Bear living under Altadena home finally leaves, California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirms

A California Black Bear has vacated the home in Altadena after a month-long sojourn, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The bear, identified by its ear tag "Yellow 2120," had taken up residence under a crawlspace beneath a house sometime in late November.

The homeowner, Ken Johnson, reported being at his wit's end as he struggled to coax the massive 550-pound animal out of the confined space. Department biologists attempted to trap the bear in mid-December but instead ensnared another creature entirely.

Johnson expressed frustration and concern, stating that the situation was going nowhere and worrying about potential damage to his home. The CDFW has confirmed that the bear is no longer present on the premises, although it remains unclear when or why it departed.

According to Cort Klopping of the CDFW, this instance highlights a common scenario during the winter months, where bears seek out warm and safe spaces to den. Klopping expressed disappointment at the situation, preferring to see these animals thriving in their natural habitats rather than taking up residence under human dwellings.

While the Department has committed to assisting Johnson, they emphasized that securing his crawlspace will be his responsibility once the bear is gone. A representative for Johnson noted earlier that he was cautious not to take any drastic measures, which might lead to legal repercussions regarding a protected animal in his home.

Ugh I'm just so fed up with these situations where humans think they can just build their homes and expect bears to magically avoid them lol like what even is the point of having wildlife conservation if we're just gonna keep messing with their habitats 🙄

I mean come on Ken Johnson, you're literally worried about your crawlspace getting damaged by a 550-pound bear? That's not your problem it's the CDFW's job to figure out why this bear was even in your house in the first place! And now they're just gonna leave you to deal with it yourself like no strings attached 🤷‍♂️

I get that bears need a warm and safe space during winter, but can't we find a way to make our homes less appealing to them or something? Like, I don't know, using bear-proof trash cans or something? It's not rocket science 🚀

I feel bad for Ken Johnson, he must have been super stressed out with this massive black bear living under his house 🐻😩. I mean, can you imagine having 550 pounds of fur and claws in your crawlspace? 🤯 It's no wonder he was at his wit's end trying to get it out. And poor department biologists, getting tangled up with another creature instead of catching the bear 😂.

I think it's good that the CDFW is stepping in to help Johnson secure his crawlspace, but I wish they could've done something more to encourage the bear to leave on its own 🐻🏠. Like, maybe some bear-friendly alternatives to human homes? A warm denning site would be awesome for these animals during winter months ⭐️.

It's also interesting that this incident is not unique and happens a lot during winter months when bears seek out warmth and safety 😊. Maybe we should think about ways to coexist with wildlife and provide them better options instead of forcing them into human spaces? 🤔

omg u can believe this thing happened! 🐻😱 like a whole month in someone's crawlspace? i feel bad for the bear tho... 550 lbs is huge and they just wanna snuggle up n take a nap 🤷‍♀️, not get trapped.
i guess it makes sense that bears seek warmth & safety during winter, but still, can't imagine living w/ a furry roommate like that! 😂
the homeowner was really worried tho, gotta respect his concerns about damage 2 his home. hope he gets some help securein' the crawlspace now that the bear's gone 🤞

omg u guys idk how stressful it must've been 4 Ken Johnson having that bear in his crawlspace lol like 550 pounds is no joke!! i feel bad 4 the poor dude but at the same time i can see why he was worried about his home i mean who wnt's got a giant bear chillin under their floor rn anyway, glad it's all over & hope Ken gets some help securing that crawlspace hehe

OMG, can you even imagine having a 550-pound bear stuck under your house? 🤯 I mean, I get it, bears need places to hide during winter and all that, but come on! That's like me trying to sleep in my backyard tent... not gonna happen 😂. Glad the CDFW was able to help out Ken Johnson, though - those poor homeowners gotta be worried about their homes getting damaged or something 🏠😬. Hope the bear is doing well and finds some comfy spot to snuggle up in... like a big ol' cave somewhere 🐻❤️.

Wow 🤯, can you imagine having a 550-pound black bear stuck under your house? 🏠😱 I'm just glad the CDFW intervened and helped resolve the situation without harming the bear. Interesting how bears seek out warm spaces to den during winter, it's like they're looking for a cozy Airbnb 🏡🐻! Anyway, hope Ken Johnson gets his crawlspace secured soon to avoid any more issues 😊.

I feel bad for Ken Johnson - having a 550-pound bear stuck under his crawlspace for a month must be super stressful 🤯! On the other hand, I'm glad the CDFW was able to safely relocate the bear without harming it 🐻💪. It's just wild how these bears seek out warm and safe spaces during winter months - totally get why they'd want to cozy up somewhere 😊. The fact that the Department is looking for ways to prevent this from happening again in the future is a great sign 🌟! I hope Ken is able to secure his crawlspace properly and avoid any more bear-related drama 👍
