Joachim Trier's 'Sentimental Value' Wins Big at European Film Awards
Norwegian director Joachim Trier has made a triumphant return to the European Film Awards with his latest film, "Sentimental Value", taking home the top prize for best film. The critically acclaimed drama also swept up awards for best director, screenwriter, actor, and original score.
Trier was visibly emotional as he accepted the award for best director, praising the power of cinema to unite people and create empathy in a world filled with darkness. "I think we're at a core moment when we all have to take into account that the other is not our enemy, and that art can help us, at best, create empathy in the darkness," he said.
The film's lead actress, Renate Reinsve, also took home the award for best European actress. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her sisters, who cared for her as a child, saying "This is a movie about a father and daughter relationship, and two sisters, and I want to say to my two sisters, Helen and Cecilia, that I am the older sister but you were the ones taking care of me when we were growing up, and thank you so much, I wouldn’t have been anywhere without you."
The European Film Awards ceremony also saw a number of other notable winners. The best documentary prize went to Igor Bezinović's "Fiume O Morte!", while Natalie Portman was among the producers of the animated feature film award winner, "Arco". Laura Carreira won the Discovery Award for her first full-length feature film, "On Falling".
The ceremony also featured a number of special guests, including Norwegian acting legend Liv Ullmann, who received the European Lifetime Achievement Award. In her speech, she made a pointed comment about the Nobel Prize, saying "I'm Norwegian... We gave a Nobel Prize to somebody who deserved it, and suddenly that Nobel Prize is going to someone else ... It is so strange."
Other notable winners included Greta Scarano's "Siblings", which won the European Young Audience Award, and Maren Ade's credits in Berlin's Komplizen Film, whose credits include "Sentimental Value".
