Cancelling 'zombie' subscriptions could save Britons up to £400 a year, survey finds

Millions of UK households are quietly draining their bank accounts with unused or duplicate subscription services. A recent survey by Nationwide has found that 19% of subscribers do not utilize every platform they pay for, resulting in recurring charges that could save them hundreds of pounds per year.

The start of a new year is seen as an opportunity to reassess spending and priorities. Experts recommend conducting an audit of subscription services, including apps and streaming platforms, to identify any forgotten or unused subscriptions.

Rebecca Bebbington from discount site NetVoucherCodes suggests creating a list of all regular payments, noting down which services are actually used and marked with renewal dates. Armed with this information, subscribers can weigh up the value of each service and make informed decisions about cancellations.

The key to saving money on subscription services is not just about cancelling unused accounts but also about optimizing existing subscriptions. For example, switching from individual streaming plans to a premium family plan can be significantly cheaper for households with multiple members.

With new consumer protections set to come into effect later this year, companies will be required to contact customers with details of their subscriptions and provide guidance on how to cancel them.

Before making any changes, subscribers should take the time to review their subscription services and make informed decisions about what they want to keep and what they can let go of. By doing so, they could save up to £400 per year, according to Nationwide's research.

🤩 oh my gosh, can you believe how much people are wasting money on subscriptions?! 🤑 I mean, 19% of people not using everything they pay for? That's crazy talk! 💸 it's like, we're all guilty of this at some point, but now that the new consumer protections are coming in, companies will have to reach out and remind us to cancel unused accounts. which is actually kinda awesome because it's gonna save us all so much dosh! 💰 so yeah, let's get ahead of this and do a subscription audit, mark down what we're using and when we need to renew, and make some smart decisions about what's worth keeping and what can go 👋

A new year is a perfect time for people in the UK to take control of their finances and make smart decisions about their subscription services. It's surprising how many households are wasting money on unused or duplicate services, losing hundreds of pounds each year! Reviewing and optimizing existing subscriptions can help households save big time. Optimizing means not just canceling unused accounts but also making the most out of what they already pay for. By doing so, people might be able to save up to £400 per year! 📈

omg i just saw this thread from like a month ago and im dying lol i always do this but never thought about writing it down 🤦‍♀️. i think its crazy how many people dont even realize theyre wasting money on these things. i mean, i just cancelled my gym membership because i was only using it 2x a week 😅. i had to go through all my old receipts and make a list of what im paying for and what im actually using. its been super helpful. maybe we should start a thread about this? 🤔

omg i was like "why do people even have all these subsciptions lol" anyway just thinkin bout this...i have a few friends who still have that ol' spotify premium they dont use anymore lol what would happen if u got a notification from ur bank sayin "hey, its time to cancel this subsciption"? might be a bit harsh but yeah, makin a list of all those subs and checkin what u actually use sounds like a solid plan tho

omg i totally feel like i'm guilty of this rn 🤦‍♀️ everyone's always saying we should be more organized but honestly it's hard to keep track of all our subscriptions 📊 i've been doing some research and found out that most people dont even know they have duplicate subs 🤑 next year ill make sure to go through my list and cancel anything thats not worth the money 💸

ugh i cant believe ppl r just draining thier bank accounts like thats no big deal! its a new yr already & ppl r still stuck on subscription madness lol what if u cancel ur netflix sub but then u dont wanna watch anymore? or u get that amazon prime delivery & u really need it every week 🤷‍♀️

ive been doin this audit thing for like 2 yrs now & its changed my life! i can see which apps r wastin away in my phone & which ones r worth keepin. some ppl might think its boring but trust me its liberatin 🙌

🤔 I mean come on... who keeps these things? Like, if you're not using it, cancel it! It's not that hard. And switching to a family plan sounds like a no-brainer. Don't waste your money on individual streaming plans just 'cause you wanna watch solo Netflix sessions 📺. Get a grip, people!

OMG you guys! I'm like totally guilty of having those duplicate subs 🤑📉 I mean, who hasn't, right? 😂 But seriously, it's crazy how much money we can save by just taking a closer look at our spending habits. I've started going through my own list (yes, I made one too 📝) and I found like 3 subs that were no longer needed 💸👋. And you're right, switching to a family plan was a total game-changer for me! 👍 Now I'm saving so much cash and we can use it for more important things... like taking a relaxing Sunday Funday 🥂🌞. Has anyone else done this? What were your finds? 💬 #SubsciptionSavings #NewYearNewMoney #OptimizingMyBudget

I'm low-key annoyed that it takes a survey to remind us all to take control of our subs lol! But for real though, it's a great idea to do an audit and see what we're actually using and what we can cut back on 🤔. I mean, think about it, who hasn't got a Netflix account from 2018 that they never use? 😂 It's like, get rid of the old ones and stick with the faves! And switching to a family plan is a no-brainer if you've got more than one person in the household. Companies need to stop sending us random emails too 📨, can't we just cancel our subs ourselves without them bugging us? Anyway, gotta give credit where credit's due, it's about time someone reminded us to take charge of our money 💸!

I'm totally with you on not wanting to do that audit thingy... think it's a total hassle 🤯. I mean, who wants to take the time to make a list of all their payments and figure out which ones they use? It sounds like more work than just leaving things as they are 😒. And what's the point of even switching to a family plan if you've got everyone at home using individual streaming services already? 🤷‍♂️ Plus, I'm sure companies will be totally transparent about their subscription plans and won't just try to scam people out of their money 🤑. Let's just stick with the status quo and leave our bank accounts alone... it's not like we're going to waste any more money 😴.

Ugh, subscription fatigue is real... 🤯 I mean, who hasn't been guilty of mindlessly signing up for a new streaming service or gym membership only to never use it again? It's like we're all just trying to keep up with the Joneses without actually thinking about whether we really need it. And then there are the duplicate subscriptions - I swear, I have two separate accounts for Netflix and Amazon Prime... 🤪 Not to mention the recurring charges that add up to hundreds of pounds per year. Can't we just take a step back and do a subscription audit like experts suggest? Make a list, review our usage, and cancel what we don't need? It's not rocket science, but I guess it's easier said than done... 😒
