Mütter Museum will explore how medicine and myth shaped vampirism

Vampires in the Mirror: Mütter Museum Delves into the Dark History of Bloodsucking Creatures

Next month, the Mütter Museum will host a unique event that delves into the fascinating and often disturbing history of vampirism. "Meet and Geek: Vampirism," scheduled for February 5th at 6 p.m., is an after-hours program that explores how 19th-century fears around disease and misunderstood illnesses helped shape the vampire as we know it today.

Museum educator Jo D'Avella will guide guests through a discussion on the overlap between early medicine and vampire mythology, shedding light on the people and ideas that influenced their literary evolution. The event promises to be an engaging exploration of how medical conditions and misinterpretations contributed to some of the most recognizable traits associated with vampires.

To complement this discussion, the Mütter Museum is partnering with Pennsylvania Bat Rescue to separate bat facts from bat myths. Representatives from the organization will address the role bats play in human health and ecosystems, dispelling centuries-old misconceptions about these animals.

The event coincides with the launch of the museum's seasonal pop-up exhibit, "Vampirism," which will be on view select weekends from February 7 through May 31. While tickets for the Meet and Geek are $20, this unique event promises to offer a fresh perspective on one of horror's most enduring legends.

The Mütter Museum, located at 19 S 22nd St in Philadelphia, PA 19103, invites attendees to join them on this dark and fascinating journey into the world of vampirism.

OMG 🤯 I'm so down for a vampire-themed event! The Mütter Museum is literally the coolest place to explore the weird and wacky side of history. The idea that 19th-century fears around disease and misunderstood illnesses helped shape the modern concept of vampires is SO fascinating! 💉 It's like, who knew that medical conditions could be so... bloody? 😂 I'm definitely going to check out the pop-up exhibit "Vampirism" when it opens - a seasonal display sounds like an amazing way to geek out on all things undead. 🎃

Omg u gotta check out this event at the Mütter Museum! They're doing a "Meet and Geek" thing where they'll be talking about how medical conditions influenced vampire mythology 🧛‍♀️💉 It's actually kinda mind-blowing, like how some of those old superstitions started. And get this, they're partnering with a bat rescue org to set the record straight on these animals 🦇🌟 I mean, who knew bats were so cool? Anyway, if ur into history and horror, this event is def worth a visit for $20 👍

I'm not sure why people get so worked up about vampires 🧛‍♀️... I mean, they're just a product of our collective fears and misunderstanding of diseases back in the day. Like, think about it - the whole vampire mythology started because doctors didn't know what was causing all these weird illnesses that seemed like a bloodsucking curse 💉. It's crazy how something as ridiculous as a bloodthirsty creature can become so deeply ingrained in our pop culture.

And don't even get me started on how overhyped this whole ' Bat Myths vs Facts' thing is 🦇... I mean, come on, bats are just trying to make a living and help us out by pollinating plants and eating mosquitoes. Can we please give them some respect? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, if you're into that sorta thing, the Meet and Geek event sounds like it might be kinda cool 💸... but I'll probably be over here, watching vampire movies with a healthy dose of skepticism 😏

🤔 the vampire mythos is still super creepy lol i mean, who needs vampires when you got real-life diseases that can make you feel like a bloodsucking creature? TBH, the Mütter Museum's event sounds like it's gonna be pretty interesting... gotta love how they're pairing vampire history with bat facts 🦇💉

I'm low-key obsessed with this new exhibit 🧛‍♀️ at the Mütter Museum! It's wild to think that our modern vampire lore was actually inspired by fear of diseases like rabies 🤢. I love how they're pairing it with a bat-themed event - did you know bats are total unsung heroes when it comes to human health? They help us fight off fungal infections and other illnesses, so it's time to give them the respect they deserve 🦇💚

omg i'm so down for this event!!! 🤩 i've always been fascinated by vampires & how they came to be in pop culture... like who knew that diseases like rabies were used as inspiration for vampiric mythology? 🧠♂️ it's crazy to think about how medical conditions can shape our perceptions of creatures that are, like, super supernatural 😲 the partnership with Pennsylvania Bat Rescue sounds genius - i'm all about separating fact from fiction 💡 & learning more about these amazing animals! 🦇
