Detroit fire official undermines 2008 murder case in surfaced video - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit Fire Commissioner Charles Simms has confirmed for the first time that he conducted an interview with Mario Willis, a man who claims to have been wrongfully convicted of murdering Walter Harris, a firefighter who died in a blaze in 2008. The video of the interview, which was released during a hearing in Willis's case, shows Simms asking Willis about his activities on the night of the fire and validating some of the information he had previously told police.

Willis, who is currently serving a prison sentence for second-degree murder, claims that the interview with Simms supports his claim of innocence. However, prosecutors have argued that the interview was not disclosed to Willis's defense team during his trial in 2010, which could be considered a Brady violation.

Simms had previously refused to discuss the video with Metro Times in 2022, and even after WDIV Channel 4 reported on Willis's possible innocence, Simms remained silent. It was only when the prosecutor asked him to testify at the hearing that he finally acknowledged conducting the interview.

The release of the video has raised questions about the handling of the case by the Detroit Fire Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. In 2023, the Conviction Integrity Unit reviewed Willis's case but denied his request for exoneration.

Willis claims that the prosecution rested on a false narrative during his trial, citing a statement made by the prosecutor that he had tried to deceive the court by telling Megan, his wife, to lie on the witness stand. This, combined with the fact that the fire was an accident and not arson, has led Willis's supporters to believe that he is innocent.

The case highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the justice system, particularly when it comes to cases involving law enforcement and prosecutors. The release of the video has brought new attention to Willis's case, and his supporters are hoping that it will lead to a re-examination of his conviction.

"Actions speak louder than words," ๐Ÿ’ฌ

It's crazy how this interview came out of nowhere, especially after all those years of silence from Simms ๐Ÿคฏ. The fact that Willis is now claiming his innocence is definitely something to consider, and the prosecution's side hasn't given us much to think about yet ๐Ÿ˜•. What's really puzzling here is that there's still no clear explanation for why Simms kept mum all these years... was he hiding something? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿ˜• This whole thing is just mind-blowing... I mean, how can you trust the justice system when something like this happens? The fact that Commissioner Simms finally came forward with the interview after being asked to testify at the hearing, and only then, raises so many questions about what's really going on. ๐Ÿ’” The lack of transparency is staggering, especially considering the severity of the conviction. It's not just Mario Willis's case, though - this could be a systemic issue that needs to be addressed. We need to make sure that our justice system values truth over conviction and doesn't sweep mistakes under the rug. ๐Ÿš”

I'm thinking the DPD should be totally transparent about their investigations, you know? Like, this whole thing with Mario Willis being wrongly convicted is super fishy ๐Ÿค”. I mean, it's not like they're hiding something or anything, but at least Simms came forward now and acknowledged conducting that interview. Still, it's kinda weird that he kept it under wraps all these years... maybe there's more to the story than we know ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that they reviewed Willis's case in 2023 but still didn't give him a free pass is just plain unfair ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The justice system needs some serious shake-up, you feel? Maybe now, with this new video out, we'll get some real answers and see if Mario can finally clear his name ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿค” I'm shocked that it took so long for this interview to be released ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. It's like they were trying to keep the truth under wraps ๐Ÿ”’. And now that it is out, it raises so many questions about the whole process ๐Ÿ‘€. How did Simms not disclose this during Willis's trial? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ That's a serious Brady violation right there ๐Ÿšซ. And what was going on behind closed doors at the DFP and Prosecutor's office? ๐Ÿค This is a clear case of justice being served... eventually โฐ. The fact that they finally acknowledged conducting the interview after all these years just goes to show how messed up the system can be ๐Ÿ™„. We need more transparency, not less ๐Ÿ”ฆ. And it's about time someone started holding our law enforcement and prosecutors accountable for their actions ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ”ฅ this is crazy! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ผ I mean, a fire commissioner finally comes forward with new info on a murder case after 12 years? ๐Ÿคฏ That's like, totally unacceptable. ๐Ÿ˜ณ The fact that prosecutors didn't disclose the video to Willis's defense team in his trial is a major red flag ๐Ÿšจ. And now we're seeing that maybe, just maybe, he was wrongly convicted ๐Ÿค”. I'm not saying he's innocent or anything, but you gotta wonder... ๐Ÿ˜• It's like, the justice system needs some serious TLC โค๏ธ. More transparency, more accountability... it's time for a change ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’• Oh my gosh, I'm just so glad to see this new development in Mario Willis's case!!! ๐Ÿคž The fact that the video of the interview between Simms and Willis is out now is like, totally amazing news! ๐Ÿ’ฅ It's heartbreaking that he was wrongly convicted in the first place, but it's like, finally some truth is coming out! ๐ŸŒŸ And I'm all about transparency and accountability in the justice system - it's time for us to know what really happened. ๐Ÿ’ฏ Let's hope this new evidence helps clear his name and he gets the justice he deserves! ๐Ÿ˜Š

this is crazy, fire commissioner just breaks silence after all these years ๐Ÿคฏ and now we're talking about brady violations and justice system accountability... it's wild how one video can bring new light to an old case ๐Ÿ”ฆ. i'm not saying mario willis is innocent or guilty, but it's clear that there were some holes in the original investigation. the fact that simms validated some of willis's story after initially denying any involvement is just suspicious ๐Ÿค‘. what i want to see now is how this all plays out in court... justice should be served, no matter what side you're on ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

man... this whole thing is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ like what's going on with the justice system? i remember reading about this guy Walter Harris who died in a fire back in 2008... wasn't there something weird about that case from the start? and now we're hearing that Mario Willis was wrongfully convicted of murder too ๐Ÿš’. it's wild that the fire commissioner only just confirmed doing an interview with Willis after some prodding from prosecutors... what were they hiding all this time? ๐Ÿค”

omg this is wild ๐Ÿคฏ like what even is going on in detroit?! so mario willis is claiming he was wrongly convicted of murder but now fire commissioner charles simms is saying he actually did the interview with him and it validates some of the stuff he said... but there's still all these questions about why this came out now lol. i'm low-key invested in his case at this point ๐Ÿค” is it possible that simms was trying to hide something from the public and only spoke up when prosecutors asked him to testify? idk, but this whole thing just feels super suspicious ๐Ÿค‘ anyway, gotta give props to willis for sticking by his story even after all these years ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I'm not sure if this is gonna be a long shot but I think it's worth a try... what if we just assume that Mario Willis was indeed wrongly convicted? I mean, think about it, he's been in prison for 15+ years and now we're seeing some pretty suspicious stuff. The fact that the prosecution had him lock up without disclosing this interview with Simms is pretty sketchy... but here's the thing - even if we don't know all the details, shouldn't our justice system be trying to figure out what really happened instead of just resting on a narrative? I'm not saying it's easy, but if we want to see some real change, we need to keep pushing for transparency and accountability... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ’ฅ This guy's been wrongfully convicted for 15 years? Come on! ๐Ÿ™„

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fire was an accident, not arson... how did they spin this?

๐Ÿ˜ก Prosecutors think they're above the law just 'cause they're wearing badges...

๐Ÿค Simms is finally talking... too little, too late?

๐Ÿ’ผ Transparency and accountability? We need more of that in the justice system!

๐Ÿšซ Brady violations are a real thing... can't believe it took this long to come to light.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ Wayne County Prosecutor's Office needs a serious overhaul... this is not right!

just saw this news about Mario Willis... feel bad for guy ๐Ÿค• he's been in prison for 15 years for something he might not even done ๐Ÿš” accidents happen, but justice shouldn't be served by lies or manipulation ๐Ÿ’” hope the truth finally comes out and he gets a fair shot at clearing his name ๐ŸŒŸ

I'm loving this! Finally some truth coming out about Mario Willis's wrongful conviction ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, who hasn't been in a situation where they feel like their freedom is being taken away? It's crazy that the Detroit Fire Commissioner was so tight-lipped about the interview until it had to do with him testifying at the hearing lol.

I'm all for transparency and accountability in our justice system - it's what keeps us safe, right? ๐Ÿค The fact that a Conviction Integrity Unit even reviewed Willis's case but still denied his request for exoneration just shows how flawed the system can be sometimes. I hope this new attention will lead to some real changes.

I've been following this case and it's wild that Willis was convicted of second-degree murder when he claimed innocence. What really gets me is the fact that a statement made by the prosecutor about trying to deceive the court could have changed everything ๐Ÿค”. It just goes to show how much power and influence prosecutors have over our justice system.

It's time for some real reform, you know? A second look at Willis's conviction might be just what he needs. Fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž that this will lead to his freedom one day!

omg can't believe the fire commissioner waited this long to even address wilsis case like what were they hiding lol. anyway, now that the cat's out of the bag so to speak, i'm curious if simms knew about wilis innocence all along and just chose not to spill the tea ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ or is this just a last minute attempt to save his rep? gotta say though, brady violation much? 2022 you were super shady, simms
