EU designates Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation

European Union designates Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as global terrorist organisation, slams brutal repression of protesters.

The European Union has formally designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a global terrorist organisation, citing the regime's "brutal repression" of protesters. The move is seen as a significant escalation in pressure on the Iranian government, following years of debate over whether to label the elite paramilitary force as such.

The designation has sparked widespread criticism from human rights groups and Western governments, who have long accused the IRGC of playing a key role in suppressing peaceful protests in Iran. "Repression cannot go unanswered," said Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief. "Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise."

The listing also includes 15 Iranian government officials and six organisations on the EU sanctions list for their role in "serious human rights violations". The move is seen as a major blow to Iran's diplomatic efforts, with many countries having previously resisted labelling the regime's state bodies as terrorist organisations.

The designation has sparked outrage from Iranian authorities, who have denounced it as a "major strategic mistake" and accused the EU of fuelling tensions in the region. Meanwhile, Russia has warned that any military action against Iran could lead to chaos and destabilise the security system throughout the region.

The move is also seen as significant for the United Kingdom, which has been under pressure from human rights groups to label the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. The UK Foreign Office has promised to draw up new legislation to allow it to do so without needing to designate the group as such, citing concerns that such a move might trigger the expulsion of British diplomats in Tehran.

The designation is also seen as a key moment in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, with Russia warning that any military action against Iran could lead to "very dangerous consequences" for regional security. The move has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups and Western governments, who have long accused the IRGC of playing a key role in suppressing peaceful protests in Iran.

come on guys let's calm down 🙏... i mean think about it, the eu's move is meant to highlight the brutal suppression of protesters in iran 🤕... it's not like they're trying to start a war or something 🚫... it's just a way to show that the international community doesn't tolerate this kind of thing 💪... and yeah it might put pressure on iran, but that's not always a bad thing 🔥... sometimes it's what people need to wake up and smell the coffee ☕️... let's focus on promoting human rights and freedom instead of just reacting with anger 😒

its crazy how this is happening... like 5 years ago i was living in turkey and i saw what irgc did to protesters with my own eyes 🤯... they just walk around like nothing happened, like they're above the law. but now the eu finally stepped up and called them out. it's not about being a terrorist organisation or not, its about respecting human rights and treating people with dignity. i feel bad for the families of those who were killed by irgc... this move is a start, but lets hope it leads to more concrete actions against them 🤞

🤯 just saw the news about EU designating Iran's IRGC as global terrorist org 🚨 I'm low-key hyped 😎 but also kinda concerned about how this is gonna play out in the region 🌍 Russia's warning about chaos and destabilization is giving me major anxiety 😬 but at the same time, it's long overdue that we're holding Iran accountable for their human rights abuses 💪 EU's Kaja Kallas saying "repression cannot go unanswered" is giving me LIFE 👊 what do you guys think? 🤔

I think the EU's decision is super reasonable 🤔, I mean, who doesn't want brutal repression to stop? But at the same time, I'm worried that it might lead to more conflict and chaos in the region 💥. Like, what if Russia or Iran retaliates against the EU or other Western countries? That would be a total disaster 😬. On the other hand, the EU's decision is kinda necessary, you know? The IRGC has been playing with fire for years, killing protesters and whatnot 🤕. Maybe now they'll finally have to answer for their actions. But, like, how will this affect the lives of ordinary Iranians? Will it just fuel more resentment against the West? 🤷‍♂️ Ugh, I don't know man 😅...

omg, this is so dramatic 😱 Iran's gonna have a field day if they start getting hit with these sanctions lol 15 officials already on the list? that's like, super serious talk 🤯 Russia's warning about military action tho, that's just scary 💥 i mean, Kallas says repression can't be ignored, but what's the EU planning to do next? is this gonna lead to a war? so many questions and not much answers 🤔
