Stormzy calls reading a 'superpower' as he backs accessible books campaign

Stormzy has hailed reading as a "superpower" as he lends his support to an initiative aimed at encouraging people who don't consider themselves readers to pick up a book. The musician's publishing imprint #Merky Books is behind one of this year's six Quick Reads titles, which are specifically designed for non-readers, those with short attention spans, and neurodivergent individuals.

The title, Hunger Pains by Derek Owusu, will be available for Β£1 in April as part of a broader effort to make reading more accessible. Owusu himself never started reading until the age of 24, and he wishes that he had been introduced to Quick Reads sooner.

Stormzy expressed his pride in seeing Owusu's work being used to reach those who need it most. "His words will carry the message to people who don't usually read," the rapper said. "I encourage anyone who doesn't usually read to pick up a Quick Read – because reading really is a superpower."

The musician drew parallels between music and books, stating that both are about finding one's voice and telling stories that define us as individuals. The six Quick Reads titles this year have undergone a rigorous accessibility review process, ensuring they meet the needs of readers with varying levels of attention spans and reading abilities.

For the first time ever, the initiative will also be offering audiobooks, alongside distributing half a million Quick Reads books to prisons across the UK. The #Merky Books imprint is committed to providing accessible content that can help people rebuild their reading confidence.

Stormzy's backing for this campaign highlights his own appreciation for reading, which has played a significant role in his life and career. With Hunger Pains and other titles going on sale later this year, it seems that the musician is dedicated to helping more people discover the power of reading.

omg i'm so down for this!!! πŸ’–πŸ“š stormzy is literally the coolest for supporting this initiative πŸ™Œ it's so cool that he's backing an author who didn't start reading till age 24, i feel like i've found my new fave read already! 🀩 and audiobooks?! yeah pls let me get my hands on those too 🎧 can't wait to dive into Hunger Pains and see all the other quick reads out there πŸ“šπŸ‘

πŸ“šπŸ‘ Reading should be for everyone, not just the bookworms πŸ€“. It's about finding your voice and sharing your story, like music does for Stormzy. I'm loving the idea of Quick Reads making books accessible for all, especially those with short attention spans or neurodivergent individuals πŸŒˆπŸ’‘. Who says you can't start reading at 24? 😊

I'm not sure why anyone would think reading is a "superpower"... like it's some kind of exclusive club or something πŸ€”. And what's with these Quick Reads titles? They're just dumbing down books for people who can't handle real literature, if you ask me. I mean, they're designed for neurodivergent individuals and those with short attention spans... sounds like a cop-out to me πŸ˜’.

And Stormzy thinks he's being all noble by supporting this initiative? Please, he's just trying to boost his own image as some kind of "reading champion" πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And what's the real goal here? To get more people hooked on reading so they can sell more books? It's just a marketing ploy if you ask me... πŸ“šπŸ’Έ

I'm so done with how they're making Quick Reads available only Β£1. I get what they're trying to do, but come on! That's not exactly "making reading more accessible" if you ask me πŸ˜’. What about all those who can't even afford that? It's like they're saying, "Hey, we'll give you a taste of reading, but you have to pay full price for the rest." It should be free or at least on a sliding scale. I mean, I'm all for supporting the initiative, but let's not make it a privilege for those who can already afford books πŸ“šπŸ’Έ

You gotta love Stormzy's vibes 🀩, he's always been about spreading knowledge and positivity through his music & books. This whole Quick Reads thing is genius, I mean who doesn't need a little push to get into reading? 😊 And with Hunger Pains being Β£1, it's like, how can you say no? πŸ€‘ It's all about making reading accessible to everyone, regardless of background or ability. The fact that they're also offering audiobooks is a game-changer for people who need a more relaxed way of consuming stories. I'm definitely looking forward to checking out some of these titles myself! πŸ‘

omg i'm so down for stormzy's initiative lol i mean who wouldn't wanna call reading a "superpower" 🀩 especially since owusu never started reading till he was 24 and now he's got a book out - that's like, super inspiring 😊 besides, it's all about finding your voice and telling stories that define you as an individual, which is totes music to my ears 🎢 i love how #merky books is making reading more accessible too, especially with the audiobooks - that's a game changer for ppl who need it πŸ’‘

πŸ€“πŸ“š Stormzy's right, reading is defo a superpower 🀯! I remember when I was in school, we had to read all these classics and think they were boring 😴... but then I discovered my first graphic novel and it changed everything πŸ“Ί. Now I devour books like they're candy 🍰. The idea that Hunger Pains is going to be available for Β£1 is a great move, more people should be able to access the power of reading πŸ’‘! Audiobooks are a great addition too, so everyone can get in on the action 🎧. Stormzy's passion for reading is inspiring and I'm loving the fact that #Merky Books is behind this initiative πŸ’–.

aww man this is so heartwarming πŸ€— Stormzy's passion for reading is infectious! I can totally relate to how reading can be a game changer for someone... like me when i finally found my tribe in online communities 🌐. Its amazing that #Merky Books is doing such great work to make reading accessible to everyone, especially those who feel left behind 🀝. Hunger Pains sounds like an incredible book and I love how Stormzy's backing it means so much to the author, Derek Owusu πŸ’•. Let's keep spreading the word about the power of reading and how it can change lives! πŸ’ͺ

😊 you know what struck me about stormzy's comments? he's right when he says reading is a superpower! i mean think about it - books can transport us to new worlds, introduce us to different perspectives, and help us grow as individuals. but it seems like so many people are missing out on that. πŸ€” maybe we should all take stormzy's advice and give ourselves permission to pick up a book, even if it's not something we've always enjoyed.

the thing is, reading isn't just about getting lost in a good story - it's also about learning new things, challenging our assumptions, and expanding our empathy. πŸ“šπŸ‘₯ so yeah, i think stormzy's right on the money when he says reading can be life-changing. let's all try to spread the love of reading, especially to those who might need it most πŸ’•

I gotta say, I love Stormzy's enthusiasm for getting people into reading πŸ“šπŸ’ͺ But, like, have you thought about how expensive Β£1 books can be for those who are struggling financially? I get the idea that it's meant to encourage people who don't read much, but what about those who really need a book but just can't afford it? Maybe they could offer more affordable options or partner with local libraries to make it easier for people to access these Quick Reads πŸ€”

I'm loving the whole #Merky Books thing, Stormzy's support for this initiative is so inspiring. I mean, who knew Quick Reads could be a "superpower"? As someone who's struggled with reading in school (had some pretty tough tutors), it's amazing to see that these books are being designed specifically for people like me. The fact that they're making audiobooks available too is genius! Prisons getting half a million books? That's massive, I'm all about reading rehabilitating people πŸ“šπŸ’ͺ

πŸ€• so its just another example of how we're getting older and slowly losing our ability to read πŸ“– anyone can learn but I guess some people need a push in the right direction like that Hunger Pains seems alright i suppose but Β£1 is a bit steep dont get me wrong ill still buy it tho half a million books for prisons is a good idea though thats where most ppl really need it

😊 Stormzy's right! Reading really is a superpower 🀯 - I mean have you seen the stats? πŸ“Š In 2022 alone, the UK spent Β£1.8 billion on books and audiobooks, with 11 million people aged 16-24 reading for more than 6 hours a week πŸ“š That's like, a lot of pages turned! πŸ€“

But let's get to the numbers, shall we? πŸ“Š According to a study by the Literacy Trust, 25% of adults in the UK have never read for pleasure since childhood πŸ“– And that's like, a whole nation missing out on some amazing stories πŸ“š

Anywayz, back to Quick Reads. Did you know they've been around since 2006 and have already helped over 1 million people get back into reading? 🀩 They're making books for non-readers, neurodivergent folks, and anyone with short attention spans. It's like, totally accessible, innit? 😊

And let's talk about audiobooks 🎧 - Stormzy's on the right track with that one. In 2022, audiobook sales grew by 24% in the UK, with over Β£300 million spent on them πŸ’Έ That's some serious listening power! πŸ”Š

omg i feel so bad for people who never got into reading till now lol like stormzy's right it really is a superpower 🀯 i remember in school we had these "quick reads" books too, but i think they were way harder to get than these new ones πŸ“š at least with hunger pains, it's Β£1 which is so affordable πŸ€‘ i wish more authors would write for people like owusu who didn't start reading till 24 πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ anyway i'm def gonna check out hunger pains and the rest of the quick reads now πŸ’‘

im so down with stormzy's initiative 🀩, reading should be for everyone, regardless of how much you think you can handle or not πŸ“šπŸ’‘. its all about finding your voice and expression, just like music does for him 🎢. i think its awesome that #merky books is making these quick reads available, especially the audiobooks πŸ“» - more options means more people can engage with reading in a way that works for them πŸ’•. lets keep encouraging everyone to pick up a book and see where it takes them πŸ“šπŸ’«
