European Union says video app TikTok must change ‘addictive’ design

EU Slams TikTok for 'Addictive' Design, Demands Changes

In a move aimed at protecting minors from compulsive social media use, European Union authorities have accused video-sharing platform TikTok of breaching online content regulations. The commission has warned the company to overhaul its "addictive" design features that allegedly encourage excessive app usage among young users.

According to the EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen, these features - including infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and personalized recommendation algorithms - contribute significantly to addiction. This addiction poses serious risks to minors' mental health and wellbeing.

"The measures that TikTok has in place are simply not enough," Thomas Regnier, a European Commission spokesperson, stated. "These features lead to the compulsive use of the app, especially for our kids, and this poses major risks to their mental health and wellbeing."

In response to these findings, the EU regulator threatened TikTok with a potential fine as high as 6 percent of its global turnover, which is owned by ByteDance. The investigation was first opened in February 2024 after citing alarming statistics compiled during the probe.

TikTok vehemently disputed the commission's preliminary findings, calling them "categorically false and entirely meritless." In response to these criticisms, TikTok pledged to challenge the EU's conclusions and take necessary steps to change its design to protect minors.

omg are u kiddin me?? the eu is always so uptight about everything 🙄 like whats wrong with a lil infinite scroll? it's not like they're tryin to ruin ur life or sumthin 😂 but for real tho, its kinda sus that tiktok is gettin dragged over this. didnt they just overhaul their algorithm like 2 yrs ago? 🤔 anyway, i think the eu should chill a bit and focus on somethin else 🤑 btw, dont even get me started on how much time i waste on tiktok 😳

🤔 I think it's pretty reasonable that the EU is cracking down on TikTok over this addictive design. I mean, have you tried using the app? It's super easy to get sucked into scrolling through videos for hours - it's like they're designed to be super engaging! 😂 And with all those push notifications, it's not hard to see how it could lead to excessive use among kids. 📱 As a parent myself, I'd want to make sure my little ones are safe from that kind of thing. Maybe TikTok just needs to dial back the features a notch and prioritize user safety? 💡

omg u gotta believe what they're saying about tiktok 🤯 like how can a 10 yr old not put down their phone? it's literally impossible lol 😂 my niece is literally addicted to that app and I'm like "girl, you need to take a break" but she won't listen 🙄. I don't know what the big deal is tho, my kids are fine 🙅‍♂️ (I have 2 of them btw). but idk maybe it's just bc they're not making those other apps as "engaging" 😒 like tiktok knows how to get u hooked and now they gotta change their game 🔄. I'm kinda glad the eu is on top of this tho, we should def protect our kids from themselves 💕. btw has anyone tried to delete tiktok on their phone? it's super hard rn 😩

omg u guys like i cant even... so tiktok is literally addicted now lol but seriously tho eu is on their case cuz they think their design features r creating a major problem with kids & mental health. idk how true this is tho, i mean dont get me wrong if its true we gotta be all about protecting those young minds 🤯💔

i heard tiktok disputed the findings like whoa what r they hiding tho? fine or not but we should keep an eye on this cuz if eu says its true its gotta mean something 💁‍♀️. i'm curious to see how this plays out - will tiktok make some changes or just pretend everything is ok 🤷‍♀️?

I'm so not surprised 🙄. It's like they knew this was coming. All these features on TikTok are designed to be super engaging, I mean who doesn't love scrolling through endless videos of cats in sunglasses? 😹 And now the EU is all like "oh no, our kids might get addicted"? It's a bit late for that, don't you think? 🙃 The EU's always so quick to jump on the bandwagon and start regulating everything. Like they're not making a living off of this already... 6% fine sounds like a pretty small price to pay if it means keeping our kids safe from themselves 😒. I bet TikTok just knows it can afford it anyway 🤑

imho, tiktoks gotta be super responsible here 😒 they cant just ignore whats good for kids mental health... idk how else they can prove they care about this tho? maybe a better idea is like facebook and instagram which already have some sorta parental controls in place 🤔 anyway, i hope the EU gets to the bottom of it 👍

I feel bad for TikTok 😐. I mean, they're just trying to keep up with the algorithm game and make their app more engaging. The EU is being kinda harsh, if you ask me 🤔. They need to understand that TikTok's got a huge user base across the globe and it's not like they're intentionally trying to ruin kids' mental health 🙅‍♂️.

I think the EU should focus on educating parents and guardians about social media safety instead of going after companies for their design choices 📚. It's all about balance, you know? TikTok can't just change overnight, but at the same time, they need to make some adjustments to keep up with the EU's new rules 🤯.

Maybe we should be looking at this from a different angle? Like, what if TikTok's design is actually helping kids discover new content and connect with others in a positive way? 🌈 It's all about context, right? 😊

🤔 so i think this is kinda weird. like, we know tiktok can be super addictive but come on, 6% of their turnover as a fine? that's like, a lot of money 😅. i mean, the eu just wants to protect our youngins from mental health issues and all that, but does it have to be so strict? 🤷‍♀️

i'm not saying tiktok is innocent or anything, but this kinda sounds like they're being bullied by the eu. 🚫 "categorically false and entirely meritless" though? i don't know about that 😒. it's gotta be a bit more nuanced than that.

anyway, i think it's all good to have some guidelines in place for social media companies, but maybe we can find a happy medium here? 🤝 like, tiktok can make some changes and the eu can have some faith in them. 🙏

I think this is a super valid concern 🤔📊 The algorithm they use on TikTok can be kinda sneaky 😳. I mean, who needs that many notifications?! 📱 And infinite scroll? It's like, I know it's fun to keep scrolling, but come on! 🤯 Anyway, I think the EU is right to crack down on this stuff 💸. We need to make sure our teens are safe online and not getting sucked into these addictive loops 🔄. Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to put TikTok down? 📵😩 Maybe we can all learn from each other's strategies for staying mindful of screen time 🤝.

Here's a simple mind map of my thoughts:
```
+---------------+
| Screen Time |
+---------------+
|
| Addictive
v
+-----------------------+ +------------------------+
| Algorithm Design | | Notifications Galore |
+-----------------------+ +------------------------+
| |
| Infinite Scroll | Personalized Recommendations
v v
+-------------------------------+ +-------------------------------+
| Teens Get Hooked | | Mental Health at Risk |
+-------------------------------+ +-------------------------------+
```
I'm no expert, but I think we need to be more aware of how our fave apps are designed 📊👀

idk what's the point of making tiktok more user-friendly for us old folks who already have social media addiction issues... they're just gonna make it easier for the kids to get sucked in 🤷‍♀️ anyway, like how's a fine gonna stop someone from using an app they love? and 6% is kinda steep, tbh.

I think it's kinda weird that they're saying TikTok is too addictive but at the same time they want us to keep using it 🤔... I mean, what's up with that? It's like they're against addiction but still want to control how we use social media 🙄. And 6% fine for ByteDance? That's a lot of pressure 😬... But on the other hand, if TikTok is making us add up hours of our lives scrolling through videos, shouldn't that be a problem? 🤷‍♀️ I don't know what to think about this one...

I'm low-key shocked that TikTok got slammed by the EU for their addictive design features 🤯. Like, I get it, excessive screen time ain't good for our youngins' mental health, but come on, can't we just be chill about it? 😂 Seriously though, infinite scroll and push notifications are designed to keep us hooked, and it's hard to resist that FOMO vibe 📱. But I do think the EU is onto something here - like, shouldn't our platforms prioritize our well-being over engagement metrics? 💭 Maybe TikTok can revamp their design to be more mindful of user behavior and minimize those addictive features 👍. Either way, this investigation has got me thinking about how we all need to take a step back from our screens and live life 🌞.

omg like I know tiktok can be super addictive 😂 but I think it's cool that they're getting called out for it! the eu is literally looking out for our mental health 🤝 and if they're worried about our teens being glued to their screens, then we should probs listen 🤔. maybe this will be a good thing? like, can't have too much self-regulation in the digital world, right? 🤷‍♀️ btw, what's the worst that could happen if tiktok does get fined? 🤑 6% of their turnover is still way less than what some big corps spend on ad campaigns 💸

omg is this real? like they're saying tiktok is addictive now? 🤯 i use it all the time and i know it can be super hard to put down lol but like come on who doesn't love scrolling through vids of dogs in outfits or doing silly dances? 🐶💃 anyway back to the point, i feel bad for tiktok tho, they're just trying to make money and provide a service. shouldn't we just let people use social media responsibly instead of slapping them with fines? 😒

I'm low-key worried about this whole thing 🤔. Like, I know the EU is just trying to look out for kids' mental health, but come on... if they're really concerned that TikTok's addictive features are gonna ruin some young minds, shouldn't they be looking at their own stuff too? I mean, have you seen Facebook or Instagram's algorithms lately? Those things are straight-up designed to suck your soul dry 📱💔. And what's with the 6% fine threat? Like, that's not exactly a strong incentive for TikTok to make some changes... they're probably just gonna appeal it and drag this out for years 😒

The European Union's decision to scrutinize TikTok over its alleged 'addictive' features seems like a prudent move 🤔. The commission's concerns about the impact of excessive social media usage on minors' mental health are well-founded, especially with the alarming statistics cited during the probe. I think it's reasonable for the EU regulator to demand changes in TikTok's design to mitigate these risks 💡.

While TikTok has disputed the findings, I believe the commission's preliminary assessment is grounded in empirical evidence 📊. The features they've identified as problematic - infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and personalized recommendation algorithms - do have a proven track record of contributing to compulsive behavior 😬.

It'll be interesting to see how TikTok responds to these criticisms and whether their proposed changes can effectively address the concerns raised by the EU 🤞.

ohmygosh 😍 i totally get why the eu is cracking down on tiktok - those features are SOooo addictive 🤯 my sister's kids (who are literally 10 & 12) can't even put their phones down and it's getting super concerning 💔 i feel like we need to be more mindful of how our kids use these platforms and make sure they're not negatively impacting their mental health 🙏 maybe tiktok should take some inspiration from instagram's "take a break" feature 🤝📸

omg I know what they mean by addictive now 🤯 TikTok is literally so hard to put down! I mean I'm guilty of it too, my fave creators always have new vids when I least expect it 😂 but I guess that's the problem - it's designed to be super engaging. I don't think a 6% fine is enough tho 🤑 like, shouldn't they make some serious changes? My younger cousins can't even put their phones down and it's freaking out parents everywhere 👀
