Christian and Muslim faith leaders express 'deep concerns' about Labor bill's impact on free speech – as it happened

Australian Prime Minister continues to push for bipartisanship on proposed hate speech laws despite criticism from both Coalition and Greens parties.

The government has reiterated its commitment to working with opposition parties to pass the legislation, which aims to criminalize online hate speech. However, independent MPs have called on parliament to work across partisan lines to pass the law, citing concerns over public safety.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters is challenging a declaration that gave police more search powers in Melbourne. The declaration was made four months early after its original end date, and the police watchdog is reviewing the matter.

In other news, NSW SES responded to 274 incidents across the state due to heavy rainfall and damaging winds. A pilot national recycling scheme for solar panels is also being established by the government, with up to $24.7m allocated over three years.

The environment minister said that only a small percentage of end-of-life solar panels are currently recovered for recycling, but these materials can be repurposed to support the clean energy transition and help reduce waste.

A child was airlifted out of a flood zone in Victoria after hundreds of people were displaced due to flash flooding. The commissioner stated that warnings issued before the event were adequate "at that point in time".

In another incident, police fatally shot a man in regional NSW who allegedly aimed a bow and arrow at officers. A report from the Productivity Commission has predicted an 18-fold increase in waste from solar systems between now and 2030.

The government will review its response to Australia's climate crisis after a report from the Climate Change Committee made several recommendations for policy changes.

🤔📝 so like what i think is crazy that ppl cant agree on hate speech laws 🤷‍♂️ but on the other hand im all about those solar panels 💡 like $24.7m to recycle them is a good start ⚙️ and did you see that report from the Productivity Commission 18-fold increase in waste is wild 🌪️ like what are we doing 🤦‍♂️ and btw, can we talk about how important it is for climate crisis reports to be taken seriously? 💥

Ugh, can't believe all these issues happening at once 🤯... I mean, what's with this hate speech law? It's just gonna create more drama and controversy, you know? Back in my day, we didn't have all these new-fangled laws to deal with online behavior... we just figured out how to be civil and respectful 😊. And now they're trying to police everything on the internet? It's like, can't they just focus on something positive for once? 🤔

And another thing, what's up with the solar panel recycling scheme? I'm all for saving the planet, but 18-fold increase in waste is crazy! 🌎 That sounds like a recipe for disaster. And what about those end-of-life panels that can't be recycled? Shouldn't we be doing something to help them out instead of just getting rid of them? 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, it's days like these that make me wonder if we're really making progress as a society... or if we're just spinning our wheels 💨. I guess only time will tell...

🤔 so i'm all for bipartisanship on hate speech laws but like how can you expect different parties to agree when it feels like one party is kinda pushing it through? 🤷‍♀️ the fact that independents are calling out for parliament to work together on this is a good point tho, public safety is a big deal. 💡 I'm also loving the move on solar panel recycling - Australia needs to get its act together when it comes to reducing waste, and these materials can actually support our clean energy goals 🌟 what's weird though is that there's still so much uncertainty around how much waste we'll generate from solar systems by 2030... that 18-fold increase is a pretty big concern 🤯

OMG, I'm getting so frustrated with the Aussie gov 🤯! First, they're trying to pass this hate speech law but no one can agree on it 😒. The Greens are like "not good enough" and the Coalition is all "we need more time". And then there's this police declaration in Melbourne that's just causing a ruckus 🚨. I mean, can't they just work together for once?

And on a slightly more positive note, I'm loving the idea of a national recycling scheme for solar panels 💚! It's about time we do something to reduce waste and support our clean energy transition. And let's not forget about that climate crisis report 🌎... seriously, when are they gonna take action?! The stats on solar panel waste are super alarming btw - 18-fold increase in just a few years? 😱
