However, its preliminary heats managed to produce a significant splash with American swimmer Kate Douglass setting a new world record in the women's 50 meter freestyle at an impressive 23. 49 seconds.
This achievement is remarkable considering it comes on the heels of her teammate Gretchen Walsh's previous record, which itself was a reaction to Douglass' initial lowering of the mark just days earlier.
