Immigrant advocates push N.J. Gov. Murphy to sign protections into law before his term ends

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is facing pressure from over 100 advocacy groups to sign a package of bills aimed at strengthening protections for immigrants before his term ends. The governor's desk has been presented with the three proposed bills, which would restrict government agencies and healthcare facilities from asking individuals about their immigration status.

The Privacy Protection Act would limit when these questions can be asked, while the Safe Communities Act would direct the state attorney general to develop policies ensuring personal freedom in certain locations, including schools and courthouses. The third bill codifies an existing directive that prohibits law enforcement from detaining or questioning people based solely on suspected immigration status.

However, Governor Murphy has already signaled his intention to veto parts of the Privacy Protection Act, stating he would sign it if the language was revised to explicitly grant professional and occupational boards permission to collect information on individuals' immigration status. He also wants the state to assume liability for violating the act instead of individual employees.

The advocacy groups, including local chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union, Council on American-Islamic Relations, and NAACP, have urged Murphy to approve the package in a letter published earlier this week. The letter describes the "terror" faced by immigrant families under the Trump administration's policies and cites statistics showing over 6,000 New Jersey residents were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement between January and October last year.

The groups argue that while Murphy cannot stop ICE enforcement in New Jersey, he can take steps to protect residents from the risks associated with immigration status. With Murphy's term set to end on January 20th, advocates are pushing for swift action before a new governor takes office.

Ugh, this is gonna be a mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... Governor Murphy's trying to do good but he's just gonna find a way to screw it up too. I mean, what's with the veto? He's gonna sign it if they change one tiny thing, that's just gonna set a bad precedent. And now these advocacy groups are all over him like white on rice 🀯... like he didn't know this was coming down the pipe. 6,000 people detained in NJ last year is just crazy 🚨... and for what? So we can pretend like it never happened? I'm not buying it. Murphy's just gonna wait till his term is up and then ghost us all πŸ‘‹... that's just how politics works, right?

I'm totally stoked that these advocacy groups are keeping it real about the struggles immigrant families face πŸ™Œ. I mean, 6,000 people detained by ICE in NJ last year? That's just heartbreaking πŸ’”. Governor Murphy needs to step up and sign this package ASAP ⏱️, even if he has to revise some of the language πŸ€”. The fact that advocacy groups are willing to speak out against these policies is giving me hope 🌟. We need more leaders like them who care about protecting people's rights 🀝. Let's keep the pressure on and make sure our voices are heard loud and clear πŸ’ͺ!

πŸ˜• I feel like we're still living through the aftermath of those dark Trump policies and now it's like Murphy is kinda backtracking πŸ€”. Like, he wants that extra protection for immigrants but at the same time he's being super vague about when & how they'll get it πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The thing is, I get why he doesn't wanna sign anything without those professional boards getting permission to know people's immigration status πŸ“, but you'd think there's a way to make that happen without leaving so much room for interpretation πŸ€”.

I'm also really worried about the new governor taking over in January, 'cause what if they just cancel all these protections? 🚫 The thought of those families having to live with this uncertainty again is terrifying 😨. I mean, we're already seeing so many ppl struggling to make ends meet & now we gotta worry about their safety too? πŸ’” It's like, can't we just take a step back & figure out how to make this country safe for everyone?! 🀝

omg u gotta feel for these ppl in NJ 🀯 they're literally being terrorized by ICE and it's so unfair πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Governor Murphy is trying to do the right thing but he's getting all up in arms with these advocacy groups over the language on one of the bills πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ i mean idc what u think, can't we just get a lil clarity here πŸ€” like wut does it even mean for "professional and occupational boards" to be able to collect info on immigration status? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ also these stats are straight fire πŸ”₯ 6k ppl detained in one year is insane πŸ’€

I'm really surprised by Phil Murphy's stance on this whole thing πŸ€”. I mean, I get why he wants to water down the Privacy Protection Act, but it just seems like we're having a bunch of dΓ©jΓ  vu all over again 😩. Remember how our state was always pushing back against Trump's immigration policies? Now we're backtracking? It feels like progress is being taken two steps forward and one step back 🚫.

And can you believe the advocacy groups are threatening to hold him accountable if he vetoes it? Like, come on, guys... we need someone who's gonna stand up for us, not cower down πŸ™„. And what really gets my goat is that they're talking about "terror" faced by immigrant families... meanwhile, how about the terror of living in a state where you can be detained at any moment? It's time to take control and make some real changes πŸ”’.

I'm keeping an eye on this one, folks. This could go either way, but I'm rooting for the advocacy groups to push through. We need to protect our residents' rights and ensure that no one is discriminated against based on their immigration status πŸ’―. Fingers crossed 🀞!

im not sure why ppl r so mad at murphy lol πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ he's tryin to help immigrant families but also gotta think about the logistics of it all. i mean, if he signs these bills without gettin the language right, it could lead to some major issues down the line. and whats with the advocacy groups wantin him to assume liability instead of individual employees? seems like a lot of blame to put on one person πŸ€”

anywayz, i think murphy's doin what he thinks is rite, even if its not exactly how ppl want it done. hes got his heart in the right place and thats what matters, right? πŸ™ lets just hope whoever takes over after him knows whats goin on 🀞

I'm kinda worried about Phil Murphy not signing these bills ASAP πŸ€•πŸ“ He's got over 100 groups breathing down his neck and they're all saying the same thing - protecting immigrants is a basic human right! I drew a quick diagram to show what that looks like:
```
+-----------------------+
Immigrant Rights
+-----------------------+
|
Protection from
ICE Detention
v
+-----------------------------------------------+
Privacy Protection Act
Safe Communities Act
Professional Boards Data
Assumption of Liability
+-----------------------------------------------+
```
I think it's time for the state to step up and take responsibility for ensuring everyone's safety, regardless of their immigration status. The stats on ICE detentions in NJ are crazy - 6k people detained last year? That's not okay 🚫. I'm all for Murphy trying to revise the language, but if he doesn't sign these bills by January 20th, it'll be like, what's the point?

omg, i'm lowkey hyped about this one 🀩!! Governor Murphy is gettin' pressured by all these advocacy groups to sign these bills that would literally protect immigrant families from being harassed about their immigration status! it's about time someone took action πŸ•°οΈ. the fact that 6k+ people were detained in nj last year is crazy and i'm glad murphy wants to take a stand against that terror 😱.

i don't agree with him vetoing parts of the privacy protection act tho, it should be all or none πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. but overall, this is a major step forward for immigrant rights and i'm rooting for murphy to get it done πŸ’ͺ. fingers crossed he signs these bills before his term ends! πŸ™

πŸ€” I mean, Governor Murphy is kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place, you know? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ He's got all these advocacy groups breathing down his neck to sign the bills, but at the same time he doesn't wanna be seen as giving in to their demands. 🀯 And then there's this thing about him wanting to veto parts of the Privacy Protection Act... I don't get why he'd want to do that, considering all those people are counting on him for protection? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Like, doesn't he care that 6,000+ NJ residents got detained by ICE last year? 😱 It's like, what's the point of even having a governor if you're not gonna stand up for your people? πŸ™„

I think its really cool that all these advocacy groups are coming together to push for change in NJ 🀝. I mean, its no secret that the current climate around immigration is super tough for many families, and its great that they're speaking out for those who need protection.

The thing is, I can see both sides here - Governor Murphys concerns about professional boards wanting access to this info, but at the same time, you've got these groups fighting for people's rights to be treated with dignity. Can we find a way to balance those two perspectives? πŸ€”

And honestly, its hard not to think about all the NJ residents who went through trauma last year due to ICE detentions - 6k is a crazy number! You gotta feel for them and want to see change happen ASAP πŸ’ͺ

So Governor Murphy is just gonna stick his finger up at all those advocacy groups and veto some parts of this bill... πŸ™„ like he really thinks they'll let it slide when he's not around anymore? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The whole thing feels like a PR stunt, you know? He's trying to look good in front of the masses, but at the end of the day, who do these bills even protect? Immigrant families with anxiety about being detained... sounds like some real "protective" measures πŸ˜’

man this is crazy... over 100 advocacy groups putting pressure on phil murphy to sign these bills and yet he's already trying to water them down πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ like what's the point of even having a law if it's just gonna be revised every 5 min? the stats are wild btw, 6k nj residents detained by ice last year... that's some real-life stuff right there πŸ’”

man this is getting intense 🀯 Governor Phil Murphy is caught in the middle of a huge storm here with over 100 advocacy groups piling pressure on him to sign these bills πŸ“. it's like he's trying to navigate through a complex maze without any clear exit strategy πŸ—ΊοΈ.

I think what's driving this push is the trauma and fear that immigrant families have faced under Trump's policies πŸ‘€. the numbers are just staggering - 6,000 people detained in NJ alone 😱. it's hard to blame the advocates for wanting some form of protection from these kind of systemic risks 🀝.

Murphy's veto on parts of the Privacy Protection Act is pretty interesting though πŸ€”. it's like he's trying to find a middle ground that works for everyone 🀝. but at the same time, I get why the advocates are pushing hard - they feel like their voices aren't being heard enough πŸ—£οΈ.

it's gonna be really interesting to see how this all plays out before January 20th ⏰. will Murphy find a way to balance competing interests and pass some meaningful legislation? or will it fall through the cracks πŸ”‡?

idk why gov murphy is being so stubborn about this πŸ€” he knows its the right thing to do but hes gonna veto parts of the act and still make it kinda hard for ppl to get their info protected πŸ™„ what if hes trying to save face or sumthin? i mean we all know how much trump hated immigrants so theres def some politics involved here πŸ€‘

anywayz, its not just about gov murphy tho - its about the impact these policies have on ppl lives and futures πŸ€• the fact that over 6k nj residents were detained by ice last year is straight up crazy 😱 we cant keep letting this stuff happen without speakin out. advocacy groups r doin a solid job bringin attention to this issue but i think gov murphy needs to step up his game πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” so what's going on here? like, Governor Murphy is being super pressured by all these advocacy groups to sign these bills or whatever, but he's already kinda saying no to some of it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ like, the Privacy Protection Act is a big deal, right? I mean, it's trying to limit when gov agencies and healthcare places can ask people about their immigration status. And then there's this Safe Communities Act that's all about making sure people aren't being targeted just because they're immigrants 🚫.

But what's with Governor Murphy wanting the state to be held liable for violating these new laws? Like, isn't that kinda backwards? Wouldn't it be better if individual employees were responsible instead of the whole state? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ also, I'm a bit confused about why some of these groups are pushing for this stuff so hard. Like, they're saying that immigrant families are living in "terror" under the Trump administration's policies... but isn't it kinda their fault to not know what's going on? πŸ€” or am I just misunderstanding something here? πŸ™ƒ

I don't think its fair that Phil Murphy is having to deal with so much pressure from these advocacy groups πŸ€”. Like I get it, immigrants in NJ are facing some serious stress and stuff, but shouldn't he be able to make decisions for himself about what bills to sign without all these groups breathing down his neck?

I mean, the third bill sounds pretty solid, restricting law enforcement from detaining people based on suspected immigration status. That's gotta be a good thing, right? πŸ™Œ But then you've got him vetoing parts of the Privacy Protection Act because he wants more control over how it gets implemented... like what's next? Him just making up his own rules without anyone else's input?

I also feel bad for NJ residents who are already stressed out about their immigration status, but at the same time I get why advocates don't want him to sign these bills with conditions that might open them up to lawsuits. It's all just so... complicated 🀯.

I'm getting major anxiety thinking about all these immigrants being detained and questioned... πŸ€• it's like they're living in fear 24/7. I mean, what if you just happen to have the wrong paperwork? You could be hauled off to detention without even knowing why. It's crazy.

And Governor Murphy is like, 'I'll sign this bill if you change a few words,' which feels kinda weak to me. Like, we're talking about people's lives here... shouldn't he just stand up for what's right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I get that politics can be tricky, but come on.

These advocacy groups are pushing hard for a reason – they know how devastating these policies have been in the past. The numbers are chilling: 6,000 people detained just last year? That's not just some random number; it's real lives affected by cruel laws. We need to stand up for these families and make sure our leaders are doing everything they can to protect them. πŸ’ͺ

omg u guys i'm literally dying over here!!! phil murphy gotta sign these bills ASAP!!! like wooo it's about time we protect our immigrant families from those scary ice agents πŸ€―πŸ’– they're already living in fear under trump's policies and now it's up to us to make a change πŸ’ͺ

i know phil's hesitant but come on guys he's got to do the right thing here!!! πŸ˜” if he vetoes parts of the privacy protection act, that's just not cool πŸ€• i get it about the language thing but can't we just make an exception for healthcare facilities and schools? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

anyway, those advocacy groups are on point πŸ’― they're literally fighting for our rights and we gotta support them πŸ’ͺ🏼 so let's all send phil murphy some love and encouragement πŸ’ŒπŸ’• he can do this!!! πŸ‘

Ugh, this is just another example of how frustrating it is to try and have a real conversation on here 🀯. Can't we just focus on the issue at hand without all the drama? So Governor Murphy is getting heat from advocacy groups to sign these bills, which is actually kind of awesome, right? I mean, who doesn't want to protect immigrant families from being terrorized by ICE? 🀝 But seriously, it's a bit concerning that he's already signaling he wants to veto parts of the Privacy Protection Act because it doesn't explicitly give professional boards permission to collect immigration info. Like, what even is that? And why are we having to debate this on the forums instead of just getting straight answers from our leaders? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not like this is rocket science... πŸš€
