Texas's Chances of Landing No. 1 Running Back Isaac Brown Slip Away After He Declines Portal Exit
The University of Texas was seemingly on the cusp of landing top-ranked running back Isaac Brown following his decision to enter the transfer portal from Louisville. However, a last-minute change of heart saw Brown opting to stay with his current program, dashing Texas's hopes of luring him to Austin.
According to reports, 247Sports had predicted that Brown would ultimately join the Longhorns, and On3's Pete Nakos claimed that Texas was the team that beat out all others for Brown's signature. With quarterback Arch Manning in need of a new backfield partner, many saw this as an opportunity for the Longhorns to bolster their offense.
Instead, Brown announced his decision to remain with Louisville, where he won multiple awards as a true freshman in 2024, including ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. Despite battling injuries that limited him to just eight games last season, Brown still finished strong, finishing third-team All-ACC after rushing for 782 yards and five touchdowns.
The loss leaves Texas scrambling to find an alternative backfield partner, with names such as Hollywood Smothers from NC State, Cam Cook from Jacksonville State, or Jadan Baugh from Florida being considered. While there is currently no clarity on whether Baugh will enter the portal, any move he does make could be costly for the Longhorns.
In addition to finding a new running back, Texas is also looking to upgrade its receiving corps and tackle room with potential recruits set to join the team in what should be Arch Manning's final year at the helm.
