Francis Buchholz, Scorpions' Hurricane-Rocking Ex-Bassist, Dead at 71

Scorpions Bassist Francis Buchholz Passes Away at 71 After Private Battle with Cancer

Francis Buchholz, the bassist behind Scorpions' iconic hits like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Wind of Change," has died at the age of 71. The musician had been battling cancer privately before his passing, according to a statement from his family.

Throughout his life, Buchholz's commitment to his music was evident in his incredible talent as a bassist. His playing style was instrumental in shaping the band's sound, particularly on tracks like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "No One Like You." Despite being part of a hard-rocking genre known for excess, Buchholz brought restraint and tastefulness to his performances.

Buchholz joined the Scorpions in 1974 and played an integral role in shaping their sound. He studied lighting and engineering at Hannover University before co-founding Rock Sound, a company that provided backlines to bands including the Scorpions.

The combination of Buchholz's rock-solid rhythms, Klaus Meine's powerful vocals, and the band's power chord-mad riffs positioned them for heavy-metal dominance in the 1980s. Each album they released did better than the last in the U.S., with "Love at First Sting" reaching triple-platinum status.

After leaving the Scorpions in 1992, Buchholz pursued other musical endeavors, including touring with former guitarist Uli Jon Roth and joining Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock. He expressed pride in his legacy, helping bring a band from obscurity to international stages.

Buchholz's impact on music will be deeply felt, particularly through the enduring popularity of Scorpions' hits like "Wind of Change," which remains certified double platinum thanks to its international success.

rip francis, man... so many legends passed too soon 🤘 he was the glue that held scorpions together all those years - those basslines still give me chills to this day! I remember being a kid and rocking out to "rock you like a hurricane" with my friends in the car, and francis's playing just brought it all to life 💥 never thought i'd say this but he was one of the most underrated instrumentalists in rock history 🤓 guess that's what happens when u're too talented for ur own good 😂

🤕 That's sad news about Francis Buchholz 🎸. It's crazy how he was battling cancer privately before his passing... I guess that's one thing we should all be grateful for, right? 😔 Anyway, I've always loved the way Scorpions blended rock with a bit of depth and complexity - it made them more than just your average hard-rock band 🤘. And can you believe "Wind of Change" is still getting played everywhere? It's like a time capsule of the 90s 🕰️. As an old-school fan, I'll always appreciate Francis Buchholz's contributions to their sound... now he can finally rock in peace 😎

😔 just heard the news about Francis Buchholz... what a legend on the bass 🎸 his playing was so iconic, still gives me chills listening to 'Rock You Like a Hurricane' 🤘 always wondered how he managed to bring such restraint and tastefulness to that band's sound, they were basically all about excess and loud guitars 🤯 but Francis brought some serious class and musicianship to the table. also lovingly sad to hear he went private with his cancer fight, hope we can learn from the lessons of living a full life and not shying away from talking openly about health issues 💕
