Sydney Harbour Bridge Invasion Sparks Fines and Regret for Social Media Star Sur Ronster
A swarm of ebike riders on Sydney Harbour Bridge has led to a hefty fine for American social media personality Sur Ronster. The incident, which occurred in peak-hour traffic, saw about 40 people riding ebikes and motorcycles along the bridge's main deck, where cycling is strictly prohibited.
The group's reckless ride was described as "incredibly irresponsible" by NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver, who warned that it posed a significant risk to people's lives. After locating the riders at Mrs Macquarie's Chair near Sydney's Botanic Gardens, they dispersed without incident.
Sur Ronster, 26, has been fined $562 and issued three demerit points for negligent driving. The social media influencer, who boasts over 3.4 million followers on his platform, expressed regret for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.
"I'll probably take responsibility," he said in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. "I'm coming here as a guest, so I'm going to come here respecting the rules and standards of Sydney."
The incident has reignited calls for regulation of ebikes on public roads. Federal health minister Mark Butler described illegal ebikes as a "total menace" that poses devastating injuries to road users.
As NSW records rise in ebike-related injuries โ from 226 in 2024 to 237 in the first seven months of this year, with four fatalities โ authorities are pushing for stricter laws to curb the proliferation of these vehicles on public roads.
