I'm not loving the gun-fu fight scene as much as I thought I would . The directors seemed to think that just throwing some crazy stunts together with Sammo Hung at the helm would be enough, but honestly it felt like we've seen this a million times before . And don't even get me started on how predictable the whole "villain as tyrant" thing is . It's like they took every cliche from the time-travel genre and mashed them all together into one big mess . I'm still rooting for a more original take on this theme, you know? Maybe some actual character development and plot twists instead of just relying on nostalgia and formulaic action scenes
I mean, I love a good time-travel story as much as the next person, but "Back to the Past" feels like they're just rehashing old ideas without adding anything fresh to the mix. I watched it with my friends from school and we were all like "we've seen this before" . The gun-fu fight scenes are cool, don't get me wrong, but they start to feel like a repeat of every other time-travel film out there. And can we talk about the plot twist? It's just so predictable . I think what really lets it down is that it forgets to make its characters feel fully fleshed out - Ken and Hong are supposed to be these complex dudes, but they come across as cardboard cutouts instead.
I don’t usually comment but I felt like saying that I was kinda disappointed with how they handled the sequel. I mean, time travel movies can be so much fun if you put some creative spin on them, but this one just feels like more of the same old gun-fu fights and outdated plots . The cast is still great, don’t get me wrong, Louis Koo and Sammo Hung are legends! But sometimes I wish they could try to mix things up a bit more instead of relying on what worked 20 years ago .
