YouTube Music starts limiting lyrics for free users

YouTube Music is cracking down on free users who rely on lyrics to complete their music experience. The platform has begun limiting the display of song lyrics for non-paying subscribers, forcing them to shell out $10.99 per month for a Premium subscription.

The change, which was initially tested with a limited group of users starting in September, now appears to be rolling out to all free users. The "Lyrics" tab on the Now Playing screen now displays a warning message stating that users have a certain number of views remaining and can unlock lyrics by upgrading to Premium.

After five songs are displayed, the rest of the lyrics become blurred, essentially stripping away one of the main features that made YouTube Music an attractive option for those who don't want to pay. While this change may not seem drastic on its own, it's a significant shift in how free users interact with the platform.

The move is believed to be aimed at recouping costs spent by Google with lyric aggregators like Musixmatch. In a similar move last year, Spotify put lyrics behind its Premium paywall but was forced to reinstate them after user backlash. It remains to be seen if YouTube will follow suit.

ugh i got no problem paying for premium on youtube music tbh πŸ€‘ the change is pretty annoying though, like i get it google needs to make some cash, but can't they just let us free users enjoy our fave songs w/o worrying about lyrics being all blurry? it's like they're trying to nickel & dime us πŸ˜’

ok so youtube music is basically ruining it for us free users now lol i mean i get it google needs to make some cash but $10.99 is like a lot of money!! and what's the point of paying extra for something that we can easily find on other platforms or websites anyway?! i'm not gonna start paying just because they're limiting our lyrics i'll just have to use another music streaming service instead

πŸ€” they're just gonna keep taking away more things from free users... first it's the ads, now it's the lyrics... what's next? πŸ€‘ $10.99 is a pretty steep price for something that used to be included in the free plan 😐 maybe they should just make YouTube Premium a cheaper option or make the free plan worth something too πŸ’Έ

πŸ€” I'm low-key disappointed in this move lol. I mean, who doesn't love singing along to their fave tunes? It's like they're trying to suck the fun out of watching music videos πŸ˜’. What's next? They'll be limiting the video quality for free users too? πŸ“ΊπŸ’Έ At least with Spotify, they went back on the lyrics thing after getting roasted by users. I hope YouTube doesn't follow suit or it's gonna be a lose-lose for them... or us poor lyric-lovers πŸ˜‚. Maybe they can find another way to make that money instead? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

OMG u guys! I'm totally bummed about this πŸ€•, like, what's the point of using YouTube Music if u can't even see the lyrics?! It's literally half the fun for me 😎. I get why they wanna recoup costs from lyric aggregators tho πŸ’Έ, but 10 bucks a month is just too steep for me πŸ€‘. I'm a heavy music listener & not everyone's gonna shell out that kinda cash πŸ’Έ. It's like, don't @ me πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ, I'll just find another way to access lyrics... maybe on another platform? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I'm kinda bummed about this change on YouTube Music, you know? As someone who loves discovering new music and just needs a lil' help with the lyrics 🎢, this new rule is gonna make it super frustrating for me and maybe even some other free users too 😐. I mean, $10.99 per month is no joke, especially if you're not into paying that much for premium stuff πŸ’Έ.

On the other hand, I get why YouTube Music needs to recoup costs, 'specially with all those lyric aggregators they gotta pay 🀝. But at the same time, this new rule feels like it's pushing users towards subscribing, and I'm worried some people might lose interest in the platform if they can't access lyrics easily πŸ“‰.

I guess we'll just have to see how this whole thing plays out and maybe YouTube Music will find a sweet spot between keeping costs low and giving free users what they need πŸ’¬.

I'm so done with this move 🀯! Like I get it, they wanna make some cash, but what's the point of even having YouTube Music if you can't see the lyrics? It's like they're trying to nickel and dime us out of a feature that's part of the whole music streaming experience. And $10.99? That's not cheap! They should be worried about losing subscribers who are gonna go elsewhere instead of shelling out more cash for something they already have. πŸ€‘ This is just another example of how the big players are squeezing every last penny from us, and I'm not having it πŸ˜’

omg u guys i just found out youtube music is doing this 🚨😱 so they're gonna charge us for the lyrics we want lol what's next? they gotta start charging us for likes and views too πŸ˜‚πŸ‘€ but seriously its a bummer cuz i was really into using youtube music for like my daily commute or whatever and now im forced to pay just to get the lyrics idk about these guys tho maybe its time for me to switch to spotify or apple music πŸ€”πŸ’Έ

Ugh what's going on here!!! 🀯 I mean come on YouTube you're basically saying that we gotta shell out 11 bucks a month just so we can see the lyrics πŸ˜’ Like wth is wrong with giving us some free views or somethin'?! The whole point of using your app in the first place was to listen to the songs and get the lyrics right?! Now it's like you're tryin' to nickel and dime people who are just chillin πŸ€‘. And don't even get me started on how annoying it is when they blur the rest of the lyrics after 5 views πŸ“šπŸ˜‘ I swear this is a way for them to make more cash off us, not like we didn't already pay to use the app in the first place πŸ€‘. Can someone pls do somethin' about this?!

Ugh, great, just what I needed, another reason to cancel my YouTube Music subscription πŸ˜’. So now they're forcing me to pay $10.99 a month just to see the lyrics... like, what's next? Paying extra for ads? πŸ“Ί They're basically taking away one of the main features that made them an attractive option in the first place. I get it, Google wants to recoup costs on those lyric aggregators, but couldn't they've come up with a more user-friendly solution? Like, maybe just offer a cheaper ad-free plan or something? πŸ€‘ This move is all about nickel and diming their users at this point... and I'm not exactly thrilled about it 😐.

πŸ˜’ another one of these annoying updates from YouTube Music... can't believe they're doing this πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. So now we have to fork out extra cash just to see the bloody lyrics 😑. I mean, what's the harm in showing them anyway? It's not like it's costing anyone a fortune. And 5 songs is a pretty low threshold for taking away our precious lyrics... feels like they're just trying to squeeze more $$$ from us πŸ€‘. Spotify got roasted last year for doing something similar and now YouTube's following suit πŸ‘€. Guess we'll just have to shell out that extra $10.99 if we wanna enjoy our tunes without the "Lyrics" tab πŸ˜”. Not happy about this one πŸ’”

omg youtubemusic is literally ruining my experience 😩 i know they gotta make some cash but limiting lyrics on free users is a big no from me πŸ‘Ž its like they wanna take away what made youtube music so awesome in the first place πŸ€” if i want to see lyrics now i have to pay $10.99/month πŸ€‘ thats way too much money for me 😩 i'm sticking with my current playlist and just using the song titles lol πŸ‘€

umm so like youtube music is changing its free version thingy and now they're not showing song lyrics anymore πŸ€” thats kinda weird i mean whats the point of using a service if you can't even see the words lol also why are they doing this again? didnt they already try that with spotify last year and it didn't go so well πŸ˜• anyway im still gonna use youtube music but maybe ill just listen to the songs for like 5 seconds before its too blurry 🎡
