Northampton Saints staged an incredible comeback to come out on top in a 29-43 thriller against Sale Sharks. The Saints, who had been trailing by seven points with just over a quarter of the game left to play, scored three tries in a row to take the lead and ultimately claim a hard-fought victory.
Tommy Freeman and Rory Hutchinson gave Northampton an early lead before Robbie Smith, Edoardo Todaro, Josh Kemeny, Alex Coles, and Henry Pollock all crossed for second-half tries. The Sharks, however, refused to give up, with Raffi Quirke, Joe Carpenter, Tom O'Flaherty scoring four tries of their own in a stunning comeback that left the Northampton team 29-26 ahead with just over ten minutes remaining.
But Northampton's late burst of three tries proved decisive. First, Callum Chick broke through before being held up by Sale defenders, only for Alex Kemeny to pounce on the loose ball and score in the corner. Then, a brilliant counter-attack involving Mitchell and George Furbank was finished off by Italy teenager Todaro, who had scored his seventh Prem try of the season.
The Saints' lead was further extended when Rob du Preez's kick was on the money for O'Flaherty to score again, before Kemeny rounded off a thrilling game with a try in the corner. The final scoreline read 43-29 in favor of Northampton Saints.
The victory marked a significant boost for the top-ranked team, who sit two points clear at the top of the table after eighth win from ten Prem games. For Sale Sharks, however, it was a demoralizing defeat that left their hopes of a fourth consecutive top-four spot all but over.
