Setapp Mobile, the alternative iOS app store, is set to shut down on February 16th, leaving users without access to their apps. The move comes after the developer, MacPaw, determined that it was no longer viable to continue development and support for Setapp Mobile within its current business model.
The platform, which was launched in response to the EU's Digital Markets Act, aimed to provide an alternative app ecosystem for iOS users. However, despite its promise, the service failed to gain traction with users, who ultimately preferred to stick with Apple's official App Store.
According to MacPaw CEO Oleksandr Kosovan, Setapp Mobile was a "bold, breakthrough project" that aimed to create a new app marketplace where developers and users could thrive. However, the company concluded that it was not viable to continue development due to evolving commercial conditions.
As a result, all Setapp Mobile apps will be removed from the platform on February 16th, and users are advised to transfer their data in advance. The shutdown marks the end of an alternative app store that aimed to challenge Apple's dominance in the iOS app market.
While Setapp Mobile is coming to an end, MacPaw is looking forward to pursuing other innovations, including a new AI assistant native to macOS called Eney and enhancements to its existing Setapp Desktop service. The company expressed disappointment at having to discontinue the platform but remains committed to exploring new opportunities in the future.
