Calls grow in Iran for independent inquiry into protest death toll

Iran's government has announced plans to publish the names of protesters who have been killed during recent demonstrations, a move aimed at quelling accusations that mass killings took place under the guise of suppressing dissent. The plan, while seen as a positive step by some reformists, is unlikely to satisfy everyone given the long history of distrust between the state and society.

Critics argue that the government's move will not be transparent enough and could even fuel further controversy. Mohsen Borhani, a law professor at Tehran University, believes that creating an independent website to announce the names of those killed would provide more assurance. However, there are concerns about the risk faced by families who identify their loved ones as victims, as they may still face retribution.

The scale of the human toll is staggering, with estimates ranging from 30,000 to tens of thousands of deaths. Many believe that the official death toll, which stands at around 3,117, is far too low and does not reflect the true extent of the violence.

Iranian reformists have called for an independent committee to investigate this "unprecedented disaster" and produce a transparent report on the events. They argue that it's essential to address the deep-seated distrust between the state and society by building a stronger civil society.

Former president Hassan Rouhani has also weighed in, stating that the recent protests demonstrate the need for significant change within Iran's political system. He called for the formation of new parties and an end to electoral filtering.

Separately, an unofficial committee has been set up to identify all those still detained following the crackdown on protests. The exact number of detainees is unknown, but it's believed to be in the tens of thousands.

One concerning aspect is that many children under 18 are being held, with some families having lost their breadwinners and facing significant financial hardship. Initial sentences issued have been relatively lenient, with two to five years on the table, but the reality for those arrested may be more severe due to their precarious economic situation.

Ultimately, the road ahead will depend on how effectively the government can address these issues and build trust between itself and its citizens.

I'm thinking what's going on in Iran is super complicated ๐Ÿค”... They want to publish names of protesters killed during demos but I think it's gonna be a tough sell for some ppl... Like, why not just set up an independent website like law prof Mohsen Borhani suggested? ๐Ÿ“Š It'd give more transparency and maybe even help families who are still searching for their loved ones... But at the same time, there's this whole risk of retribution thing that's super scary ๐Ÿ’€. And let's be real, the number of deaths is crazy - 30k to tens of thousands? That doesn't add up with the official death toll of 3k... I feel like reformists are right in saying an independent investigation and report would be a good start ๐Ÿ“. We gotta see how much trust can be built between the government and society...

OMG u guys, this is so messed up! I mean, I get that they wanna quell all the accusations but releasing names ain't the answer, tbh ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's like they think we're just gonna take their word for it and forget about all the evidence of those poor protesters getting killed ๐Ÿ’€. Newsflash: we won't buy it! And what about those families who are still searching for loved ones? They deserve answers, not more questions ๐Ÿค”.

And can we talk about how this is all so transparently controlled by the government? Like, where's the independent investigation?! We need to hold them accountable and make sure they're not just trying to cover their own tracks ๐Ÿšซ. It's like they think they can just publish some names and voilร ! Problem solved ๐Ÿ˜’. But we know that's not how it works.

And those kids under 18, OMG u guys... my heart is breaking ๐Ÿค•. They shouldn't be suffering because of this mess. We need to demand better from our leaders and make sure they're prioritizing the safety and well-being of all citizens ๐ŸŒŸ. It's time for some real change in Iran, not just a half-measure fix ๐Ÿ”„.

Anywayz, I'm just so done with all this drama ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Can we please just get to the truth and find out what really happened? ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I'm still living in a world that's just like the one I grew up with... remember when we used to talk about 'transparency' back in '09? Now it seems like they're releasing names, but who knows if it's real? It feels like a PR stunt, ya know?

And what's with the sentences for those detained? 2-5 years for some of these poor souls? That's not even a slap on the wrist. I remember when we were fighting for free speech in '07 and it seemed like our lives didn't hang in the balance.

I'm worried about these families who think their loved ones are dead, but might still be facing repercussions from the authorities. It's like we're living in some dystopian novel... not that I don't love a good sci-fi flick ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ’ญ

If only they could get an independent committee to sort this all out and give us some real answers... you know, like how many people really did die during those protests? 30,000 or tens of thousands, who knows?

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ Iran's move is a good start, but transparency is key ๐Ÿ“Š. Creating an independent site would give more hope for families wanting answers ๐Ÿ’”. So many lives lost (30k+ estimated deaths ๐Ÿ˜ข). Reforms needed ASAP โฑ๏ธ. More lenient sentencing for those arrested, especially kids under 18 ๐Ÿ‘ถ. The future depends on how gov addresses these issues and rebuilds trust ๐Ÿค

I think it's a good start that Iran is planning to publish the names of protesters who've been killed... ๐Ÿค” but I'm not sure if it'll be enough to calm everyone down. I mean, 30,000+ deaths? That's crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! The official death toll just doesn't add up. And what about all those people still in detention? Some are kids under 18... that's just wrong ๐Ÿ˜”. We need to see some real change happen. Maybe an independent investigation and a transparent report would help build trust between the government and its citizens. It's not gonna be easy, but I think it's worth a shot ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” I'm kinda worried about this new plan tho. Publishin' names of protesters who got killed is a good start but it's not like the gov'll just magically open up all its secrets overnight lol ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ They gotta really commit to makin' things right, including the whole detainment situation... 30k+ deaths? That's insane ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Can't even begin to imagine how many families are affected. We should be thinkin' about gettin' more info on those who got detained too ๐Ÿค
