Confessions of a bar-stool athlete | Brief letters

A glimpse into the world of those who have discovered a more active side to their pub-going experience. For some, it's as simple as taking a few laps around the bar while nursing a pint – but for others, it's about pushing the limits. The question on everyone's mind is, how hard can running 13 miles be?

One thing is certain: help will come from unexpected places. For Barry Glendenning, that meant studying the form of past patrons at the Coach and Horses pub, including a nod to Jeffrey Bernard's infamous 'just one' moment. The author of these brief letters found himself transported back in time as he pored over the likes of bar-stool athletes.

On the other hand, others are taking on the challenge in their own unique ways. Beth from Wivenhoe, Essex has taken to reserving double rooms at Premier Inn Milton Keynes for her wife and herself – but with no luck thus far, it seems they're better off roughing it. And then there's Bren Pointer, who tried to do just that.

But the world of bar-stool athletes isn't all about personal space; some take their passion to an entirely different level – literally. Alistair Cant from Edinburgh may not have been familiar with the local geography, but he certainly has an appreciation for Bodø, Norway's 43,000-strong city that somehow managed to pull off a stunning Champions League victory.

The celebrity family feud is another topic altogether, one that Pete Bibby decided not to take on in his letter. And finally, Helen Keats from Brighstone, Isle of Wight, got her say when it came to local lingo – or the lack thereof.

It seems everyone's got a story to tell about their love for running, pubs, and football, but the real question remains: just how hard can 13 miles really be?

ugh i dont know about these people... some of them are like crazy lol. reserving double rooms at premier inn and then being all "nope not gonna use it" thats just wasteful in my opinion 🤦‍♀️.

i do love the idea of bar-stool athletes tho, its like a community thing or something. but seriously, 13 miles is a long way to be running just for a pint... i mean if u can handle that then more power to u but for me im good with a pint from the couch 😂

idk why ppl gotta make running 13 miles out of pub trips lol. some ppl actually enjoy chillin at the bar w/ friends & don't need to burn 500 calories rn 😂🍺 i mean, im all for stayin fit but not necessarily on pub days 🤷‍♀️

lol what is this pub going crazy 🤣 i mean who runs 13 miles in a bar? like are you trying to break some kinda record or what? 😂 and i gotta ask why double rooms at Premier Inn? its not exactly the most romantic thing, plus ur wife has to sleep on the couch too 😂

omg u gotta feel 4 barry glendenning lol he studied ppl at pub n came up w/ da most creative ways 2 prep 4 13 mile runs like reserving double rooms @ premier inn 🤣 & even tryna rough it w/ his wife 😂 meanwhile, alistair cant just chillin in bodø, norway, watchin' football lol that's da kinda dedication u need. but seriously tho, its all about da community n da passion 4 running, pubs, n football. whoever gets thru 13 miles first, wins my respect 👏

I'm telling you, 13 miles is not that hard. I mean, what's a few laps around the bar while nursing a pint gonna do, right? 🤣 People are making a big deal out of nothing. I've seen guys running around with their laptops in hand and still manage to finish a marathon. It's all about mental toughness and having a good excuse for not going back to work the next day 😂.

awww man i feel like these people r doin so much more thn what most ppl wud even think of when they r havin a pint at the pub lol 13 miles is crazy but it's all about findin ur passion & pushin beyond wht u think u can do 🏃‍♀️💪 i mean wut's the harm in takin double rooms @ premier inn if it means bein able to run 13 miles with ur better half ?? love that ppl r showin off their unique ways of gettin fit & havin fun

I'm still in shock that these pub-goers think they're athletes 🤣. Like, 13 miles is a big ask, even for those who are into this sort of thing. And what's with reserving double rooms at Premier Inn? That's just weird 😂. But hey, to each their own, right? I mean, if you want to run 13 miles and then go back to the pub for a pint, that's your prerogative 🍺.

I do have to chuckle at Alistair Cant's story about Bodø though - who knew Norway had a Champions League team? 🤦‍♂️ But seriously, some of these stories are just ridiculous. I mean, Beth from Wivenhoe trying to reserve double rooms at Premier Inn because she wants to rough it with her wife? Like, what's next? Camping in the pub garden? 🌳.

😂 I mean, come on 13 miles is like running from one end of London to another... like, what's next? Trying to do a marathon while serving pints? 🤣 That Coach and Horses pub has got some crazy characters, studying bar-stool athletes for training? 🏃‍♂️ Only in the UK, right?! And Alistair Cant trying to run 13 miles just because Bodø won the Champions League? I'd love to see that 😂 what a wild goose chase!

🏃‍♂️ I think its crazy how people find different ways to train for those long runs. Like, Beth booking double rooms at Premier Inn is genius! 😂 I mean, who needs a hotel room when you've got the gym and your own two feet, right? 🤷‍♀️ Bren trying to rough it in the pub toilets was not funny though... 👎

omg I'm literally dying over here 🤣... who knew pub-goers were such marathon runners?! I mean, I've seen some crazy stuff online, but this is on another level 😂. I can already imagine Barry Glendenning pouring over past patron forms like a detective trying to solve a crime 🕵️‍♂️. And poor Bren Pointer... roughing it at Premier Inn? 😂 what's next?!

🤔 I mean think about it... we're all drawn to these seemingly simple pleasures like pub-going & running, but what does that really say about us? Are we just trying to outrun our own inner demons or finding a sense of community in the chaos? 🏃‍♀️ These people who take on 13 miles are either super dedicated or, you know, slightly unhinged... either way, it's all about pushing past those comfort zones & seeing what we're truly capable of 💪. But at the end of the day, is that really what life's all about?

omg u guys i cant believe ppl r literally doin 13 mile runs in pub crawl events 🤯 like wat's next? maybe 26.4 mile marathons thru the streets of london with a pint break every mile or so 😂💨 and dont even get me started on reserving hotel rooms for ur running buddy lol beth from essex u go girl! i feel u tho, been there done that w/ my own running partner 👯‍♀️🏃‍♀️

🏃‍♂️💨 I'm thinking, what's the big deal? I mean, 13 miles sounds like nothing compared to a road trip 🚗 or hiking in the woods 🌳. People need to chill out 😎 and remember, it's just a run! 🏃‍♀️ But at the same time, I get why some people are all about it 💪. It's like, passion is passionate, you know? 🔥 And those who can handle it should be proud of themselves 👊. Meanwhile, I'll stick to my yoga mat 🧘‍♀️ and a good Netflix binge 😴... no thanks, 13 miles not for me 🙅‍♂️!

Ugh, 13 miles is already crazy enough, why do people need to make it more complicated?! 🤯 Like, yes, some people are into that whole bar-stool athlete thing, but others are taking it WAY too far. I mean, reserving double rooms at Premier Inn just for the sake of running? That's just ridiculous! 😂 And what's with trying to run in places you don't even know, like Bodø? Just get a map and do some prep work, guys! 🗺️ At least Alistair had the sense to appreciate the city after beating his own expectations. Can we just keep it real and make running 13 miles a bit more manageable? 🏃‍♂️💪

I'm actually kinda inspired by these people trying out marathons at pubs. Like, I used to drink beer with friends all the time but never thought of going for a run afterwards lol. But then you read about these people like Beth from Wivenhoe who's reserving hotel rooms just for running 13 miles 🤣, and I'm like "hold up, that's dedication". I think it's great that they're pushing their limits and having fun at the same time 💪. It's a reminder that life's too short to not try new things, right?

I'm low-key impressed by these bar-stool athletes! I mean, some of them are literally out there doing crazy things. I've had my fair share of pub runs, but trying to run 13 miles in a pub is on another level 🏃‍♂️🍺. And I love how they're all supporting each other, even if they're not all doing it for the same reasons.

I think what I find interesting is that some of them are using pubs as their training grounds – which is genius! 🤩 You've got people like Barry Glendenning who's studying the form of past patrons and trying to use that intel to fuel his own runs. And then you've got Beth and Bren, who are just taking it one step at a time (literally!). It's all about finding what works for you, right?

As for me, I think I'll stick to my Sunday roasts and the occasional 5K run... but hey, if running 13 miles in a pub sounds like fun, more power to them! 🍴🏃‍♀️

🏃‍♂️ I mean, think about it... this whole bar-stool athlete thing is like, are we really just talking about people's passion for exercise or is it something more? Like, what drives someone to put themselves through that kind of physical pain and discomfort? Is it the thrill of victory (or even just finishing)? Or is it something deeper? Maybe it's about testing our limits and seeing how far we can push ourselves... but in a weird way, it also feels like we're trying to prove something to ourselves and others. 🤔 Like, are we doing this for the rush or because we genuinely love the feeling of accomplishment? And what does that say about us as humans?

so its like imagine ur on a run and u see this super fit person doin laps at the pub and ur thinkin "wow thats impressive"

but then u start thinkin about people who actually go that far like brend pointer tryna run 13 miles after havin beer n stuff lol

and i feel for ppl like barry glendenning studyin past patrons like they got a formula 1 pit crew or somethin

but at the same time its cool to see peeps pushin limits in their own way like beth reservin rooms @ premier inn lol

anyway just one thing: if u r gonna run 13 miles, might as well do it at bodø norway
