A tribute to R&B legends Boyz II Men is set to hit the streets of Philadelphia's Point Breeze neighborhood, just blocks away from where the group's members first met. Mural Arts has announced plans for a new mural honoring the iconic quartet, with an artist selection process underway.
The 1122 Broad St building will serve as the backdrop for the tribute, situated near the CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) school, where Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wayanรก Morris attended. The Boyz II Men crooners rose to fame in 1991 with their debut album "Cooleyhighharmony," which included the hit single "Motownphilly." Over the years, the group has undergone lineup changes, but Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wayanรก Morris have carried on the legacy.
The mural project is part of Mural Arts' broader plans to celebrate Philadelphia's musical heritage as the city approaches its semiquincentennial. Other tributes in the works include a piece honoring Questlove and an LGBTQ rights champion, Gloria Casarez. While no artist has been selected yet, Mural Arts is now accepting submissions until February 13th.
The final mural design should capture the essence of Boyz II Men's career and their place in Philadelphia's musical history. The nonprofit aims to create a lasting tribute that showcases the group's impact on the city's cultural landscape.
