Don Bradman: Australian batter's Baggy Green cap sets record fee at auction

The record price of A$460,000 (£232,000) for a piece of cricket memorabilia has been set at an auction. The item in question is a "baggy green" cap worn by the legendary Australian cricketer Don Bradman during a 1947-48 home Test series against India.

Bradman was widely regarded as cricket's greatest-ever batter and averaged 99.94 across his 52-match Test career. The baggy green cap, which features 'D.G. Bradman' and 'S.W. Sohoni' on the inside, is one of eleven known to exist and has never been publicly displayed.

The cap was given to Indian cricketer Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni by Bradman as a gift, but it remained with his family for 75 years before being sold at auction. The sale price includes a 16.5% buyer's premium of A$75,900, which brings the total to A$535,900.

Bradman played his last series on home soil against India in 1947-48, scoring 715 runs in six innings at an average of 178.75 and securing a 4-0 victory for Australia. The series was Bradman's last international match before his retirement from cricket.

The baggy green cap is worn by Australian players during Test cricket, but players are now given new caps for each series they play, with debutants receiving one that they keep throughout their careers.

Bradman died aged 92 in 2001. The Sohoni family has kept the cap in good condition and only allowed a select few to view it before its sale at auction.

Yooo 🤩 I'm low-key shocked by this record price! A$460,000 for a cricket cap is wild 😲. I mean, Don Bradman was like a god on the pitch, right? 😂 The fact that only 11 of these caps exist and it's been kept in secret for so long makes it even more special 🤫. I'm glad the Sohoni family decided to pass it down instead of selling it for a quick buck 💸. It's a piece of cricket history now 👏.

🤑 I mean, can you believe this record price for a cricket memorabilia? A$460,000 is crazy! It's like, the baggy green cap is super rare and only eleven exist, so that's gotta be worth a pretty penny. Don Bradman was literally a legend on the cricket field, averaged 99.94 across 52 matches, talk about impressive! And it's even crazier that this cap has never been publicly displayed before... I guess it's like a piece of history or something. The fact that it went to auction and broke the record price is just mind-blowing 🤯. The Sohoni family has kept it in good condition, which is awesome, 'cause now we can all learn from it 😊

Just saw this news about Don Bradman's iconic baggy green cap going up for auction 🤯😲. I mean, A$460k is crazy! It's like, you can buy a whole bunch of flats in Sydney with that kinda cash 💸. But seriously, the history behind it is so cool - Bradman was literally the greatest cricketer of all time, and to think this cap was worn by him during his last series against India is just mind-blowing 🤯. The fact that it's been hidden away for 75 years before being sold is just genius - like a secret treasure trove 🔒. Can't wait to see where it ends up next 👀.

Man, this is crazy 😮 I mean, I was watching cricket matches on TV with my grandpa back in the day when Don Bradman played, and he'd tell me stories about how great he was 🤩 Now, to see a piece of his memorabilia go for that price is just mind-blowing 💸 The fact that it's been kept by the Sohoni family all these years and never publicly displayed makes it even more special 🎨 I remember watching old VHS tapes of Bradman's matches at my friend's house, we'd try to imagine what it was like to be a pro cricketer back then 🏟️ It's amazing how much history is hidden in these small items, you know? 😊

Just saw this crazy news about Don Bradman's baggy green cap goin' for like, a gazillion dollars 🤑😲. I mean, can u believe someone paid over half a million Aussie bucks just to own a piece of cricket history? It's wild thinkin' about how rare that cap is - only 11 known exist and it's never been shown to the public before... what's next, sellin' the moon? 🌕😂. But hey, I guess that's what happens when u got somethin' as iconic as Don Bradman on your team 🎯.

omg can u believe this baggy green cap sold for like over half million aussies lol what's crazy is it was just given away by don bradman as a gift, no idea how much more valuable it would've been if it was still with him irl i mean sriranga sohoni should be super rich rn idk how the sohoni family kept it in good condition for 75 years though must've been careful about keeping it from prying eyes anyway can u imagine owning a piece of cricket history like that? 🤯💸

just mind blown 🤯, A$535,900 for some cricket cap is crazy! you'd think someone's life story or achievement would be worth more than that. i mean don't get me wrong bradman was an legend and all but still i gotta wonder what others could've fetched that kind of money. i guess it's just the nostalgia factor that drives up the price, or maybe people love the idea of owning a piece of cricket history? 🤷‍♂️ anyway, pretty cool to see how much the Sohoni family's treasured possession sold for!

🤩 Can you believe the price for this legendary cap?! A$460,000 is insane! I mean, I get that Don Bradman was basically God on the cricket field, but still... 😲 It's not just about the value of the item, it's about the history and the fact that it belonged to a true legend. The Sohoni family did the right thing by keeping it in good condition all these years 🙏. I wonder what kind of offer they got from other collectors before this auction? Did they know it was going to go for so much?! 🤑
