Historic winter storm kills several, causes mass travel disruption across US

A Devastating Winter Storm Brings Widespread Disruption Across the US

At least a dozen people have lost their lives in the midst of a catastrophic winter storm that has paralyzed much of the United States, leaving millions without power and rendering roads impassable. The tempestuous system, fueled by an arctic air mass, has brought severe cold temperatures, snow, sleet, and freezing rain to wide swaths of the country.

The full force of the storm was most notably felt in the US South, where over 840,000 customers were left without electricity at one point. Tennessee reported more than 300,000 outages, while Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia each had over 100,000 power outages. Authorities warned that treacherous cold temperatures could set records, posing an extraordinary threat to life.

The storm's impact was most pronounced in the Northeast, where cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston were hit with heavy snowfall and sleet. Several states of emergency have been declared, including Washington, which experienced a blanket of several inches of snow on sidewalks and roads.

More than 19,000 flights into and out of the US had been canceled since Saturday, with Flightaware.com tracking over 20,000 scrapped flights to date. President Donald Trump issued words of caution via his Truth Social platform, urging Americans to "stay safe" and "stay warm."

The storm's formation is linked to a polar vortex, an arctic air mass that normally forms a relatively compact system but can morph into a more oval shape, sending cold air spilling across North America. Climate scientists warn that increasing frequency of such disruptions may be linked to climate change, although the debate remains unsettled and natural variability plays a significant role.

Meanwhile, President Trump took issue with global warming, questioning its relevance in light of the current extreme weather event. "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING??" he posted on social media.

The National Weather Service warned that heavy ice could cause long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely hazardous travel conditions. Authorities issued life-threatening cold warnings, particularly in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where wind chill lows were forecast to plummet to extremes under -50F (-45C). Such temperatures can cause frostbite within minutes.

The full extent of the storm's impact is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: this winter storm has brought widespread disruption and death across the US.

🌨️ I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, this winter storm is a nightmare! 🀯 At least 12 people lost their lives already, and millions are struggling with no power or being stuck on the roads. The South is getting hammered, especially Tennessee where over 300k outages happened πŸŒͺ️. Climate change is definitely making these types of extreme weather events more frequent... it's hard to deny that connection πŸ’”. Meanwhile, President Trump is trying to downplay it and make a joke about global warming... come on, man! πŸ˜’ The real damage is still being felt, and I hope the US can rally together to support those affected by this disaster πŸ’•.

just had to watch a clip of snow being cleared from streets in NYC... felt like i was in a scene from a movie 🌨️. i'm all for some winter fun, but 12 people dead? that's just brutal. power outages are one thing, but this kind of cold is just crazy. and now trump's going on about global warming? what a joke πŸ˜‚. climate change or not, we gotta be prepared for more extreme weather like this. the science isn't in debate mode when it comes to this stuff. my only hope is that people are staying safe & warm πŸ πŸ’‘

OMG, I'm literally shook by all these power outages in the South πŸ€―πŸ’‘. 840k customers without electricity is crazy! And with the temps dropping to -50F, I hope everyone is staying safe indoors ⚠️πŸ”₯. The whole storm seems so unpredictable and intense, like it's a real-life video game 😲. I mean, I've heard of polar vortexes before but this is on another level ❄️. Climate change is definitely playing a role in these extreme weather events and we need to keep talking about it πŸ’¬. But at the same time, let's not forget that Mother Nature is still the ultimate force to be reckoned with πŸŒͺ️. Can't wait for the storm to pass and for life to get back to normal πŸ™.

😞 just thinking about all those people in the dark without heat or hot water is heartbreaking. I know we can't control weather events but it's crazy how climate change is affecting our planet. πŸŒŽπŸ’¨ I'm also so worried about those power lines and trees getting hit by that ice, it could lead to a lot of damage. Hope everyone stays safe out there! β„οΈπŸ˜“

Ugh πŸ€• I'm so relieved the national attention is on people affected by the storm instead of climate change debate 😩. It's wild how some folks try to politicize every weather event. Anyway, have you seen the footage of the roads? So treacherous! ❄️ The fact that 840,000+ ppl lost power in one day is insane ⚑️. And I'm curious, do we really need all those flights canceled just because of a storm? πŸ€” It's like, life is already crazy enough without having to fly somewhere new every few days πŸ˜….

Wow 🀯

I'm so sorry for all those people who lost their lives in that terrible winter storm! 840,000 people without electricity? That's just crazy πŸ’₯ The Northeast got hit with heavy snowfall too... I hope everyone stays safe & warm until the power comes back on πŸ’‘

🌨️ Oh man...this winter storm is super bad! I'm so sad to hear that people have lost their lives. It's crazy how fast it can turn into a disaster when weather conditions get like this. The fact that millions are without power is just ridiculous, you know? 🀯 And I feel bad for all the people who have to deal with treacherous roads and freezing temps. Climate change is definitely something we need to talk about...I'm not sure if it's related or not, but it's clear that this storm was extreme. The whole "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING??" thing from President Trump just makes me roll my eyes, you know? πŸ™„ Anyway, I hope everyone stays safe and warm out there! 😊

This storm is totally crazy 🀯! I'm so sorry for all those people who lost their lives & homes to the cold temperatures ❄️. Like, what even is a polar vortex?! It's like nature's own personal disaster movie 😱. And can we talk about how our roads/infrastructure aren't prepared for this kind of thing? Like, come on America, invest in some snowplows & salt already! πŸš§πŸ’¦

I'm also super confused by the whole climate change debate going on here. Like, I get it that scientists are still figuring some things out, but shouldn't we just take precautions to prevent extreme weather events from happening? It's not like we're gonna "freeze" (sorry, had to) about it, right? πŸ˜‚

And what's up with President Trump questioning global warming on social media? Like, is this really the best way to address a crisis like this? Can't he just offer some support & words of encouragement instead of spreading misinformation? πŸ€”

🌨️ Ugh, I'm so worried about these people who lost their lives in the storm! ❄️ It's like, can't we just have a relatively mild winter for once? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ The fact that over 840k people were left without electricity is just insane 🚨. And those treacherous cold temperatures are straight-up terrifying 😱. I mean, who expects to see -50F (-45C) in the US?! ❄️ It's like nature decided to throw a tantrum on us 🀯.

And can we talk about how the whole global warming debate is getting derailed from the real issue at hand? πŸ™„ Like, come on guys, let's focus on helping those affected by this storm rather than bickering over science. 🌟 This winter storm has already caused so much damage and disruption – all we can do now is support each other and send warmth and comfort to those in need ❀️.

This winter storm is straight up crazy 🀯! Like 12 people lost their lives? That's just wild. And all those power outages? No electricity for millions of ppl. It's cold, it's snowy, sleet, freezing rain... what's next? πŸ˜‚

I'm thinking climate change might be the culprit here, but honestly I don't know, scientists are always like "it's complicated" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Just keep in mind that we're livin' in a crazy world now and stuff like this happens more often.

It's crazy how many flights got canceled too... like 20k+ scrapped flights? 🚫 That's some serious disruption right there. And I get it, President Trump is worried about global warming, but like, come on, we need to work together not fight each other 🀝.

The National Weather Service is bein' real though with all these warnings... heavy ice, tree damage, hazardous travel conditions... it's no joke. We gotta take this stuff seriously and stay safe during storms like this ❄️

OMG 🀯 I was just thinking about what to make for dinner tonight and I'm getting really hungry 🍴 like, seriously thinking about grilled cheese sandwiches or maybe some stir-fry... anyway, did you know that my favorite video game series, The Elder Scrolls, is coming out with a new season? Like, I've been playing it since Skyrim was still on the scene and now they're doing another one! 😲 It's gonna be epic, for sure. I wonder if the weather in the US would be better or worse if we all just took a big ol' break to play video games... haha, sounds crazy, but you never know, right? πŸ€ͺ

man thats crazy 🀯 so many ppl affected by dis storm its like natures way of reminding us how powerful it can be ❄️ & i feel 4 the people who lost their lives its trully sad πŸ˜”

i think its good that climate scientists are sounding the alarm about climate change, but at the same time we cant deny the role of natural variability in extreme weather events 🌑️

im worried bout the infrastructure & how its gonna recover from dis disaster πŸ’Έ hope everyone stays safe & warm πŸ‘

😩 this is just heartbreaking... a dozen lives lost already? it's like the storm was a ticking time bomb waiting to unleash its fury on the country... so many people left without power, it's like we're living in a scene from a disaster movie... i'm really worried about those states of emergency being declared, it's not just about the cold temps, but also about the treacherous conditions that are making travel super hazardous... and what's with President Trump trying to deflect from climate change? 🌑️ doesn't he get it? this is exactly what we're talking about - extreme weather events caused by our changing climate 🌎

Ugh I'm so worried about all those people without power 😩🌟 especially those in the South who have been hit hard by outages. It's crazy to think that some people are having to bundle up just to go outside their own homes 🀯. And with all these cancelled flights, it must be a nightmare for families trying to get together for holidays etc 🚫.

I know some people are saying climate change isn't real or whatever, but come on guys πŸ™„... this is extreme weather we're talking about here! If there's one thing I've learned from living through all these hurricanes and heatwaves it's that humans do have an impact on the planet and our actions have consequences 🌎.

I hope everyone stays safe and warm out there πŸ’•.

🌨️ I'm literally shocked by how many people lost their lives in this storm... like, thousands? It's crazy. And 840k+ without power? That's wild. They should've invested more in renewable energy like they did back in the day πŸ“ˆ. I mean, I know climate change is real and all, but it's hard to believe some people still don't think it's a big deal πŸ˜’. It's just common sense, you know? And can we please stop cancelling flights left and right? I need to get to NYC for the Grammys lol 🎀. Seriously though, 19k+ flights cancelled is nuts...
