“We Are Going to Run the Country”: Trump Boasts of Regime Change in Venezuela

President Donald Trump has made a dramatic claim that the US had spirited Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro out of the country and taken him into custody, marking a major escalation in the Trump administration's efforts to regime change in Venezuela.

Trump claimed credit for airstrikes that lit up the night sky across Caracas on Saturday, saying they were an "assault like people have not seen since World War II." The US has not made such a direct intervention in Latin America since 1989.

Hours after the airstrikes, Trump said the US would likely not need to carry out a second attack now that Maduro was in U.S. custody, but warned that it would be ready to do so if necessary. He also criticized Venezuela's oil industry, suggesting it should be more productive.

The US has been involved in regime change efforts in Latin America numerous times since 1898, including 17 direct military interventions, according to ReVista, the Harvard Review of Latin America. Critics argue that Trump's actions are an extension of long-running efforts to topple Maduro, which failed during his first term.

Maduro and his wife are currently being held on the USS Iwo Jima, a US warship deployed to the Caribbean, a defense official told The Intercept. They are being transported to New York to face charges.

The White House did not respond to questions about its potential role in installing new leadership in Venezuela. Maduro was indicted by the Southern District of New York alongside his wife, Cilia Flores, who had not previously been charged.

Venezuela's right-wing opposition leader María Corina Machado celebrated Maduro's capture, urging for the immediate installation of Edmundo González Urrutia, Maduro's main competitor in the last Venezuelan presidential election.

OMG, can you even believe what's happening?! 🤯 Trump is being super aggressive with Venezuela and it's like a whole other level of crazy! I mean, airstrikes since World War II? That's just insane! 😱 And now he's saying Maduro is in US custody? Like, where did this even come from?! 🤔

But you know what's even crazier? The fact that the US has been doing this kind of thing for like, ever... 1898 or something. It's so messed up. Can't we just try to help each other instead of trying to control each other? 🙄 Like, I get that Maduro might be a bit shady, but does he really deserve all this?! 😩

Anyway, my main point is, let's keep an eye on what happens next, 'kay? This situation can easily go from bad to worse. But hey, at least Maduro and his wife are being held accountable for something... I guess? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I don't get why they gotta be so dramatic about this whole thing... like, yeah, airstrikes are intense, but what's the point? Is it really worth putting lives at risk just to take down one guy? 🤕 And now Maduro's husband is being charged too?! That's just getting messy. It feels like they're setting up some new puppet leader instead of actually solving the problems in Venezuela... 💸 Can't we just talk about this stuff in a civilized way and try to find a peaceful solution? 😒

omg this is getting crazy 🤯! Trump is literally claiming he took out Maduro like it's a reality show 💥 and now they're saying he's being held on a US warship 🚢? I need more info before I believe it 🤔. I mean, I'm no expert, but 17 direct military interventions since 1898 seems like a lot 😱. And what about Maduro's alleged crimes? Shouldn't we get the full story before we start cheering or condemning? 🙄. This whole thing is just too sudden and suspicious for my taste 🤔. I'm keeping an eye on this one... 👀

Oh man, this is insane 🤯! I mean, I knew Trump was a wild card, but this is crazy talk 💥! Taking Maduro into custody on his own warship? That's just not how diplomacy works 👊. And what about the implications for Venezuela's sovereignty? It's like they're basically saying "we're gonna install our guy and you can deal with it" 🤔. I'm all for regime change, but this feels way too aggressive 🔥. Can't we try to negotiate a peaceful transition instead of resorting to military intervention? 😩 And what about the international fallout? This is gonna be huge 🌎. Trump's just going to fuel more instability and chaos in a region that already has enough problems 🤕. Not sure what to make of this, but one thing's for sure: it's gonna be a long and messy ride 💸

So they're saying Trump just casually kidnapped Nicolás Maduro and took him on a warship... that's wild 🤯 I mean, come on, didn't we learn from our past interventions in Latin America? It looks like this is more of the same old regime change stuff. And now they're talking about installing Edmundo González Urrutia as a replacement? Like, what even is the plan here?

I'm guessing Trump's whole "assault like World War II" thing was just some attempt to justify his actions. Newsflash: airstrikes don't work that way. They cause chaos and destruction, but they're not a solution to political problems. And Maduro's wife being indicted in NY? That's just basic human rights stuff.

I'm all for holding people accountable, but this feels like more of the same old US foreign policy. We need to rethink our approach to Latin America, you know? Can't we just let Venezuela sort itself out for once? 😒

I don't usually comment but... I'm kinda shocked by this whole thing 🤯. I mean, Trump just goes and makes these crazy claims without even confirming with his own people first? It's like he thinks he can just dictate reality to the world 🌎. And what's up with Maduro being taken into custody in the first place? Wasn't there already an investigation going on? It feels like a whole lot of drama unfolding here, and I'm not sure if anyone's really prepared for how this all plays out 💥.

idk about this dude trump... what is he even doing now lol 🤣🚀. like seriously though, regime change in venezuela? that's crazy talk 😲. i mean we all know the US has been involved in stuff like this before but to just come out and say it? that's some wild stuff 🌪️. Maduro's wife is being held on a us warship? what even is that? 😂🚣‍♀️. and now trump is saying they might not need another airstrike if maduro is in custody? that's like saying "hey, we're not gonna hurt you because we already kidnapped your husband" 🤷‍♂️. just doesn't add up, fam 🤔.
