Detroit Mourns the Loss of 'Papa Joe' Zainea, a Beloved Community Leader
Joseph John Zainea, a Detroit icon and pillar of the community, passed away on February 4th at the age of 92. Known affectionately as "Papa Joe" to customers and staff, Zainea spent decades as the steward of two beloved institutions: the Majestic Theatre Center and the historic Garden Bowl.
Zainea's impact on Detroit's culinary and entertainment scene cannot be overstated. After purchasing the Garden Bowl in 1984, he transformed it into a gathering place for generations of Detroiters. The venue became synonymous with good food, great company, and live music. As the business expanded under his leadership, Zainea ensured that it remained true to its community roots.
Under Zainea's watchful eye, the Garden Bowl welcomed law enforcement officials during the 1967 Detroit uprising, providing a safe haven for those in need. His commitment to putting people first was evident in every aspect of his business and personal life. As family members noted, he built long-lasting relationships with customers and employees alike.
Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Zainea dedicated himself to civic and nonprofit efforts. In 2008, he received a lifetime achievement award from Preservation Wayne for his community involvement. His legacy extends through the board membership of The Children's Center of Wayne County, which provides vital services to children and families in need.
Zainea is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; their four children, Leane, David, Kathryn, and Joe; and two grandchildren. As Detroit mourns the loss of this remarkable individual, it remembers him as a steadfast champion of community, tradition, and the human spirit. Funeral services will be held on February 11th at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Detroit, with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
