2026 Winter Olympics: Italy foils 'Russian cyber-attacks' at Milan-Cortina Games

Italy has successfully thwarted a series of cyber-attacks targeting the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, according to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The attacks were reportedly of "Russian origin" and targeted websites linked to the Games, hotels in Cortina d'Ampezzo, and foreign ministry facilities, including an embassy in Washington.

The host town of Cortina d'Ampezzo will be staging a range of events during the Olympics, including alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, and sliding competitions. The games are set to officially begin on Friday, although some preliminary actions have already taken place.

Cortina is one of five host clusters for the Winter Olympics. According to reports, Fifa president Gianni Infantino and International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry suggested the possibility of Russia's reinstatement into international sporting events earlier this week. However, their comments were met with criticism from Ukraine Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi.

Russian athletes have been suspended from all competitions by football governing bodies Fifa and Uefa since February 2022 due to the country's invasion of Ukraine. Similar restrictions apply to Belarus, which is also banned from participating in international sporting events due to its support for Russia.

In contrast, 13 Russian competitors and seven from Belarus were granted eligibility to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics, subject to passing an IOC assessment.

OMG 🀯 just got this news about Italy stopping some major cyber attacks on the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina! I'm literally shook 😲. Can't even imagine what kind of crazy tech they used to try and take down those websites and hotels... and that they're from Russia? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ still trying to wrap my head around it all.

You know, as a fan of the Olympics, it's just so cool to see countries like Italy taking proactive steps to protect these events. And I have to admit, I'm kinda curious about what went down in those attacks... was it a big deal? πŸ€”. But for now, I'm just stoked that everything is going to be okay and the games can go ahead as planned.

And can we talk about how Russia's situation is still so weird? Like, they're trying to come back into international sports events, but there are so many strings attached... it feels like they're stuck in this limbo forever. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anyhoo, fingers crossed the Olympics go smoothly and everyone has a blast! πŸ’–

I'm surprised they didn't mention that Russia's "reinstatement" was just a rumor πŸ€”. It's great that Italy took steps to secure their cyber security, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here - those Russian hackers are always up to something 😬. I mean, have you seen the list of countries involved in international sporting events? It's like they're trying to create some sort of sporting superleague or something πŸ†. But seriously, Ukraine Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi is totally right to be skeptical about Russia's intentions - those guys are always trying to find loopholes 🀯. And what's with the alpine skiing and curling events in Cortina d'Ampezzo? It sounds like they're just throwing a bunch of random sports at us to see what sticks πŸ˜….

Can you believe it? Cyber-attacks targeting the Olympics... back in my day, we didn't have these kinds of threats 🀯. It's crazy how technology has advanced, but so have the bad guys πŸ˜’. Italy doing a good job by thwarting them though, that's what we need more of πŸ’ͺ.

And can you imagine Russia trying to ruin the Olympics again? Like, after all the drama with Ukraine and Belarus... it's just not right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I'm still not sure how they're gonna make it work with the sanctions and all that... 13 Russian competitors showing up is a bit of a surprise, but I guess you can't deny progress πŸ€”.

The IOC should be commended for trying to find middle ground with Russia, but it's also good that Ukraine's got some backbone πŸ’₯. It's gonna be an interesting Olympics, that's for sure... will be keeping an eye on it πŸ‘€

πŸ˜… I'm so glad Italy was able to stop those cyber-attacks on the Winter Olympics! I mean, can you even imagine if they had hacked into all that online stuff? 🀯 It's crazy to think about how vulnerable our digital lives are to attacks like that. I'm also a bit confused about Russia and Belarus getting back into sports after what happened in Ukraine... I feel for the people who were affected by that war, you know? πŸ’” But at the same time, it's cool that some Russian athletes got the chance to compete again. πŸ… It just feels like there's always this balance between allowing countries to participate and not wanting them to get away with things they've done... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” just wondering why Russia's athletes are getting a second chance while Ukraine is still dealing with the aftermath of the war 🌎 at least 13 of those Russian competitors have passed an IOC assessment 😐 but what about all the other sanctions in place? doesn't seem right πŸ’Έ

OMG 🀯 just heard that Italy totally saved the day by stopping those nasty cyber-attacks on the Milan-Cortina Olympics πŸŽ‰! I mean, can you even imagine if they had succeeded? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ That would've been a total disaster for the Games and everyone involved. Russia trying to cause some drama just before the event starts? Not cool πŸ˜’.

And now that it's all good, maybe we can finally talk about how awesome this new Olympic platform is! 🀩 I mean, have you tried using the IOC app? It's so easy to follow your favorite teams and athletes in real-time. And with 5G on site, the streaming quality is totally sick 😲.

Also, what's up with Russia trying to get back into the sports scene? Can't they just chill for a bit and focus on their own games instead of causing trouble for others? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Anyway, I'm super hyped for the Olympics now – bring on the snowboarding, ice skating, and curling! ⛸️

just heard that Italy was able to stop those cyber-attacks on the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina πŸ’»πŸ… it's a huge relief for the organizers and athletes alike. still wondering how these attacks even happened tho πŸ€” guess it just goes to show how vulnerable our online systems can be πŸ™ƒ anyway, hope everything goes smoothly for the Games and that we can all enjoy some great sports and competition without any major issues 😊

OMG you won't believe this cyber-attack news on Italy 🀯! It's like they're saying "you can't have all that glory without a little drama" right before the Olympics start πŸ’ͺ. I mean, Russia tried to hit them where it hurts (in this case, their websites and hotels) but Italy was ready for 'em πŸ‘. You gotta give 'em credit, they're not gonna let some cyber-attacks bring 'em down 😊. And on a separate note, can we talk about how these Russian athletes are getting a second chance? It's like, if you messed up, now you get to try again πŸ€”. I guess it's all part of being human and learning from our mistakes πŸ’•.

You gotta wonder what's going on with these cyber attacks πŸ€”. I mean, trying to disrupt the Olympics is like, super frustrating for everyone involved, you know? And Russia, of all places πŸ˜’. But at the same time, it's not like they're doing anything new here. We've seen these kinds of attacks before, especially in high-profile events.

I'm kinda curious about why Russia would even bother trying to hit Italy and Cortina d'Ampezzo specifically though. Are they trying to send a message or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And what's with all the back-and-forth between FIFA and the IOC on Russia's reinstatement? It's like, just get it together, you know? πŸ˜…

Can you believe it? Cyber attacks on the Olympics already! 🀯 Back in my day, we didn't even have Wi-Fi at home, let alone worry about hackers trying to ruin the world cup! πŸ˜‚ I mean, what's next? Hackers gonna crash the games too? 🚫 That Russia thing is getting outta hand... always causing drama and tension. FIFA and IOC should really be more careful with who they let back in the game, considering all that's happened. 🀝 But hey, at least Italy got their act together to protect their Olympics. 😊

I'm so relieved that Italy was able to protect the cyber security of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina πŸ™ŒπŸΌ! It's crazy to think about how vulnerable our online world is and it's amazing what people can get up to when they want to cause trouble 😬. I mean, 13 Russian competitors and 7 from Belarus being allowed to compete despite the whole Russia-Ukraine situation just goes to show that there are always gray areas and not everyone agrees on what's right or wrong πŸ€”. Can't wait to watch the skiing events in Cortina - it's going to be a wild ride! ⛷️

omg this is so cool that Italy was able to protect their website from those cyber attacks πŸ™ŒπŸ’» i feel like they must have had some top-notch security measures in place lol anyway glad no one got hacked and that the games can still go ahead as planned - milan-cortina is already looking so stunning for the olympics πŸ˜πŸ”οΈ cant wait to see all the awesome events & athletes competing πŸ’–
