Survivors of the October 7 Hamas Attacks Share Harrowing Story with Bay Area Jewish Community

The Bay Area Jewish community gathered at Congregation Chevra Thilim in San Francisco on Sunday night to hear from two survivors of the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. The event was organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council, and Rebecca Goodman, a local resident and employee, turned out to bear witness to their story.

The two survivors, Eliya and Ziv, who were both kidnapped and held captive for over half a year, shared their harrowing experience with the community. They described being thrown grenades into their bomb shelter, where they endured unimaginable horrors. Despite the traumatic ordeal, both survivors showed remarkable resilience and hope.

Eliya was held hostage for 505 days, with little to no contact with his girlfriend Ziv, who remained in the shelter. However, Ziv's bravery eventually led to her own rescue, after which she fought tirelessly to secure Eliya's release. Their reunion was a moment of pure joy, captured on video.

The event highlighted the importance of sharing their story with others, not just within the Jewish community but also with Americans who may not be Jewish. "Now, with all the antisemitism in the world, I think it's really important that even Americans stand alongside them to show support," said Greg Hutchinson, a San Anselmo resident.

The survivors' story serves as a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of never forgetting such tragedies. As Siena Naaman Cohen, co-founder and CEO of The Chosen Foundation, aptly put it, "It's a miracle" that Eliya and Ziv survived against all odds.

😱 I just can't even imagine being in those shoes... 505 days trapped in a bomb shelter, no contact with loved ones, and then the horrors of grenades being thrown into your home... it's like something out of a nightmare 🀯. But what really gets me is how Ziv kept going, not giving up hope, and eventually her bravery led to Eliya's rescue πŸ’ͺ. It's so inspiring to see that love and resilience can overcome even the darkest situations ❀️. And you're right, Greg, it's super important for Americans to stand with the Jewish community and show support 🀝. We gotta keep the memories of these victims alive and never forget what happened on October 7th πŸ’”.

omg u can feel the love in their story its so inspiring to see how eliya & ziv stuck together thru thick & thin i'm literally crying thinking about them being held captive for 505 days!! πŸ€―πŸ™ but what's even more amazing is how ziv fought tirelessly 2 get eliya released their reunion video is giving me all the feels πŸ˜ŠπŸ’• it shows us that hope can never be fully lost even in the darkest times i wish every1 could experience the power of love & resilience like they did 🌟

I gotta say, this whole thing sounds super intense 😱. Two people held captive for half a year? That's crazy talk 🀯. I'm glad they're sharing their story with the community, but I think it's also important to remember that not everyone is gonna be down with all this drama πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. Like, I get why we need to support these guys, but can't we just focus on some more uplifting stuff for a change? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The antisemitism thing is definitely super relevant, though - it's getting out of hand 🚫. Maybe this story will help bring people together instead of tearing them apart, that'd be something πŸ’•.

I'm still trying to process what I just read... 😱 These two survivors are literally superheroes πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ their story is so harrowing it's hard to believe they made it out alive πŸ’₯ being held captive for over 5 months, with no contact with each other? that's just not human 🀯 and yet, they found a way to keep each other going, even in the darkest of times ❀️ I think it's amazing that their story is being shared with the community, especially in this time where antisemitism is on the rise πŸ˜• it's so important we stand together with them and show our support πŸ’ͺ

can you believe what these two survivors went through? 505 days in captivity is just insane 🀯 and yet they still managed to hold on to hope and each other πŸ’• their story is a testament to the human spirit and I think it's so important that we're sharing it with others, especially Americans who may not know much about what's going on in Israel 😊 it's not just about showing support for one community but for humanity as a whole ❀️ these two guys are living proof that even in the darkest of times, there's always a way out 🌟

omg I'm literally shook by their story!! can't even imagine being held captive for 505 days 🀯😱 it's so brave of them to share this with us, especially now with everything going on in the world. we need more people like Eliya and Ziv who are willing to stand up against hatred and spread love ❀️🌎 I wish we could've met them in person, they must be total angels on earth 🀩 anyway, can we please make a campaign to support these survivors and their loved ones? πŸ™πŸ’–

OMG 🀯 I'm telling you, this whole thing just doesn't add up... Like how did these two even survive for half a year in a bomb shelter? πŸ€” And what about the grenades? How did they not get blown to kingdom come? πŸ˜‚ It's like they were meant to be rescued or something. And have you seen the video of their reunion? It looks so staged, if you ask me. πŸ’β€β™€οΈ I'm just saying, this whole thing might be more than it seems...

πŸ€• I'm still trying to process the horror these two ppl endured 🀯 505 days in captivity is just too much to imagine... and to think they had to deal with grenades thrown into their shelter 😱 it's a miracle they're alive at all πŸ’« Their story is such a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict & how important it is to share these stories with others 🌎 Not just Jewish ppl, but Americans too, we should be supporting them in any way we can πŸ™ Let's make sure we never forget tragedies like this and always stand alongside those who've been affected πŸ’•

I just got back from the most amazing hike in the redwoods 🌳🏞️ and I'm still thinking about how those trees can live for thousands of years while humans are always like "what's our purpose?" You know, it's like they're trying to outlast us or something πŸ˜‚. Anyway, have you ever tried making homemade granola? It's literally the best snack ever! πŸžοΈπŸ‘Œ

omg I just watched this video of those two survivors from the october 7 hamas attacks 🀯 and my heart is literally shattered into a million pieces 😭 they went through so much trauma and pain, still, their love for each other kept them going πŸ’• it's so inspiring to see how eliya's girlfriend ziv fought tirelessly to get him released, she's literally a superhero πŸ¦Έβ€β™€οΈ I feel like we need more stories like this shared with the world, especially with americans who might not even know what's happening in israel πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ it's so important that we support these survivors and show them love and kindness ❀️

Idk how people can be so naive πŸ˜’ thinkin' Hamas is just another country w/ issues πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Newsflash: they're terrorists! πŸ‘Š But at the same time, I'm so grateful these two survivors made it out alive πŸ’₯ and their love story is straight fire πŸ”₯. We should def be supporting them more than just with a few claps πŸ™. It's like, we gotta listen to their stories & spread awareness about what's goin' on in Israel πŸ—ΊοΈ 'cause if not, people'll just keep ignorant πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

I just watched this video of the 2 survivors from the Oct 7 Hamas attacks & I'm still trying to process everything πŸ€―πŸ™. Their story is insane - being held captive for half a year, barely having contact with each other... it's like something out of a horror movie 😱. But what's even more amazing is that Ziv kept fighting for Eliya's release, and they were finally reunited after so long πŸŽ‰πŸ’•. It's such an important reminder to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community & show support against antisemitism - we should all be listening & learning from their story πŸ’¬

OMG u guys can't even imagine what those two ppl went thru!!!! 505 days locked up with no phone n no contact w/ their loved ones????? i feel like shedding tears just reading this story its so sad but also wow to think about the love & hope that kept them going especially Ziv who waited for Eliya's release even when things seemed hopeless u can feel the strength of their bond from this story πŸ€―πŸ’• its literally a miracle they made it out alive

🀯 505 days? That's insane! 😱 Did you guys see the stats on PTSD after hostage situations? πŸ“Š According to the National Center for PTSD, up to 80% of hostages develop PTSD symptoms. These two are like superhumans πŸ’ͺ. And can we talk about the importance of social media sharing their story? πŸ“ˆ As a data point, did you know that 71% of Americans trust news shared on Facebook more than other sources? πŸ“° It's all about amplifying their voices and promoting empathy! 🌎 The Chosen Foundation just raised over $100k for their organization after the event. πŸ’Έ That's some serious community power in action! 🀝

πŸ˜• it's heartbreaking to think about what those two young people went through - being held captive for so long, with no idea if they'd ever see their loved ones again 🀯. but at the same time, you've got to give them credit for finding strength in each other and holding on to hope πŸ’•. i think it's really brave of them to share their story with others, especially with people who might not have a personal connection to what happened 🌎. maybe by sharing their experiences, we can all learn to be more empathetic and supportive of one another ❀️.

man.. just watching this video of eliya and ziv's reunion is giving me chills 🀯... i mean can u even imagine being held captive for half a year with no contact w/ ur loved ones? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ it's crazy to think about how they both went through that trauma & still managed to hold onto hope πŸ’•. we gotta keep sharing their story so ppl know what's really going on in the world 🌎. and yeah, it's super important for americans to stand alongside israel & show support πŸ™. no hate, just love & understanding ❀️.

πŸ™ I'm still trying to process how people can just hate on Israel like that 🀯 I mean, I get that there are two sides to every story, but come on, 505 days without contact? That's insane 😱 Eliya and Ziv's love for each other kept them going even when all hope seemed lost ❀️ And can we talk about how crazy it is that Ziv fought so hard to secure her partner's release after she was rescued? πŸ’ͺ It's a testament to their strength as individuals and together πŸ™Œ I don't care what the world thinks, I believe in standing up for Israel and its people πŸ’―

Ugh I'm still thinking about those two survivors Eliya and Ziv πŸ€•, what's the deal with Hamas and their attacks? It's been years now but people are still getting kidnapped and held captive 😩, and now they're sharing their story so we can learn from it. I don't get why there's not more awareness about this stuff, we should be supporting them more πŸ’―, not just our Jewish community. Greg Hutchinson said something right though, even Americans need to step up and show support for these survivors 🀝. Can we please talk about the importance of empathy and understanding? We gotta keep pushing for peace and an end to all this violence πŸ™πŸ’•
