Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin conceded defeat in Sunday's parliamentary election, with the opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claiming victory. The NCP secured 48 seats in parliament, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats and Marin's Social Democrats on 43 seats.

According to election data, the NCP has led polls for almost two years, although its lead had melted away in recent months. Its leader, Petteri Orpo, vowed to "fix Finland" and curb spending, which he claims has reached unsustainable levels. Orpo said the NCP would negotiate with all groups to obtain a majority in parliament.

Marin, 37, who is considered a millennial role model for progressive new leaders, faced criticism for her partying and government's public spending. She called the Finns Party "openly racist" during a debate in January, which they rejected. Marin conceded defeat and vowed that her Social Democrats would govern with the NCP but not with the Finns Party.

The opposition party has promised to curb deficit spending and reduce public debt, which has reached over 70% of GDP since Marin took office in 2019. The NCP's main goal is to reduce "harmful" immigration from developing countries outside the European Union and implement austerity policies.

Marin's era as prime minister was expected to end following the election. Most notable of her foreign policy actions has been her push for Finland to seek NATO membership in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The country is now on the verge of joining the Western defense alliance after all 30 members approved its accession.

The outcome of the election marks a significant shift in Finnish politics, with the NCP and Finns Party presenting themselves as alternatives to Marin's centrist government.

Ugh 🤦‍♂️ I'm so over this election drama already! Finland's gone from being that cool, progressive country to...I don't know...a bunch of right-wing folks trying to reduce public debt and immigration? 🙄 It's all about cutting spending and austerity policies now. What's the point of living in a utopia if you can just go back to being all boring and stuff? 😴 The NCP's promise to 'fix Finland' is pretty vague, if you ask me. Who gets to decide what 'fixed' means anyway? 🤷‍♂️ And don't even get me started on Petteri Orpo's 'openly racist' comment...major backpedaling needed there 👎

I feel like this might be kinda tough for Sanna Marin 😔. She was always seen as so young and inspiring for her role, but now it looks like she's facing some tough criticism from different sides 🤝. It's crazy that the NCP is trying to promise big changes with their austerity policies, though 📉. I'm a bit worried about how this might affect immigration in Finland - I get why they want to control spending and all, but don't they think that could lead to some problems for people who are already struggling? 💔

🤔 so finland just had an election and it looks like the ncp is winning 🏆 but i'm kinda surprised cuz they've been saying they wanna reduce immigration and stuff... meanwhile marin was all about trying to join nato 🚀 what does that even mean for finland's future? 😕 it seems like they're trying to shift away from marin's centrist gov, but idk if that's a good idea, cuz she did some pretty progressive things 💡

just heard about this election 🤔🇫🇮 - think it's gonna be interesting to see how Orpo & Co implement their austerity measures... been critical of public spending in the past, but will they actually make a difference? 🤑 wonder what'll happen to immigration policies too... seems like Finland's got some big shoes to fill after Marin's time in office 😅

I just got back from the most random hike this weekend 🏞️ and it made me think about how Finland is like that one really cool park with lots of trails you can take on a whim... but sometimes the views are so beautiful they distract you from noticing any actual progress 😂. Like, I'm sure Petteri Orpo's promise to "fix Finland" is all well and good, but what if we're just going in circles like that one trail that looks great on paper but ends up being a slog? 🤔 Anyway, congrats to Sanna Marin for taking the high road (literally and figuratively) after the election – I'm sure she'll still make an impact, even if it's not as leader of the Social Democrats 🙏.

Just when I thought Finland was done with the drama... 🙄 And now they're trying to fix everything? Like, I get it, spending is high, but what's a little austerity gonna do? We all know the Finns Party isn't exactly known for their progressive views on immigration. Guess we'll see how this whole "fixing Finland" thing plays out... 🤔

Just got word that Finland's got a new gov 🇫🇮! Petteri Orpo's right-wing National Coalition Party took the win, ahead of the Finns Party. It's like they were saying "enough" to Sanna Marin's partying ways and excessive spending 😂. Now they're promising to cut deficit spending and reduce public debt - not exactly what I'd call "fixing Finland". Also, their stance on immigration is super concerning 🤔. As if we didn't have enough issues with global warming and climate change...anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months 👀. The fact that they're trying to distance themselves from Marin's "centrist" gov is pretty telling too 🤷‍♀️. Time will tell if this new gov can live up to their promises 💪!

so yeah i think this election result makes sense considering finland's economic struggles 🤔. the ncp's promise to curb deficit spending and reduce public debt is definitely something people want to hear. and let's be real, marin's government has been criticized for its handling of spending and partying scandals 🍻. but it's also worth noting that marin's progressive policies have been popular among younger generations 💚.

the finns party's stance on immigration is also an interesting dynamic 🌎. while it's true that some might see them as "openly racist", i think it's more complex than that 🤝. the ncp's goal of reducing "harmful" immigration is likely driven by concerns about public resources and infrastructure.

it's going to be interesting to see how marin and her social democrats navigate their new relationship with the ncp in parliament 🤝. and let's not forget that finland's joining NATO is a major foreign policy win for marin's government 🌟. overall, this election result feels like a shift towards more conservative policies, but with some caveats 😐

omg u guys can't believe what just happened 🤯! Sanna Marin is OUT 🚫👋 and I'm literally still trying to process it all 😂. she was such an inspiring leader for the youth (I'm 23 btw) but i guess her partying ways didn't help her out in this election 🎉.

i'm kinda glad the NCP took over now tho 🤔, they have some decent ideas about curbing spending and reducing public debt 💸. not to mention their stance on immigration is kinda reasonable 🌎. ofc there's always gonna be haters calling them "openly racist" but i think it's time for Finland to have an adult conversation about borders 🤝.

anywayz, the fact that they're negotiating with other parties to get a majority parliament is super interesting 🤔. maybe we'll see some changes in gov policy now 💥👀

aww man... i feel like marin is gonna be okay tho 🤗 she's still got her social democrats and they're gonna work together with the ncp... it's not like she lost everything 😔 but yeah, the ncp has some pretty radical ideas on immigration and austerity which might make some ppl uncomfortable 🤝 i do think finland needs some changes tho, like reducing public spending... 💸 maybe it's time for a more balanced budget? 📊 anyway, congrats to petteri orpo and his team on their win 😊

.. just read about Finland's parliamentary election results 🤔. Sanna Marin's defeat is a bit of a surprise, considering she was only 37 and seemed so full of energy back in 2019 💪. I mean, you've got to hand it to her for trying new things and pushing for NATO membership – that takes guts! 😊

But, on the other hand, I think it's kinda scary how divisive politics can get, especially with all the rhetoric about "fixing" Finland and curbing spending 📉. You've got a whole generation of young leaders like Marin who were supposed to bring some much-needed fresh air into politics, but ended up being held back by the old guard 😔.

It's interesting that the NCP's Petteri Orpo is promising to tackle public debt and deficit spending – those are some big issues 🤑. And I hope he can deliver on his promises without getting too caught up in all the nationalist rhetoric 🤷‍♀️. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out in Finland 💭.

🤔 so it looks like finland is goin down the path of austerity measures 📉 petteri orpo's promises sound legit but we'll see how he really does it 💪 anyway, i'm curious about marin's departure - will she bounce back or is her politics career over? 🤷‍♀️ on a more serious note, with finland joining nato, what's the plan for their defense strategy 🗺️ should they be lookin out for more conflicts in eastern europe? 💥

so finland just switched from a pro-eu govt to a right-wing one... what does this mean for EU relations? 🤔 the ncp's rhetoric on immigration is pretty sketchy too, like how do they plan to reduce "harmful" immigration? who gets to decide what's 'harmful' anyway? 📊

just saw that sanna marin conceded defeat 🤕 and i gotta say i'm kinda surprised she didn't hold out for longer. i mean, all those partying pics didn't exactly help her case lol. but seriously, the ncp's win makes sense - finns are gettin' tired of all the spending and immigration stuff. plus, they're all about fixin' things, which is a pretty popular platform these days 🤝. marin's on to bigger things tho - she might just end up bein' the nato ambassador 🤫 we'll see how that plays out.

omg can't believe sanna marin lost 😱 she was like my ultimate girl boss lol but i guess you cant win 'em all...anyway its time for a new gov now 🤞 hope petteri orpo is more on point than everyone made him out to be 🤔 the fact that finland is joining nato tho 👊 thats some major world stage stuff! 🌎

awww, sorry to hear that Sanna Marin had such a tough time 🤕... it's like, you put your heart out there and still don't get what you wanted 😔... 2 years of leading the country and this is how it ends? 🤯... i guess sometimes life doesn't go as planned, but she'll bounce back tho 💪...

i feel bad for her tho, all that drama with the Finns Party and the accusations of being "openly racist" must've taken a toll on her mental health 😓... she seems like such a strong leader too 👊... it's like, you're already dealing with so much stress as PM, and then people gotta go after your personal life? 🤷‍♀️...

anywayz, i'm curious to see how this new gov't plays out 🤔... Petteri Orpo seems like a pretty straight-laced dude, but we'll c how he does in practice 😐... hope they can really "fix Finland" tho 💕... the country's been doing alright so far... 🇫🇮

Ugh, this is just great... another right-wing party taking over in Finland 🤦‍♀️. I mean, what's next? They're already talking about curbing "harmful" immigration, which sounds like code for discriminating against people from non-EU countries 🙄. And of course, they have to promise to "fix" the economy and reduce spending... like that's ever gonna happen in Finland 😂.

Sanna Marin was already criticized for her partying habits, but I guess now she's just a failed politician who can't even win an election 🤷‍♀️. And what's with Petteri Orpo saying they'll negotiate with everyone to get a majority? Sounds like empty promises to me 🙄. Mark my words, they'll just make things more difficult for the average Finnish person and line the pockets of their wealthy supporters 💸.

It's all about austerity policies and reducing public debt now... sounds like a recipe for disaster to me 😬. Finland is already struggling with high unemployment rates and low wages... can't they see that cutting spending will only make things worse? 🤦‍♂️ Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out 🎥. Not looking forward to it, tbh 👀.

😐 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... I mean, I knew the NCP was gaining ground but 48 seats is crazy! 🤯 It's like, what happened to Sanna? I feel bad for her, she seemed so young and ambitious, but I guess you can't just party your way through politics forever 😂. Petteri Orpo's promises of "fixing Finland" sound pretty vague to me... how are they gonna actually do it? 🤔
