Arkansas man who disappeared with his ailing dog had terminal illness, believed to have died by suicide ‘in the sea’

Arkansas Man Believed to Have Taken Own Life in North Carolina's Outer Banks, Family Reveals Terminal Illness and Grieving Father's Plea for Closure

A heartbreaking search operation came to an abrupt end last week as the family of 39-year-old Arkansas native Christopher Palmer called off all efforts to locate him after his truck was found abandoned on a beach in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The tragic discovery, made three days after Palmer's last communication with his loved ones, has left many searching for answers about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

According to family sources, Palmer had been living with a terminal illness and was coping with the devastating news by taking his own life "in the sea." His father, Bren, revealed in a poignant Facebook post that Christopher loved the outdoors and valued his independence but would not have wanted the treatments ahead to take away his freedom.

Palmer's final journey took him on foot to the coast, accompanied by his loyal German shepherd dog Zoey, who was battling severe hip dysplasia and other ailments. The elderly dog had been laid to rest in a shallow grave in the woods before Palmer set out on his last adventure.

While details about the illness are scarce, Bren shared that volunteers found evidence of Zoey's final days, including medications for her various health issues. It is believed that Palmer spent time in the woods to be with his beloved pet in her final moments.

The search operation, which involved numerous volunteers and a crew from the United Cajun Navy, came to an end as Bren concluded that his son had tragically perished at sea. The father's heart-wrenching post on Facebook acknowledged the emotional burden of dealing with serious medical challenges and encouraged awareness about mental health struggles during such times.

Palmer's story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of seeking help and support when faced with life-altering circumstances. As his family navigates this difficult time, they are left to cope with the loss of a loved one who valiantly fought against the cruel hand of fate.

🌊😔 I'm really sad to hear about Christopher Palmer's story. It sounds like he was in so much pain and struggled to find peace when dealing with his terminal illness and poor Zoey's health issues. His dad's post is so heartfelt, it's clear he's still trying to process everything too 🤕. We should all try to be more understanding and supportive of people going through tough times. Mental health is just as important as physical health, you know? 💡 It's heartbreaking that Christopher didn't get the help and support he needed before things took a turn for the worse 😔. Let's hope his story can help raise awareness about the importance of seeking help when we need it most 🌟

man, this is so sad 🤕 can't imagine losing someone like that over their own health struggles it's like he was just trying to take away some pain and found himself lost at sea instead 🌊 his dog zoey was battling serious issues too, poor thing 🐾 i think we should all be more understanding when people are struggling with mental health stuff or chronic illnesses they need our support not judgment 💖 Bren's post on facebook is so heartbreaking but it's also really inspiring that he's using this as a way to raise awareness about the importance of seeking help during tough times 👏

😔 Lost so much to mental health struggle in 2025 & it's still hard to talk about 👀 Palmer's story is a harsh reminder we need to be there for each other 🤝 Can't let illnesses win, keep living & seeking help 💪

man... this dude's story is just so sad 😔... it's like he was trying to escape the pain but ended up losing himself in the process 🌊... his dad's post about him wanting to keep his independence while still facing treatment for a terminal illness... that's like something we can all relate to, you know? 💔... we've all had those moments where we feel like we're losing ourselves or just want some space from the world. but it sounds like Chris didn't have that option... and now his family is left to pick up the pieces 🤕... it's a harsh reminder of how hard life can be, especially when you're facing something as tough as illness 😩... anyway, I think we can all take away the importance of being kind to ourselves and others during those dark times. we should strive to create a community where people feel comfortable seeking help and support without fear of judgment 🤝💖

🤕 It's so sad to hear about Christopher's story... I mean, you gotta feel for the guy, right? He's got a terminal illness and is still trying to enjoy life on his own terms, which is super admirable. But at the same time, it's hard to shake off the feeling that there could've been more done to help him cope with everything he was going through 🤔. I mean, we're not talking about some fancy medical treatment here, just a regular person trying to deal with the worst news ever. And now his dad's gotta be dealing with all this grief and whatnot... 🤕 It's just so emotional.

sadness 🤕... thinkin bout all the ppl strugglin wit mental health & cancer at da same time... its like no one should have 2 b burdened w/ dat kinda weight 🌪️ zoey 💔 she was so brave too, facin all that pain & still lovin her human till da end 💕 hope more ppl talk openly about these issues so we can all support each other better 🤝

man... 🤕 this is just heartbreaking... can't believe zoey had it so bad too... poor pup 🐾💔 i feel like we're losing so many people to mental health struggles these days... it's not just about taking your own life, it's about the suffering you go through beforehand... and now brent has to deal with this alone... his post is so raw and honest, it's a cry for help, but also a tribute to christopher's strength in fighting against his illness 🌊💪 i hope people can learn from this tragic story and not be afraid to talk about their struggles... we need more awareness and support 🤝

😔 OMG u no its so sad 2 c how ppl r struggling w/ mental health issues & terminal illnesses 🤕 like Christopher Palmer his fam was goin thru so much & he just wanted 2 be w/ his dog Zoey in her last mins ❤️ it makes me wish we cud b more supportive 4 each other thru these tough times 🤗 u think we shd start a convo about mental health & self care on here?? 🤝

I don’t usually comment but... I feel like we're seeing more and more stories about people struggling with mental health and terminal illnesses, and it's heartbreaking 🤕. It's like, we're so quick to talk about the importance of seeking help, but what about when it's really hard to ask for that help? Like, Christopher's family had to keep searching for him because they didn't want to lose hope... it's a heavy burden to carry around 💔. And Zoey's story is just devastating - I mean, poor pup was fighting so many battles at the same time 🐶💕. It makes me think we need to be more understanding and supportive of people who are struggling with mental health issues, especially when they're dealing with life-altering circumstances 🤝

omg u feel for bren & zoey 🐶😔 he was literally fighting so hard 2 live, but terminal illnesses r really tough 2 deal wth especially when u gotta see ur pet suffer like zoey did 🤕 & rn its like, whr do we even go from here? 🤷‍♂️ his dad's post is literally giving me all the feels though 💔 he's right tho, ppl need 2 talk more about mental health struggles during hard times cuz it's def not just physical health u gotta worry bout when u're dealin w/ life-altering stuff 🤗

It's just so sad that Chris had to go through all that pain and struggle 🤕... I mean, living with a terminal illness is tough enough, but when you're coping with it by taking your own life, it's just heartbreaking 😔. And Zoey, poor pup, she was already suffering from her own health issues, and to think Chris had to leave her like that... it's just too much 💔. I wish his family and friends could find some peace of mind, but for now, they're left with a lot of unanswered questions 🤔. We need more awareness about mental health struggles during terminal illnesses, maybe then things wouldn't end like this 😢.

ugh, this is so sad 🤕 my heart goes out 2 Christopher's fam, especially his dad Bren he's going thru so much grief right now & i can only imagine how hard it must be 4 him & Zoey :( poor doggy she deserved 2 b with her human 4 a lil longer zoey was such a loyal companion 2 Chris & it's heartbreaking that they had 2 say goodbye like dat 🐶❤️ anyway, i think we should all just take a sec 2 appreciate our own lives & loved ones we don't no what others are goin thru, so let's be kind 2 each other & support those who need it most 🤗

😔🌊 I feel so bad for Chris's dad, Bren. He's really upset and struggling to come to terms with what happened. It's heartbreaking that Zoey had to suffer from her health issues too... it's like they were both in so much pain 🐾💔. I think we should be careful not to jump to conclusions about Chris's decision, though - he was clearly going through a tough time with his illness, and I can see why he might've wanted some freedom from all the treatments 😕. It's still hard to imagine what it must've been like for him and Zoey on that last journey... 🌅
