Sean Payton’s biggest regret from Broncos’ playoff heartbreak

Sean Payton's biggest regret from the Broncos' heartbreaking playoff loss to the Patriots may be a call he made early in the game that could have changed its course. On Sunday, the Broncos fell short of making it to the Super Bowl after a nail-biting 10-7 defeat at the hands of New England.

According to Payton, his biggest regret stems from a fourth-and-one play call on the Patriots' 14-yard line in the first half. The call was for a rollout pass by backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, but it was promptly blown up by the Patriots' defense, resulting in an incomplete pass and a turnover on downs.

Payton admitted that he's more upset about the play call than the decision itself. He cited using a timeout as a factor in his regret, suggesting that perhaps taking out a few seconds to reassess might have altered the outcome of the game.

The Broncos' offense was almost nonexistent for much of the second half, with quarterback Bo Nix - who is far more mobile than Stidham - being sorely missed. The team managed just 41 yards of total offense, and that lackluster performance ultimately led to their downfall.

A key play in the fourth quarter came when the Patriots capitalized on a backwards pass by Stidham, setting them up deep in Broncos territory and leading to a game-tying touchdown. The Patriots then drove down the field for the go-ahead field goal at the start of the third quarter.

The final nail in the coffin came with a game-sealing interception by Stidham, which sealed the deal for New England as they headed to Super Bowl 2026 against the Seahawks on February 8th.

I was saying this earlier... what's up with Sean Payton and his play-calling skills? 🤔 I mean, a rollout pass on 4th-and-1? Come on! You'd think he'd be more aggressive or at least consider a different angle. He's always going on about being "patient" and waiting for the right moment, but sometimes you just gotta take a shot and see what happens 🤷‍♂️.

And don't even get me started on that backwards pass by Stidham... talk about turning it over 💀. I was saying earlier that Payton needs to be more prepared for those kinds of situations, but it looks like he still has some growing up to do 🙃.

I also think the Broncos' O-line really struggled today 😩. They were getting sacked way too much and couldn't even block well enough to give Bo Nix some time to make a play. Maybe they should've gone with a different QB or at least made some adjustments during the game 🤔.

OMG, I'm still reeling from that heartbreaking loss 🤕! Sean Payton's gotta be killing himself over that fourth-and-one call 😩. Like, what was he thinking? Taking out a timeout would've been a total game-changer 💡. And can we talk about Bo Nix not being even on the field for most of the second half?! 🤦‍♂️ The Broncos' offense just didn't have any punch, and it's clear they're gonna miss their mobile QB. On the bright side, Stidham did make some crazy plays, but I'm still salty about that game 📚💔.

I'm telling ya, that play call was a total brain fart 🤦‍♂️! I mean, come on, fourth-and-one on the 14-yard line? That's like asking your grandma if you wanna take a nap 😴. You gotta go for it and try to convert that opportunity. A timeout would've been better than just throwing it away like that. And what's with Bo Nix not being in there? Dude's got wheels, he could've made some magic happen ⚡️! But no, Payton stuck with Stidham and... well, you know how that turned out 🤷‍♂️. The Broncos had some good moments, but they just couldn't capitalize on their chances. Sorry, Broncos fans, I feel for ya 😔.

I'm still reeling from that crazy playoff loss 🤯. I mean, come on Sean Payton, you're one of the best coaches in the league and you get blown up by a fourth-and-one play call? It's gotta be tough to swallow 😬. The rollout pass thing doesn't make sense to me, like what was he thinking? And yeah, taking out that timeout would've definitely changed the game 🕰️.

The Broncos' offense just wasn't getting anything done, it was like Bo Nix wasn't even on the field 💔. They need to work on their play calling and get their quarterback in sync or they're gonna be stuck in neutral forever ⚡️.

omg I'm still reeling from that Broncos loss 😱🏈 I think Sean Payton's biggest regret is totally fair, though - calling a rollout pass by Jarrett Stidham on that fourth-and-one play was pure guts... or maybe not so much 💁‍♂️. The fact that they didn't take a timeout to reassess could've changed the course of the game for sure! 🤯 That offense just wasn't getting anything going in the second half, and Bo Nix's absence was really felt 🌪️.

And wow, that backwards pass by Stidham is just... ugh 😩. You can tell they were trying to pull off some kinda trick play, but it backfired big time 💥. The final interception sealed their fate for sure 👎. Still, you gotta give Payton credit for making the tough call in the first place - not an easy decision by any means 🤔

Ugh I'm still salty about that Broncos loss 😩🏈! They just couldn't get anything going on offense and it was like Bo Nix wasn't even there 🤔. That rollout pass call by Payton is a total head-scratcher, I mean who tries to go for it on 4th and 1 with backup QB? And then Stidham just had a weird game, all those backwards passes... what's up with that? 🤷‍♂️ The Patriots played solid D but you gotta think Payton could've done more with his play-calling. Maybe take out a timeout to regroup and come back strong? Idk, hindsight is 20/20, but it was definitely a crucial call 🔄. Anyway, congrats to the Pats on making it to Super Bowl 2026! 😎

I'm so gutted for Sean Payton and the Broncos team 🤕. I mean, that fourth-and-one call was a tough one to swallow, but it's hard not to wonder what would've happened if they'd taken out some extra time to think about it. The whole game felt like they were stuck in neutral, with Bo Nix just being too good to replace 😐. And that backwards pass by Stidham? What was he even thinking?! 🤯 I don't know how you can look back on a play and say 'oh, that's my biggest regret'. Was it the call itself or just the fact they didn't take some extra time to reassess? It's like, what would've changed if they'd just held up for a sec? 💭

I'm gonna give it to Payton, but he's gotta own up to that play call 🤔. Using a timeout would've given him an out, you know? Maybe he was trying to make a bold move, but in hindsight, it just didn't work out 😐. That rollout pass by Stidham got picked apart by the Patriots' D, and it's hard to blame Payton for wanting to go back on that one 🙅‍♂️. The Broncos' offense was basically a ghost town after halftime – Bo Nix is where it's at, fam! 💪 Anyway, congrats to the Patriots on making it to Super Bowl 2026 👏, but I'm still salty about that play call 😒

I'm still trying to process what went down in that game 🤔. I mean, you gotta feel for Sean Payton and the Broncos - they were so close to making it to the Super Bowl! 😬 But at the same time, that fourth-and-one play call was a total head-scratcher... like, who calls a rollout pass on 4th down in your own territory? 🤦‍♂️ And yeah, using up a timeout before calling it might've made a difference. You can imagine how their offense would've looked with Bo Nix under center instead of Stidham 😩.

It's also crazy how that backwards pass from Stidham almost came back to haunt him... like, what was he even thinking? 🤯 And that interception at the end just sealed the deal for the Patriots. It's a tough pill to swallow, but you gotta respect their team effort and strategy 💪. Still got to wonder what could've been if Payton made that call differently 🤔

Ugh I'm still reeling from that heartbreaking loss 😩🏈. As a parent watching that game, it was like watching my kid get knocked down and not being able to do anything about it 🤕. Sean Payton's call with only 2 minutes left in the half was soooo critical - what if he'd taken a timeout to regroup? 🙄 might've changed everything.

And poor Bo Nix, the mobile QB we needed more of, was basically MIA for most of the second half 😔. I'm not sure what's going on with that play call, but it looked super hinky... like they didn't have a plan B or C at all 🤯. The Pats defense just played so smart and took advantage of the Broncos' lack of execution 💪.

Anyway, congrats to the Patriots on making it to Super Bowl 2026 - not taking anything away from them 😊. But man, that was a tough one to watch 👀
