Wikimedia announces AI partners including Meta and Microsoft

Wikimedia, the parent company of Wikipedia, has announced a slew of partnerships with leading AI-focused companies to alleviate the costs associated with large-scale usage of its content by these tech giants. The deals include Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and others, providing them with streamlined access to high-throughput APIs that can fuel chatbot systems.

According to Wikimedia's president, Lane Becker, the organization had been working on establishing an enterprise platform to help reduce costs for large firms like Google and Facebook. However, it took some time to understand which features and functionalities were required to make these companies commit to sustaining Wikipedia's work. The partnerships aim to strike a balance between providing AI-driven services that rely heavily on Wikipedia content while also ensuring the financial sustainability of the non-profit organization.

The deal allows participating companies to access vast amounts of content from Wikipedia, as well as other Wikimedia projects such as Wikivoyage, Wikibooks, and Wikiquote. By offering these high-throughput APIs, the tech giants can efficiently integrate Wikipedia's content into their AI chatbot systems, without having to rely on scraping or manual curation.

The move comes amid concerns raised by Wikimedia last year that the increasing use of large language models (LLMs) and AI summaries could pose an existential threat to the organization. With 65 million free articles under its roof, Wikipedia has served as a rich training dataset for many AI chatbots, but the resulting increased server costs have weighed heavily on the non-profit.

By formalizing these partnerships with leading tech companies, Wikimedia is taking steps towards reducing its reliance on public funding and ensuring its continued relevance in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.

I just got back from the most random vacation to this tiny town in Japan that served the best tonkatsu ever ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‘€ anyway, what's with these AI-powered chatbots taking over everything? I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cool and all, but can't we have a conversation without a robot doing our talking for us? and oh man, 65 million articles on Wikipedia is crazy! that's like, a whole library of knowledge right there ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ป

omg I'm glad wikimedia is doin somethin about this whole AI thing ๐Ÿคฏ they're not just gonna let their content get used without payin some kinda attention, right? it's all about findin that balance between tech giants and non-profits ๐Ÿค‘ so, hopefully these deals help wikipedia stay afloat while also keepin the AI chatbots happy ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿคฉ I'm so stoked about this news! Wikipedia's willingness to collaborate with major AI companies like Amazon and Meta means they can finally cut the cord with some of that heavy server maintenance ๐Ÿ’ธ... it's been a struggle for them, you know? With all these big tech giants using Wikipedia as their go-to source for content, it's crazy to think about how much pressure that puts on the non-profit ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, 65 million articles is insane! The fact that they're finding ways to make this work with partnerships instead of relying solely on donations or ad revenue is just amazing ๐Ÿ’–... it's proof that with a little creativity and cooperation, even the biggest challenges can be overcome ๐Ÿ˜Š.

OMG u guys ๐Ÿคฏ i cant even believe wikipedia is partnerin with amazon & meta & microsoft etc lol like theyre basically gettin paid to keep wikipedia content alive ๐Ÿ’ธ i feel like this is a major game changer for them cuz now they can focus on other stuff instead of just tryna make ends meet ๐Ÿค‘ the fact that they got 65 million free articles tho is just mind blowin ๐Ÿ˜ฒ it makes sense tho that tech giants wanna use wikipedia's content in their ai chatbots tho i mean who doesnt love wikipedia lol ๐Ÿค“ its gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out and if wikipedia stays financially stable ๐Ÿค‘

OMG, can you believe it? Wikipedia's basically selling out ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ’ธ, but like, for a good reason I guess? They need to diversify their income streams, 'cause those AI giants are sucking up all the resources ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿค–. It's not like they're gonna poison our knowledge or anything ๐Ÿ˜‚. The fact that they're formalizing these partnerships and striking a balance between financial sustainability and keeping Wikipedia's work alive is actually kinda genius ๐Ÿค“. I mean, who wouldn't want to collaborate with companies like Amazon and Meta? ๐Ÿค At the end of the day, it's all about preserving our collective knowledge and making sure that Wikipedia can keep on truckin' ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ’ก. Let's just hope they don't lose that open-source spirit in the process ๐Ÿคž!

dunno if this is a good thing or not...I mean, one side of it is that it's gonna save wikipedia from breaking down under the weight of all these AI companies scraping their content, but at the same time, I'm worried they're selling out to the highest bidder ๐Ÿค‘. like, what's next? selling our personal data too? ๐Ÿค”

this is a big deal for wikipedia ๐Ÿค”... i mean, who doesn't love free info online ๐Ÿ˜Š but at the same time, it's scary to think about how ai is changing the game & wikipedia's future ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ป so yeah, it makes sense that wikipedia needs to adapt & partner with companies like amazon & meta to stay afloat ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ‘

just think about it ๐Ÿคฏ, wikipedia's been around for ages but now they're basically selling their content to the highest bidder ๐Ÿ˜‚. i mean, i get it, they need the cash to keep up with the servers and all that jazz ๐Ÿ’ธ. but at what cost? are we gonna lose the free access to info we've grown up with ๐Ÿค”? plus, i'm not sure i wanna see wikipedia's content being used in those chatbots... sounds like a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿšฎ.

๐Ÿค” this is kinda cool i guess. so wikipedia is basically saying "hey, we're gonna make it easier for big tech companies to use our content, but only if they help us out financially" ๐Ÿค‘ like a win-win situation, right? except i still dont fully get how this will work in practice... and what about all the free articles, wont that just get lost in the shuffle? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm not sure I love this deal ๐Ÿค”. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that Wikimedia is working with big companies to reduce costs, but I think we're giving away too much of our data for the sake of profit ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean, have you seen how much info those large language models are sucking up? It's like they're sponges ๐Ÿงป. We're basically saying it's okay to use our content to train these AI chatbots as long as we get a few bucks in return. What about the value of free knowledge, though? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
