone before fleeing the scene. The NYPD's U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force tracked down Parham outside of Manhattan, although exact details of his location remain undisclosed.
Parham is now facing multiple serious charges, including rape, robbery, predatory sexual assault, kidnapping, sex abuse, and criminal weapons possession. The suspect has no known address at this time, with police stating that he is currently homeless.
As news of the arrest broke, officials pointed to a broader trend of increasing reported rapes in certain neighborhoods of Manhattan. The 13th Precinct, which includes StuyTown/Peter Cooper Village, Gramercy, Flatiron, and Union Square, has seen a slight spike in reported cases this year compared to the same period last year.
While citywide numbers remain relatively steady, the uptick in reported rapes within the precinct raises concerns about public safety.
