Apple's foray into mobile gaming is taking another step forward, as the beloved Civilization series is set to arrive on iPhone and iPad devices. A "Civilization VII Arcade Edition" will be available exclusively through Apple Arcade, a subscription-based service that offers ad-free access to exclusive games.
Developed by Behaviour Interactive in collaboration with Firaxis Games, this version promises to deliver an authentic Civilization experience, despite some changes made to the gameplay formula compared to its console and PC counterparts. However, fans of the series may notice some limitations, such as the absence of multiplayer support and certain DLC content not being available on mobile devices.
The Arcade Edition will be playable on iPhone and iPad devices, with touch controls, but it's worth noting that Intel Macs won't be supported due to hardware compatibility issues. This marks a departure from Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption, which was released both as a standalone title and as part of Netflix's subscription service, resulting in significantly more downloads for the latter.
Apple is also expanding its Arcade offerings with other new titles, including Felicity's Door and I Love Hue Too+, and the aforementioned Retrocade digital arcade, featuring classic arcade games such as Asteroids and Galaga. Notably, Retrocade will receive a special Vision Pro release that simulates playing on virtual arcade cabinets in 3D space.
Civilization VII Arcade Edition is set to launch on February 5th, marking another milestone in Apple's growing mobile gaming ecosystem.
