Italy 18-15 Scotland: Gregor Townsend's visitors begin Six Nations with shock defeat in heavy Rome rain

Scotland's Six Nations campaign has got off to a disastrous start as they suffered a 18-15 defeat to Italy in heavy rain in Rome.

Italy's fly-half Paolo Garbisi added eight points to his side, including two penalties and a conversion from a grubber-kick assist by Juan Ignacio Brex. Italy's wing Louis Lynagh and centre Tommaso Menoncello scored tries for the hosts, while Scotland responded with two tries of their own through Jack Dempsey and George Horne.

Despite being trailing by two scores at one stage, Scotland managed to narrow the gap to three points but ultimately failed to kick on and avoid defeat. The loss has been described as 'frustrating' by Scotland captain Sione Tuipolotu, who stated that the team's errors were their downfall.

Italy, on the other hand, are feeling confident after securing a well-deserved win against a top-tier opponent. Italy captain Michele Lamaro described the victory as an 'honour', stating that his team had worked tirelessly to achieve this result and that it would give them a lot of confidence moving forward.

Scotland will look to bounce back from this loss when they host England at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on February 14, while Italy travel to Dublin for their next match against Ireland.

omg did u guys see scotland get smashed by italy?? i know they're gonna bounce back but man that was a tough start to the six nations 18-15 is like a big deficit 🤯 and i feel bad for jack dempsey who scored those tries for them 🏉 he's been doing well in the league and this loss must be frustrating for him 🙄 anyway lets hope scotland can regroup and beat england next match 🤞

omg u guys i just watched like the whole game 🤯 and scotland is literally soooo underrated 🤦‍♂️ they had some amazing chances but just couldn't score 🏆 anyway it's not all bad news, scotty's got a rematch vs england coming up and that should be lit 🔥 btw italian rugby seems to be on the rise 👍 i mean brex is like whoa what a grubber-kick 😲 i need to watch more of his games

Ugh I feel so bad for those Scottish players 🤕 They've got a tough road ahead of them after that one 🤯 I mean, you can't blame the lads too much though - it's not easy getting beaten by Italy in all this wet weather 😅 And that 6 Nations tournament is just getting more competitive, you know? 🤔 Still, gotta be hopeful for Scotland come the next match against England... they've got some talented young players who might just turn their game around ⏪ Maybe it's time to give them a bit more playing time and let them get some experience 💡

omg what's going on with scotland rugby?? 🤔 i mean they're supposed to be the scottish warriors but now they're getting smashed by italy... i get that heavy rain is no joke but still 18-15 isn't a bad score for them, right? 🤷‍♂️ and italian wing louis lynagh is like a superstar on the field 🙌! but scotland's captain sione tuipolotu says their errors cost them the game... i feel bad for him 🤕 i hope they can bounce back from this loss and get those wins going! especially since they're playing england next 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Scotland's Six Nations campaign is off to a super bad start 😱! I mean, you can't win if you're down by two scores at one point and still can't get back on track 🤦‍♂️. Their errors cost them the game, and you can't just chalk it up to bad luck 🤔. They need to work on their discipline and execution ASAP ⏰. Meanwhile, Italy's win is a huge confidence booster for them 💪! It's not every day you beat Scotland, so this one's got to feel amazing for the Italian squad 😊. Can't wait to see how they'll bounce back from this win 💥!
