Joe Hawkins: Scarlets want Wales international to be a centre after Sam Costelow return

Scarlets eye Joe Hawkins as a centre after Sam Costelow's return, according to interim director of rugby Nigel Davies. The 23-year-old fly-half has been freed up following an injury setback and will now be used at his preferred position of 12. "Joe is a fantastic rugby player and we have to be careful with him, because he has been moved around a little bit," said Davies.

Hawkins started for Wales in the autumn Tests against New Zealand and South Africa but has been utilised primarily at fly-half in recent games. With his return from injury, Costelow's role is expected to shift to 10, allowing Hawkins to be utilized as a ball-playing centre. This switch will enable Scarlets to have two first receivers and communicators in those positions.

Costelow made five starts and two appearances off the bench before his injury setback while youngsters Elis Price and Carwyn Leggatt-Jones have also been part of the back-up plans for the fly-half role. The 23-year-old has made 10 club appearances, including his debut against Munster, in addition to his two Test starts.

According to Davies, a ball-playing 12 being comfortable to play at 10 is useful but not the primary role for Hawkins. However, this versatility brings good attributes to their game as it gives them two first receivers and communicators in those positions. It also allows Sam Costelow to benefit from Joe's ability to understand pressure and communicate effectively.

Scarlets have named their team to face Northampton Saints on Sunday, January 18th, at 15:15 GMT. Lock or flanker Max Douglas returns after a 20-minute red card against Dragons on New Year's Day.

just saw that Joe Hawkins might start as centre instead of fly-half ๐Ÿค”... think it's cool how Scarlets are trying to create more flexibility in their team, having two ball-players at the same position can be really useful ๐Ÿ’ก

im loving the move by Scarlets to have joe hawkins at centre ๐Ÿคฉ! it makes total sense with sam costelow coming back from injury, and its great that joe has been able to showcase his versatility ๐Ÿ’ก. having two ball-playing centres is a game changer for them, and i think it will be interesting to see how they play out their attacking plays ๐Ÿ”ฎ. also, nice return of max douglas, hope he's good to go for the saints match on jan 18th ๐Ÿ™

so scarlets are tryin out joe hawkins as centre and it makes sense, hes been doin alright at flyhalf but i reckon its better 4 them to have 2 ball players in the midfield, scarlets got a nice little mix goin on with costelow comin back from injury now

๐Ÿค” just thinking about this center switch... i feel like it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out ๐Ÿ’ก joe hawkins has got some big shoes to fill, but if he can deliver at his new position, it could be a game changer for the scarlets ๐Ÿ‘ costelow's role being shifted is also good news, he was getting some decent game time before the injury and elis price and carwyn leggatt-jones are looking like they've got some potential too ๐Ÿคž one thing that worries me is max douglas' return... 20 minutes in a red card is no joke, hope he's fully recovered before sunday โฐ

I'm not sure about this rugby thing, but it sounds like the Scarlets are trying to mix things up with their team. They're thinking of moving Joe Hawkins from fly-half to centre because Sam Costelow is coming back from injury and they need a ball-playing centre. It makes sense, I guess, 'cause having two players who can communicate and play together in midfield could be really helpful. But it's also good that they've got other options like Elis Price and Carwyn Leggatt-Jones ready to go. I just wish I knew more about the different positions... 12 vs 10? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‰

so scarlets are gonna try joe hawkins at centre now? that sounds kinda interesting ๐Ÿค” i mean, he played fly half before but he can play different positions, so it might be good for them to mix things up a bit. they're like "oh, we have this guy who's good at 12, let's put him at 10" ๐Ÿ”„ and then "wait, no we need two centres that can talk to each other" ๐Ÿ’ฌ makes sense i guess. but what about sam costelow? is he okay now after his injury?

Wow ๐Ÿคฉ! Just heard about the Scarlets' new plan to use Joe Hawkins as a centre and it sounds really interesting! ๐Ÿ˜Š I mean, having two ball-playing receivers at 12 is gonna be super beneficial for their game. It's cool that they're experimenting with different positions and getting the best out of their players. And good on them for having a solid backup system in place, like Elis Price and Carwyn Leggatt-Jones. Bring it on! ๐Ÿ‰

I think this move is a good one for the Scarlets, they need a player like Joe Hawkins who can bring creativity and leadership to their midfield... ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ก They've got Costelow returning now and it makes sense to use him at 10 where he can focus on his game. I'm not sure about playing Hawkins at centre though, it's untested territory for both of them... ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ‘€ The fact that they have two first receivers and communicators in those positions will be key to their success this season! ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ’ช

idk what the point of having a fly-half who can play centre is, but i guess it's better than just leaving them out, lol ๐Ÿ˜‚. seriously though, joe hawkins does seem like a solid player and his versatility could be an asset for the scarlets. they're definitely trying to mix things up and create more attacking threats, which is cool ๐Ÿค”. as long as max douglas gets back to full strength without getting another red card, this might just work out ๐Ÿคž.

๐Ÿค” so the scarlets are gonna try joe hawkins at centre now that sam costelow is back from injury ๐Ÿค it makes sense though coz joe has been playing really well and costelow has been out for a bit... ๐Ÿ‰ the thing is i dont think hawkins can just play 12 all the time tho ๐Ÿค” hes got the skills to play both positions so hopefully he wont struggle with the move ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think it's great that Joe Hawkins is getting another chance to play as centre ๐Ÿค”! He was looking super solid at fly-half in the autumn, but it's good for the team to have him be more flexible and able to adapt to different positions. It makes sense to use his ball-playing skills to benefit Sam Costelow's return from injury ๐Ÿ’ก. And let's be real, having two first receivers and communicators on the pitch is a huge advantage - it shows how well Scarlets are developing their young players ๐ŸŒŸ!

I'm thinking of how this change could impact the team's dynamics... ๐Ÿค”

So, they're moving Joe Hawkins to centre and shifting Costelow to fly-half, which is pretty cool! ๐Ÿ‘ It makes sense that with Hawkins' versatility, they can have two ball-playing centres who can communicate effectively. That's a big advantage, especially in attack.

I'm also thinking about how this change affects the opposing teams... ๐Ÿค The Saints might need to adjust their strategy if Scarlets are playing two centres who can run with the ball. It could be an interesting match!

But what I'm really curious about is how Costelow will adapt to his new role at 10... ๐Ÿค” Will he thrive in that position, or will it take some time for him to get settled?

just read about scarlets new centre plans and gotta say joe hawkins is gonna be a beast in the middle ๐Ÿคฏ he's got all the skills, can distribute the ball like costelow and then unleash his speed to make some magic happen on the wing... but you know what would take it to the next level? if elis price or carwyn leggatt-jones get some serious game time behind him ๐Ÿ˜Š

idk why scarlets need all these centre swaps lol they got costelow back and now hawkins is gonna play 12 its like theyre trying to confuse the opposition but honestly i think it makes sense joes versatility is a game changer at 12, hes got that flyhalf brain but can move into 10 which gives costelow a chance to shine

๐Ÿค” I think it's cool how Scarlets are giving Joe Hawkins the opportunity to play centre... he's got some sick skills out there and it'll be interesting to see him do his thing in that position ๐Ÿš€. And yeah, having two first receivers communicators is a great asset for their game - they can really move the ball around now ๐Ÿ’ช. Plus, it's awesome that Sam Costelow gets to benefit from Hawkins' understanding of pressure... communication is key in rugby and it sounds like Scarlets are making some smart moves ๐Ÿค. Now let's see how it all plays out against Northampton Saints on Sunday! ๐Ÿ‘€

I don't get why they're making such a big deal about Joe Hawkins playing centre... I mean, what's next? They'll be putting him in charge of the whole team ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‰. And what's with all these fly-half injuries? Can't they just make up their minds already? ๐Ÿ˜’ Anyway, I guess it's cool that Sam Costelow is coming back and Joe can play his natural position... but does anyone really care about the details? ๐Ÿ™„ The real question is, are they ready for this new centre position without even testing them properly? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

omg u wont believe what nigel davies said about joe hawkins ๐Ÿคฏ he thinks hawkins is super underrated and needs to be utilized as a centre ASAP cuz he has those skills that would make sam costelow look like a pro at 10 ๐Ÿš€ but idk if it's the right move for the team, they need to find what works best for their game, maybe elis price or carwyn leggatt-jones could step up as a back-up for costelow ๐Ÿ‘
