Taiwan Proposes Record US$35b Defense Budget for 2027 as PLA's Pressure Grows The Taiwanese government has proposed a record defense budget of NT$1 trillion (approximately US$35 billion) for 2027, a significant increase from this year's allocation and the highest ever recorded in the country.
This massive jump in spending is largely driven by the need to acquire more advanced US made military equipment, a move that comes at a time when tensions with China are running high.
The proposed budget hike reflects Taiwan's long term strategy to boost its defense capabilities and achieve a goal set by President William Lai Ching te: raising overall defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product by 2030.
