A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of two who was simply observing protests in a Minneapolis neighborhood. The officer involved has now been identified as Jonathan Ross, a deportation officer based out of ICE's St. Paul field office.
According to court documents, Ross has been with the agency since at least 2016 and was even injured while apprehending an undocumented man just over a year ago. However, it seems his injuries didn't stop him from becoming embroiled in another potentially deadly confrontation on Wednesday morning.
When protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis' Central neighborhood, agents from ICE and Border Patrol arrived, sparking tense confrontations with local residents who were simply trying to exercise their right to peaceful assembly. Amidst this chaos, Good was fatally shot by Ross after she allegedly asked him to leave his vehicle.
A video obtained by The Intercept shows a different story unfolding than what the Department of Homeland Security initially reported. In the footage, an officer can be heard telling Good, "Get out of the fucking car," before Ross shoots into her vehicle three times and then walks away seemingly unscathed.
The incident has sparked outrage among local leaders, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey calling for a clear and transparent investigation into Good's killing. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has also demanded a "comprehensive investigation" into the shooting, labeling it as "state violence."
