. And meanwhile, Flamengo seems like they're being pretty ruthless in their pursuit of him - €40m is a lot, but it's not like West Ham would get that kind of money for someone else

I mean, €40m is a LOT of cash and if Flamengo is willing to shell that much out, it's gotta be tempting for West Ham to sell him right now. But at the same time, I get why they want to keep him - he's an absolute beast on the pitch! 
Like, imagine West Ham without Paquetá and their chances of staying in the league just plummeting down the drain... 
It's a nightmare scenario for them. But if they can find a way to get some stability back, maybe even get him to commit to another year, I think that'd be a huge boost for the team.
